This is so not believable... today there was, in the bottom of my pool, a Sally Lightfoot Crab crawling around! I live at least 5 blocks from the sea.
I called a friend, we fished it out, put it in a bucket and took it to the marina. the guys hanging out there claim that it means there will be a
hurricane in a week! I really can't imagine how it got here...and it wasn't here yesterday.
Yesterday and the day before it was caterpillars swimming! Really, greenish black and yellow vertical stripes with a tan "nose" and a large thorn like
spike on the back end.
Any ideas how a crab got in my pool?
Anybody know what those caterpillars are?Bob and jane - 9-22-2013 at 11:55 AM
Elizabeth, We've got the same caterpillars crawling all around the yard right now. They are incredibly fast. I am assuming they will be turning into
those big, black moths we get after heavy rains.............
As for the sally lightfoot, omg! How did he dodge the cats and the dogs and the kids and the cars? And, do you have a salt water pool? Or chlorine?
He didn't seem to mind either way I guess. Hmmmm, a hurricane. I guess we'll have to keep an eye on weatherunderground.Paula - 9-22-2013 at 12:36 PM

Those icky moths need loving too! They are quiet dinner guests, and don't eat much.
Love those beady little orange eyeballs!
Elizabeth,
A long time ago, around 1982, a group of us were camped out in Todo Santos on the beach. We were far from the water, sleeping on a tarp on the sand.
When we woke up in the morning, we were surrounded by Hermit crabs. You could see the 2ft. wide trail they stampeded to our tarp, through the sand,
from the waters edge, far, far away. It looked like they circled us all night long. An elderly local man that we met told us that there must be a
storm coming for the crabs to leave the water and travel so far. I hadn't heard that saying again until I read your post. Please follow up with a
weather report, if it gets rough.

I knew I'd be in trouble for that tongue-in-cheek comment.
For the record, I'm pretty sure I've never killed a mothBugman - 9-25-2013 at 12:24 PM
Actually, the green and black caterpillars with the orange horn on the back end turn into a moth called a white lined sphinx that is not so bad
looking. Google that for a few pictures and you may recognize it. The large black moths are called black witches and their caterpillars are just a
plain black and gray with no horn. Whenever it rains down there it provides a lot more food for the bugs so they will take advantage of it. The
reason you are finding those green caterpillars in the pool is that when they are ready to pupate they abandon their plant and look for a place to
burrow underground. Sometimes they will also leave the plant and go hunting for a new one if they have eaten all the leaves. elizabeth - 9-25-2013 at 12:30 PM
Bugman, thank you so much. I did look up the moth...they are beautiful!

so beautiful moths are okay and ugly ones icky?elizabeth - 9-25-2013 at 12:52 PM
I didn't describe any moth as icky! I don't much care for the really big black ones because my cats bring them in and they're always diving in my
face!David K - 9-25-2013 at 01:33 PM
Great thread!

I heard the same story about the crabs moving inland before a storm today here in Los Barriles.

Thank you David. We've become softies. The moth hung out for quite a while. We offered it mango at first, but it much preferred the Italian salad
dressing.
