Looking for a rebuilt motor Ford Ranger . . . .

Mula - 9-13-2013 at 01:25 PM

Our friend has a 1987 2.9L Ford Ranger - Standard - that desperately needs another motor.

Any input on finding decent rebuilt or replacement motors in Baja would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Working around ADUANA, without a doubt the best place to shop would be Tijuana for a "Long Block" short-block plus cylinder head attached. A used Mexicano engine means buying something with a 4" diameter bore with 3" collapsed pistons, that isn't completely seized. Something akin to finding "Good Used Shock Absorbers".

I know . .. it's a problem.

Hate to have to haul a rebuilt one from the states, but might be necessary.

try to find a shop that can hook you up with a Jasper reman. good engines.;)

It looks like the vehicle has to be in the USA to go to a Jasper Installer.

Interesting site and concept, for sure.

That is not possible. I just want to buy an engine.

Isn't there anyone there (Sur) that does engine rebuilds??

Mula - 9-13-2013 at 05:33 PM

Finding some place in Baja Sur that does rebuilds would be wonderful.

LA is not a choice. Thanks anyway..

Mula, I have several friends who have had motors and transmissions rebuilt by Ramon at Servicio Sanchez on the corner of Mexico and Independencia in La Paz, with good results. They have been servicing our vehicles for years and we've never had a problem with their work.

Great. Thanks. I will check them out on Monday on our way to San Jose.

That's the kind of lead I think I needed.

Try asking at Progressive auto parts in La Paz.

One store on Forjadores across from Sorianas and the other on Ocampo a block east from Telmex.

The Ocampo store has a large engine part remanufacturing division. Blocks bored and honed, heads milled, crankshaft turning, etc. I've had two sets of heads planed there. (One on a two hour turnaround! For 50 pesos over the posted rate of 400 pesos....)

Anyway, not sure where all these remanufactured parts are being re-assembled into reman engines, but, based on the volume of work being done, there are a lot of engines being rebuilt in La Paz.

The store or the manager in the reman shop should be able to refer you to a rebuilder.

I'd ask for you as I'm in there a bunch, but, currently in the US.

Good Luck

look further......they exist

I have had an engine rebuilt in Loreto.
I provided the parts.....the mechanic provided the wrenches.
What he could not do machine wise, was sent off to Constitution for machine work.

Fili of Filis Shop in Loreto rebuilds engines. It is his speciality . He is located 1km south of the airport turn off on the west side of the highway. Look for a long wall, no sign. He is very fair on prices, always busy, so allow time, speaks english and is a great guy.

He has done custom work for me and it has been perfect.

For what it's worth I have NEVER had as good of luck with a re-man engine as I have had with genuine Ford re-manufactured engines. They cost more, but so does 300* quarts of oil that a real funky used or off-brand engine will eat or drip for lunch.

*Yeah it's a sour exaggeration. An eighty peso a liter exaggeration.

Made where?

Oddly enough or not, that genuine Ford rebuild was more than likely assembled in Mexico.

The "local" Baja rebuild I had done, has yet to leak a drop with USA sourced gaskets, which were probably made in Chonburi, Thailand.

YMMV as always
