Cats in Baja?

6flora6 - 8-19-2003 at 03:26 PM

I am looking for some advice on moving cats to Baja California Sur. My partner and I are contemplating making the move and would like to bring our kitties. I am wondering if anyone has any experience in moving cats to Baja from the States? I am aware of the legal aspects around importing them, vet papers, etc, but am looking for some information on how well they would adapt to the local climate and critters. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!

What legal aspects? Put them in the car and go. I'm not aware of any place a cat can't adapt.

There are WAY MORE dogs than cats, but they will adapt. In my opinion, if you start training them, with kitty treats, as soon as you get there, to have them be inside at night, then the coyotes, wolves, packs of dogs are less likely to get them. If they really love you, they'll bring you those little lizards and ratones they catch and drop them on your bed. ;)

And a beautiful kitty she is Jimmy!

The thing I would worry about (which was mentioned here) is the Coyotes. Depends on where you are planning on bringing your kitty, is your cat an indoor or outdoor cat? In the 'out-back' better be an indoor kitty, although Doc had "Cabbage" for something like 17yrs. and she died of natural causes, (found in the yard undisturbed,) she was a Siamese and loved visiting campfires and hanging out with the folks at night! RIP Cabbage! She was a 'lady'.......

i am sure they will be fine, and as already mentioned, they will help keep the pests down to a minimum.a couple i know take their cat on camp trips in remote baja areas all the time with no prblems!(the cat runs around outside all cay, then is put in the camper at night.)

I wonder if cat owners shave their cats when the weather down south gets too hot?:D

As a veterinarian, I have treated many cats allowed free rein outdoors. If you want your cats to have long healthy lives, PLEASE keep them inside.

Native Mexican cats can survive in beach camps. Gringo city cats don't have a chance with the bold as brass coyotes day or night out in the Campos if they are not locked in. Coyotes will dig under fences, cages etc for a kittie. Take a big dog too.

The cats I've had never seemed to travel well. They had a tendency to run off at the first opportunity (I think this is a homing instinct). If I were taking a cat down, I'd be careful not to let it get loose on the way, and would keep it in 24 hours a day until it got acclimated. Mcgyver's right about the coyotes, not to mention hungry dogs.

Last trip to Baja - camped next to a great guy from Canada and his cat named 'CAT". He would put a harness on it and tie the cat to an axe and it would drag it all over. Pulled like a draft horse. Every so often he would follow the trail and bring CAT home. This was on Jucalito beach. A fairly civilived area.
