Octave forming down below

landyacht318 - 10-8-2013 at 10:21 PM

Long ways out yet.

This model seems to have a moderate, yet fading and slowing system, off TS next Sunday/Monday.

So something to keep an eye on

DavidE - 10-9-2013 at 10:23 AM

"Fred! Fred! All the computer models disagree! What do we tell the public?"

(Fred) "Tell 'em anything. By the time the forecast turns into reality the public has forgotten their own name. Stupid! Why do you think twenty-seven different tracks are always posted? Someone has to be right!" Do you think the public is going to follow up and de-code the purple track with square dots, then compare it to all the other pretty colors, and then remember to try and find out what the track legend abbreviations mean? Who posted what? What the hell have you been smoking?

"But you NEVER EVER admit that the weather service "Does Not Know". Those three words mean a twenty percent budget cut for the next fiscal year".

I can tell you the date and time it'll reach the Peninsula; it'll be the afternoon i pull in to my li'l spot and unhook. Of course.

bajajudy - 10-10-2013 at 07:25 AM

Still brewing!
65 seems too cool for hurricanes but that is the current temp here.

DavidE - 10-10-2013 at 09:15 AM

If that thing arrives as a tropical storm then George Dubya Boosh is an intellectual, and I'm Chinese ;)

pauldavidmena - 10-11-2013 at 07:20 AM

The last time I checked on the NOAA website there was only a 50% chance of it forming a tropical cyclone. Bad news for the palaperos; good news for the palapas themselves.

bajabuddha - 10-11-2013 at 08:47 AM

Re-checked it meself, and yup, 50% chance of forming a tropical storm event. It has changed its' original track from NW to WNW, heading more out to sea, and current models show a 50%chance of it heading up mid-peninsula, the other 50% going harmlessly out like Narda did.... let's hope for the latter. Should know in the next 48 hours.

Let's hope it's the former or it's going to be extreme drought conditions in southern Baja this year.

Yeah, kinda like Easter Island, Chaco Canyon, and now Phoenix, Las Vegas, etc... sounds like the problem there is over-building on natural rescources. So, go ahead, wish for a tropical storm to dump several inches of water and wash out the crops, roads and infrastructures, flood their homes and maybe kill a few on the way. This morning's images are pointing to more central-peninsula, and I don't think Mulege needs any more flooding; they should have their winter crops in by now. I'll hope for a more southerly steerage for you and South Cape.
I like rain, and moist patterns that benefit. We're talking a possible tropical event here. Didn't mean to pee you off, but better peeed off than peeed on by Ma Nature. Happy trails.:)

shari - 10-13-2013 at 07:53 AM

dont be caught with your pants down amigos...keep an eye on Octave just in case!

SATELLITE DATA INDICATE THAT THE CYCLONE HAS STRENGTHENED DURING THE
LAST SEVERAL HOURS. ALTHOUGH BANDING FEATURES HAVE BECOME BETTER
ESTABLISHED...THE OVERALL CLOUD PATTERN IS STILL A BIT
ELONGATED FROM NORTH TO SOUTH. A PARTIAL ASCAT PASS AROUND 0500 UTC
SHOWED MAXIMUM WINDS IN THE 35 TO 40 KT RANGE...AND ON THAT BASIS
THE INITIAL WIND SPEED IS INCREASED TO 40 KT...MAKING THE CYCLONE
TROPICAL STORM OCTAVE. THIS INITIAL WIND SPEED ESTIMATE IS ALSO IN
AGREEMENT WITH THE LATEST DVORAK CLASSIFICATIONS FROM TAFB AND SAB.

OCTAVE IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN IN A FAVORABLE ATMOSPHERIC ENVIRONMENT
AND OVER RELATIVELY WARM WATER FOR ABOUT 24 HOURS...AND SOME
ADDITIONAL STRENGTHENING IS POSSIBLE DURING THAT TIME. BEYOND 24
HOURS.

bajabuddha - 10-13-2013 at 09:11 AM

BTW, just noticed on another page there's yet another 'invest' forming on the heels of Octave to the south and west, and 'puter models say it's gonna follow his path a few days behind, not as strong, but still wet. Looks like BCS is going to have its' blooms for sure; let's just hope no major damage for Mulege later this week. Y'all drive safely in the rain, and keep the black side down. :light:

steady rain here at La Aguja - woke me up at 6am, still raining now at 6:40, but seems to be tapering off a bit. can't see outside yet, too dark.

It's dry in Punta Chivato, Russ?!!!?
Don't doubt ya' but it sure as heck rained all night long in the town of Mulege!
The rain has finally stopped with the sunrise, but the dirt roads are snot-slick.
Kids aren't going to school and the fishermen are still snoozing.

Mula - 10-14-2013 at 06:37 AM

Lopez report:

Started raining heavy at 3:30 am and after about an hour went down to just a steady downpour. . .

Still steady and only a little wind.

And very dark.

Paula - 10-14-2013 at 07:02 AM

The day started with a heavy, soaking rain in Loreto, and it is still drizzling.
The sky is dark and gray.

Hook - 10-14-2013 at 07:03 AM

About three minutes of moderate rain at about 5am in San Carlos, Sonora.

Much more on the way, it appears.

OK so no laundry today and I'll go put the fly on my tent bedroom and bring the cushions in.

Baja Blanca....let us know when it starts raining in La Bocana! We have partly sunny skies still but looks rather ominous up your way.

Mula - 10-14-2013 at 08:07 AM

Pouring hard again - sideways - and wind coming up at 9am in Lopez.

The river of the street in front of our house is rising.

Still very dark.

Just had a call from Constitucion. The streets are full or water and it hasn't quit raining all night and so far today.

No school and only few places open there.

bajabuddha - 10-14-2013 at 08:16 AM

http://classic.wunderground.com/tropical/tracking/ep201315_s...

Y'all hang in there on the west coast; the main center of the storm is still offshore and won't reach land 'till probably later today/night or early tomorrow morning, so more water coming. Be safe. Looks like Mulege is going to get over 2" of rain in the next 48 hours. It ain't a hurricane, but it's nasty with winds and lots of moisture, and a smaller one being a few days behind it w/ a 50% chance of following this one's path (Priscilla). Buena Suerte to all.
{edit} forgot to mention, landfall looks to be just north of Mag Bay for the center of the storm for now, unless it turns; Constitution and Lopez Mateos are going to catch most of it.

bajajudy - 10-14-2013 at 08:42 AM

Just back from the beach and a recon.
The arroyo is full and running.
Although we didnt walk down to the boca, it looks like the estero broke through and from the looks of the current in the arroyo, no surprise.
My swimsuit looks like I went swimming when in fact I only walked in the rain. And it was cool with the slight breeze from the north.
Checked a container in the yard and it looks like we had about 2, maybe 3 inches of rain and it has started again.
Jeez, I thought it was green before. My yard is already a jungle.
Looks like this is a pretty wet storm.
Get out the buckets.

Yeah, but that old tech sat photo doesnt really tell much. No indication of the coldness of the cloud tops and/or how high they are.

Clouds mixed with sun here in Pescadero with the occasional rain shower and starting to get some gusty winds from the south to 20 mph. We've had a total of about an inch of rain.

Will do. BTW, FYI, as of an hour ago a new posting on wunderground is there's yet another 'unknown tropical storm' forming ESE of Priscilla, that makes 3 in a row now. Priscilla is (for now) no threat to the Peninsula, but is fueling some moisture into Octave which hasn't made landfall yet; still tracking north, but will turn and head to the coast by morning. It ain't over 'till it's over sez Yogi, and i believe him. Gonna be a wet October, folks.
Happy trails.

Light rain all day. .62" so far. I'd love to have this once a month or so. If this keeps up for 3 days though there could be some road damage coming into Punta Chivato. I'll go out tomorrow with the camera and see how we're holding up.

Lobsterman - 10-14-2013 at 02:47 PM

Bill,

I plan on driving from the East Cape to Lopez Mateos this Friday for 3-4 days of fishing. Is that doable in your opinion? How are the mangroves to fish after this much rain? I can not get ahold of my buddy who drove down from San Diego starting Sunday and planned on arriving at San Carlos today. Then spend a few days there until going down to get me. Things look bleak to me. Need to know cuz if I do not hear from him by Wednesday nite, I'm going to fly home on Friday instead from Los Cabos.

Fishing is fantastic here at Rancho Leonero. Will fish 3 more days here until decision time.

Dennis

Everything should be back to normal by Friday.

Mulege Pueblo 2 pm update

Mulegena - 10-14-2013 at 03:09 PM

~Continued medium-heavy rain constant since sundown yesterday, Sunday the 13th.

~No school today. Probably not tomorrow.

~Mex-1 from entrance of town to Pemex clear but for a little bit of small rocks skirting the right edge of the southbound lane just past the bridge overpass.

~North River Road to the Lighthouse is a big sloppy giant mud puddle but still passable in 2-wd.

~All in-town roads clear and drivable; can cross the river under the bridge overpass but cannot use the 2 highway entrances/exits. see below

~Electricity has been constant so far. No outages.

~The fishing cooperative have yanked their pangas out and up to higher ground. No plans to put 'em back in 'til this is over.

~Sister-in-law is in contact with relatives up in La Purisima who report lots and lots of rain up in the mountains. This is significant to Loreto, San Nicolas and Mulege as our arroyos begin up there.

~Relatives in the mountains also report a commuter plane, Loreto to Los Mochis-bound, crashed up in Los Comondus out of Loreto with 14 aboard today. Anyone know more about this? Confirmed: please read corresponding thread. Condolences.

~Important to travelers: Road construction on both highway approaches on the south river road.
To enter and exit Mulege you must come through the arches at the front entrance.

Thanks for the reply. If I am able to make it to Lopez Mateos this Friday, I'm worried about the fishability of the mangroves after this huge flood of freshwater fills them up. Back in the mangroves of s. florida and the Mobile Bay freshwater from major storms or hurricanes chases out the shrimp and the fish that feeds on them. It takes weeks for the fishing to get back to normal. I'm wondering if Lopez's mangroves are the same.

For some reason the rain gauge stopped working and I haven't had a chance to investigate why, but so far, I've measured 1.25" the old fashioned way.

Where is chuckie?

Thanks for the highway around Mulege update, willyAirstream.

Yes, always be cautious on Mex-1. Now, be extra-cautious.

Standing water and rock slides are gonna be common while driving through Baja Sur. Tropical Storm Octave wears a 10-gallon hat that's full to the brim.

Where is Chuckie? I dunno. He hasn't posted for several days. It's too wet to run over to his house. Has he gone north?

Oh, btw, one of the town ambulances is stationed at the military barracks up in Loma Azul as a precautionary measure during the storm.

I've not heard any evacuation warnings from the municipality. Since Hurricane John they're pretty good about letting the town know when to get a wiggle on.

Chuckie is north, i was be sarcastic :-)

He loves this stuff, being up high :-) all puns intentional.

buddha......The Sunday market was moved across the highway to Miramar after the arroyo flooded in the storms last month.

Dennis......Fishing in the estero should not be affected at all by Octave, and if one or both of the two trailing storms make their way up to Mag Bay they may bring some rain, but probably not enough wind to affect the protected waters inside. I've been fishing outside on the banks whenever the wind is down, but Ruben Duran fished in the estero last week and caught a little bit of everything including some snook.

Just drove back across the arroyo from Augies to Zaragossa about an hour ago, no problem. The Malecon was near axel deep and the spray was coming over the wall. We did have a 20 minute power outage here...candle time. Anyway still too much weather for K band TV but my Ham gear is doing fine.

......Colonia Zaragossa, under the palapa at the nether end of Manuel Pineda strasse.

The flight could have been Aerocalfia from Cd Constitucion to Los Mochis (no fight from Loreto).. Which would have had to cross the mountains near the Comondus..

5:45 ~ .07" since midnight.
Yesterdays total here in Chivato 1.62" from my gauge.
Last I saw this storm wasn't suppose to cross over the mountains until late Wed.
Well what I can understand now it has made it over and heading East. Should be a non event by noon here. Some one with more skills please ad their thoughts.
edit:
After some more looking I picked this Sat shot.

Appears to be a nonevent now.
