Dogs in cages

A buddy of mine just sent me a article from the "Baja Insider" about dogs in cars must be in a cage or restrained. I don't recall this being discussed here on Nomads ( but then again I did not follow things very closely this summer). Does anyone know about this law? And does anyone know what restrained means? Any info. will be greatly appreciated.

Cops in Tecate have been pulling over gringos with dogs in their cars using this alleged "law" to bribe drivers. We were stopped in Tecate by a motorcycle cop who tried to get us to pay him for our infraction.
After quite a stand-off, he left in frustration to pursue someone else.

A friend was recently stopped in Tecate for this same alleged infraction. TO date, there has been no evidence of such a law.

I was stopped back in may by Tecates finest for my dog not being in a cage. Needless to say I refused to pay him and he finally got frustrated and left.
The only reason I posted this is that " Baja Insiders"( who are they?) just posted this along with liability proof of insurance requirements as being new laws. I had never heard of this and I realy got P----D off and wanted to check it out here on Nomads.

Mine is always caged ....

regardless of the law, if you care about your pooch, you restrain them in some fashion so they may survive a car accident. just common sense!

In Tecate, they started out with the claim that your dog needs to be in a seatbelt.
So....when I drive through with my dog in the front seat, I hook up her leash and run it through the connected belt across the back of the passenger seat.

They sell a doggy seatbelt that is basically the same thing.
I hate having to play their extortion game, but it's probably a judicious compromise......and it doesn't hurt.

EXACTLY, why so resistant to a simple safety issue for the animal? You may drive safely but others don't. It only takes a sharp stop and you got potential broken bones as the animal is thrown forward. DUH!!!!

Leased only. No cages are required. Seat beats are required for your dog, if it is the driver :-)

Make darn sure that your dog(s) is on a short leased BEFORE approaching the checkpoints. The guys in uniform don't like snarling dogs.......much less dogs jumping up on them.

Perhaps the cage thing......is required for ferry crossings(?) See this:

I don't know why but my Choc. Lab comes unglued when the guys come up to the car at the check points. After I snap on his leash and gets out he just wants to play. He's got me right thru the border several times and many check points. As for cages or restraints while driving.... not for my guy. He survived the roll over without a scratch.

Cages might be required for the 6 hour crossing to Topolobampo, but are not required for the long trip on the ferry to Mazatlan. We took our 2 dogs on leashes last November both ways . . . .and used the ferries very nice built in kennels on the ferry.

Don't know where you got this. My dog does not like uniforms while she is in the car (I think its the intrusion), but the soldiers also like teasing her (while the window is up).

The only thing they are leery of is a dog that is outside of the car.
