Woosh posted this on Talk Baja. I know nothing else
ENSENADA BC , September 1, 2013 - The Secretary of Communications and Transportation in Baja California reported that due to the intense rains south
of Ensenada, transit is suspended on the Transpeninsular Highway for those heading southbound ftpm the state to Baja California Sur.
The problems with the highway network are located in the stretch of washes at kilometers 155.7, at San Agustín and at 180.3 in Cataviña, on the
stretch between Lázaro Cárdenas and Punta Prieta, where there are pools of water more than 5 feet deep and there are not alternative routes.
Traffic is suspended from 6PM Saturday. The wash is a concrete slab and it is hoped the damage is only silt deposits. The supervisor of the area is
hoping that the conditions improve and they can reestablish traffic flows, reported the Secretary via a communique.

Not unheard of for these area to flood. As the article says, they are cement culverts that should be cleaned up quickly after the water recedes,
which it probably already has. Closure was yesterday at 6:00.woody with a view - 9-1-2013 at 02:57 PM
it looks like it is still pouring around Catavina.
edit: drag the map.

I do not recall this sort of total closure in all the years I've driven Mex1. There were a few times when we just knew we had to pull over and wait.
It even happened to us once smack in the middle of El Rosario.MMc - 9-1-2013 at 04:30 PM
We were stuck for more then a 2 weeks when the rains took out the bridges in S/Q. I think it was 79 or 80, road was wiped out above El Rosario. There
were some travelers trapped between S/Q and El Rosario. We turned around got all the gas we could hold and went surfing. Almost went south and flew
home after 2 weeks. Good times!!woody with a view - 9-1-2013 at 04:36 PM

Km.157 is Arroyo Agua Dulce
... Good recharging of the historic waterhole which is about 2 miles upstream.BajaBlanca - 9-1-2013 at 05:05 PM
So, as I understand the article, it is for those headed South.
I just posted asking if the highway is closed going North.wessongroup - 9-1-2013 at 05:12 PM
Would imagine the "water" would be as deep going north, as it is going south ... in most cases tripledigitken - 9-1-2013 at 05:18 PM
Back when I was working and vacationing in Baja the road closures were always northbound. (usually got me an extra 4 days off)

Think about it for a minute Blanca. Why would it be closed in only one direction? Now I suspect the road closure/opening will depend on weather. No
more rain.. It will open soon.Bajaboy - 9-1-2013 at 05:19 PM

Exactly how to "adapt" to difficult situations .... sit back and relax and enjoy the down time.. good one kenBajaahh - 9-1-2013 at 05:21 PM
Just talked to Baja Cactus Hotel and she said the road was open to Catavina. I figured she would know for sure since they would see the turned around
travelers.
Im hoping its open by now, we're leaving at the buttcrack o' dawn...
Any further news would be MUCH appreciated!BajaBlanca - 9-1-2013 at 05:26 PM
So are we!
So glad it is open!
I asked about going north before I saw this thread had already been started.
Weird how the article says road closed going south......does not make sense at all....David K - 9-1-2013 at 05:33 PM
Flash floods can happen anytime. No guarantees driving the Baja highway.DianaT - 9-1-2013 at 05:38 PM

Funny how that happened!
The longest we have seen it closed was a few years ago when several of the bridges washed out. It was not long before they had detours around the
bridges.
However, as long as it keeps raining around Cataviña I can't see away around the problem.rts551 - 9-1-2013 at 06:03 PM
Satelite shows heavy rain south of Ensenada
small amount of rain right now in Abreojos.

No, it is the same phenomenon as walking uphill to school both ways in a deep snowstorm.Pescador - 9-2-2013 at 07:34 AM

Went thru Catavina northbound about 9 AM Saturday - no problems, no rain, just a little water in the washes south & north of town. Guess I
lucked out and missed the storm.chuckie - 9-2-2013 at 08:20 AM
