Bought a jug of milk this morning..yucky bad...went back to exchange it... ALL the milk was 5 days past the sell by..went to 4 other groceries.ALL the same 5 days past sell by and all shelves were FULL..bad milk dumping? wassup?

shari - 9-18-2013 at 02:52 PM

ALWAYS check the expiry dates chuckie dear....on dairy products especially...before I buy milk, I ask what day the milk truck comes in so I can wait a day if necessary to get fresh milk.

DaliDali - 9-18-2013 at 03:00 PM

Caracol or Del Valle?

chuckie - 9-18-2013 at 03:07 PM

J.P. - 9-18-2013 at 03:10 PM

I went in the store on the Square and while shopping I witnessed a woman open a gal. of milk, take a sip out of it and put it back on the shelf in the cooler. :barf::barf:

Milk

bajaguy - 9-18-2013 at 05:12 PM

We always buy our milk in the cartons on the shelf, not in the refrigerated section. Has a shelf life of 2 - 3 months. Buy several, pop one in the fridge every 5 or 6 days. No spoiled milk.

weebray - 9-18-2013 at 05:28 PM

Been using Nido or Liconsa (available at Isste) for over 10 years. Whole milk, lasts for months, costs less, tastes great, packs small. No problem.

Doesn't taste the same.

EnsenadaDr - 9-18-2013 at 05:36 PM

I use Lala boxed milk and recommended the Jersey half and half it to my friend who ran a restaurant in Maneadero. The refrigerated trucks are horrible in Mexico. I love the milk in the Box, it is so fresh, and never goes bad.

I got so fed up with sour milk in the frig section in Mexico, I will never buy it again. And the flavor is superb.

EnsenadaDr - 9-18-2013 at 05:38 PM

I totally agree. The flavor is wonderful as well.

i dunno about Nutri Leche in the white/green box (Qt. size) but that's a 'use straight from the box' full strength and is dated, and doesn't need refrigeration 'till opening. I prefer the li'l pint solid green boxes of it for my coffee instead of 1/2 and 1/2, and carry some spare pint plastic bottles with me to put it in when it goes in the fridge. Doesn't quite stand up to par when mixed w/50% water to make regular milk, but for the Morning Mud Ritual is Ichi Ban.

Oh, and stale milk makes for great baking and rice pudding!

I once met a woman in Culiacan with a"Use By" mark tattoo on her culo. We were only betrothed for seven hours, then she had to go back to the Hotelito.

On the nailhead

Indeed nasty right out of the box.
Mix it with some cornflakes or drown some oatmeal in it....passable.

Del Valle is vial stuff.....tastes odd to me, whereas Caracol is what fresh milk should taste like.

Yup, Lala or Jerseymaid, regular, light, 1/2 & 1/2 and crema mediano in a smaller box......delicious.

Generally found on the shelf near the cereal. Has about a 2 - 3 month (warm) shelf life. When you open it, it goes in the fridge.

Ba-da-bing!

Thanks George. I take it no dairy products were involved.

If you give powdered whole milk about a week to get used to the "new" taste of milk, you will find it quite acceptable. We use a bit more powder than the recipe on the pkg. calls for. We use it in all our cooking and coffee and now actually prefer it to the liquid varity. We don't drink ANY milk straight - it puts fatty deposits under your eyes.

lizard lips - 9-19-2013 at 11:54 AM

Because I go to San Diego so often I buy three or four gallons then freeze it. Always there when I need it! I will NEVER buy Mexican milk again because of the fast time it goes bad.

CaboMagic - 9-19-2013 at 12:04 PM

There is Shelf Stable milk by Lala which we always consider to be very good .. doesn't require refrig until it is opened. Woody that may be what you had .. they offer it in whole half and non fat varieties and the whole is delish .. nothing like the powdered mil - yuck - or carnation canned either - also yuck - except for leche condensada dulce which is very yummy :-)

CaboMagic - 9-19-2013 at 12:06 PM

Forgot to say : J.P. what that person did was disgusting ..

bajabuddha - 9-19-2013 at 12:08 PM

Ya know, the true answer to all this is just stick to martinis and cerveza. That's my motto and i'm stickin' to it. May make the cereal taste funny, but you don't mind it as much......:light:

DavidE - 9-19-2013 at 01:08 PM

It is the temperature held during transportation and storage that causes the problem. Milk should be maintained at 38F. Oh lucky me, I go right to the almacen de caracol and get my milk.

Mexicans will pay a fortune to maintain their cerveza at 2C, pay lots of money for a six-inch tall red LED temperature display you can read all the way across the street, and let perishable products wither. I was buying curdled milk in Mulege over 30 years ago. Ice box temperatures over 50F.

I don't expect any of you have an IR thermometer? They are inexpensive and one shot, two seconds will ID temperatures to within one degree F.
I do not purchase 58F meat. I love blanquillos held at 80+F, around a 70% broken yolk factor.

Funny, I just finished watching a documentary on Hulu called, MILK?. Very enlightening. I may be done with the stuff.
