Bringing used tires down.

What or is there a way to bring used tires down? Just tires, not on rims. I want to put fatter tires on my beach launch vehicle. Much more selection up here than down there. But I heard tires a no no.

Anyone know anything about that?

Your going to have to pull those wheels off of your beach launch vehicle and bring them back home for mounting. Tires must be mounted on rims in order to cross (for whatever reason)

Depends.
Like everything down here.

Before I noticed all this "No tires" stuff, I used to bring them down all the time.
As a matter of fact, I crossed southbound at Tecate last year with seven unmounted used tires crammed into my little Subaru Impreza sedan.

Four of these were 31x10.5's, they almost reached the roof and I have no tinting on the windows.

The customs guy looked right at me and waved me through, stopping pickup trucks though.

Paying $25 for a bald 14" tire a few years ago at a llantera cured me of trying to buy a tire in Mexico. I brought several down for Mexican friends who were very happy to see safe used tires.

I'm sure there's some reason for this tire problem.
Most likely it involves a family or political monopoly

Kevin
Tecate, 0600. You know the drill. Or as Chuck said, bring the wheels up and mount them. Mounted tires they accept as if it were your spare tire.

O.K. I'll bring them back, have the tires mounted and go through Tecate at 0600.

Thanks.

I took 2 large 33" unmounted TrXus MT tires down to San Felipe for Baja Lou (RIP) for his sand rail several years ago. They had plenty of tread on them, and gave him plenty of usable traction in the dirt. I had so much packed into my Jeep that Mexican Customs did not see them. Plus, it was a pre-holiday weekend preceeding Thanksgiving.

I used to hit all the Cycle shops for used tires and I have taken a trailer full of Quad/ Motorcycle tires to SF many times and once they tried to figure out how much tax I owed. When I told them they were free they settled for $10 bucks. Since the Economy went bust people started wearing out their tires down to the cord before they buy new ones so it has dried up a bit.

We bought new tires for our jeep---wanted to bring the old tires back to SF. Went on craigs list bought set of cheap wheels $50 mounted them & sold them when we got back to SF with the tries we wanted to keep.No problem at the border.

As luck would have it ...

I recently priced a set of new LT 265/70 R17s, at WalMart in Ensenada, for 9,155 pesos. Fortunately they didn't have them in stock and I desperately needed tires for an upcoming trip so I started checking out used tires and found that 17" tires are very hard to find in Baja. However at llantaria Gonzales, just south on Maneadero I found a set that was the correct size and that had just come of a wrecked Land Rover with VERY low mileage on it. In fact the tires all had to little rubber things sticking off the sidewalls. The total price for all 4 mounted was 1,900 pesos. Gonzalez has first choice for tires at several wrecking yards in Ensenada.

Big signs posted on walls inside the border ADUANA offices list LLANTAS USADOS as being prohibited. Used P.C. computers, used clothing, chemicals are also on the list. Comistibles (motor fuel) apart from that residing in the vehicle's tank is also there on that list.

So you brought them down mounted?

Yes & sold them to friends for spares after they got here, as friends needed extra spares.
