Beer SOB?

basautter - 10-12-2013 at 10:07 PM

Can anyone tell me how much beer you can take across the border into Mexico? Thanks!

David K - 10-12-2013 at 10:37 PM

Why would you do that???

(Mexico doesn't check for beer, but I am sure there is a published limit to alcohol going in...)

bajadogs - 10-13-2013 at 08:28 AM

A few months ago we were checked for beer going south into Mexicali. There were 2 of us and we had a 24 pack case of Pacificos. We were allowed to enter without problem. I know this doesn't answer your question. I'd like to know the real answer too. We wondered if the outcome would have been different if the beer had not been Mexican.

Officially it is 1lt. I have never been asked about any booze however. I will take cases and plenty of wine on most trips. Yes, I am a beer snob.

woody with a view - 10-13-2013 at 08:48 AM

we had a ton of gear crossing at san luis a couple months ago and the only question was how much beer? i had a 30 pack of TKT and they let us go.

#11. Passengers over 18 years of age, may introduce a maximum of up to 20 packs of cigarettes, 25 cigars or 200 grams of tobacco and up to three liters of alcoholic beverages, and six liters of wine; in excess of the above, cannot be imported without complying with applicable regulations and restrictions.

I have found subjectivity on alcohol for the rare occasions when I have been red lighted at TJ in both the old crossing and the new Chaparral xing. Wine and hard liquor seem to get a heightened screening vs. beer.

Thanks, I knew I had seen this and it was well over 1 liter, so good that you had the link!

willardguy - 10-13-2013 at 10:21 AM

durrelllrobert - 10-13-2013 at 10:29 AM

jimgrms - 10-13-2013 at 11:18 AM

Good question, Big D. By the way...I've recently taken a strong liking to one of the new-comers on the block...INDIO;

Same thing happened to us... I have a buddy that is a die hard Coors Light fan and likes to bring it to Baja. We got pulled into secondary and they were confused over what to do. It was only 3-4 30 packs. After a while, they gave up and just let us go with it. To me, it just doesn't feel right drinking non-Mexican beer in Baja! Gotta have my Pacifico!

Indio? Are you actually getting any kind of buzz on that? It is common on tap over here and I always get too full on Indio before I get any buzz from it. It's also pretty light-bodied for a "dark" beer.

Just bought a new TKT I have never seen. TKT Titanium. 5.5% ABV. Havent tried it yet. If Bud has a Platinum, I guess TKT needed a Titanium.

Another new one I found is the Bohemia Weizen, supposedly Mexico's first wheat beer. It's an ale very similar to Blue Moon with the notes of coriander and orange. I like it as a change from the other conventional Mexican beers. Unfortunately, it is a seasonal beer for the summer and I cant find any right now. Hope they bring it back next year. Believe this was the first year for it.

I get a buzz when I walk through the booze section at the store.....brain damage, and all.

All this beer chatter just made me thirsty.

Hook - 10-13-2013 at 01:12 PM

I know coriander and cilantro are supposed to be the same (and maybe they are) but the flavor of dried coriander is certainly way different than fresh or dried cilantro to my taste buds. Coriander as a spice is usually coriander seeds which seems to be part of the taste I get from Blue Moon and this Bohemia Weizen. It's nothing like cilantro to me.

vgabndo - 10-13-2013 at 01:20 PM

I've been reading some interesting things about cilantro. The reason some people really HATE it is that it is a food to which some people are actually allergic. There is something physiological in some people to make cilantro actually taste like something unfit to eat.

For its flavor value in a beer, there must be a trade-off economically.

free beanie with earflaps when you buy a 12pack, only problem is they only fit 2 year old size heads!
I've been buying those little barrilitos, I like em!

In cooking, a little bit goes a long way for me. Very pungent stuff.

This jives completely with the times I have gotten the red light and talked to the Aduana agents about how much I can legally bring in. I almost always "show" a quantity approaching the "nine bottle" limit that these regs imply. Of course I usually have more than that hidden away in the truck camper. Mostly wine and some specialty hard liquors like Hendricks Gin or Grand Marnier.

One time I was told that it didnt really matter the size of the bottles; that you could bring in 9-1.75 liter bottles. It was an Aduana guy who claimed they dont really care as long as it's nine bottles max, wine or hard liquor.

Definitely looks like they treat beer differently.............

Found the Bohemia Weizen again!

Looks like it might still be being brewed or there is still some for sale, even though it is seasonal. The bottles I bought today are the commemorative Frida Kahlo editions that are a relatively recent marketing campaign.

I found it at an OXXO with the other Bohemias; it is 81 pesos a sixer instead of the usual 79 for all the other Bohemias.

If you like a white wheat ale, similar to Blue Moon, this is as close as you are going to get down here.

Looks wonderful... :light:

basautter - 10-17-2013 at 07:39 PM

Thanks for all the great insight! I am coming from north of the border (NOB), and was not sure what to do if I still had beer left (probably not, but...what if...).
