Trappist Monks in Chico??

This video is from my phone. Gohere for lots more info.

After visiting the rebuilt Chapter House, walk across the parking lot to a great small winery
here. This is the New Clairvaux winery. Small production winery that sells out every year to the surrounding resturants and a few of the Raley's in the Chico area or via their website. Each year, the winemaker makes three blends and the monks select what they want their table wine to be for the coming year. This is simply titled Red Table Wine and is really good; $15. Each year it changes based on which blend wins the tasting round.
They have a petit sarah that goes for $35 and is outstanding - only available at the winery.
We went on a Sunday, late morning, monks singing in the chapel, sipping a dry rose of syrah under valley oaks......damn, life can be good.

From the looks of that building, the wine business must be doing well.

Looks like the important columns and trim around the arches are made using the original stones from Spain but much of the filler is modern hollow core concrete blocks.:?:

The tour we took said that the 'new stones' in the arches and colomn are from Texas limestone. They have built a superstructure over the whole thing and lots of concrete blocks there - I think it will be plastered eventually.

The stones were imported to SF by Hearst for a fishing/hunting retreat in California but never was built. The city of SF ended up with them and they gave them to the Trappist Monks on the condition that the building would be open to the public. I beleive most of the money for the building is from donations.
The property is on the original Leland Stanford ranch that at 22,000 acres total and 1500 acres contiguous vines made it the largest winey on earth then and forever more. They tore ALL the vines out due to Prohibition.....for goodness sakes.
