Buddy Boat

apogee - 10-17-2013 at 06:43 AM

I would like to set up a buddy boat trip to the Baja. I am squared away and have a seaworthy vessel but that does not eliminate the chance of an engine failure while out frolicking. If there are like minded fishing type people that are reading this and would like to set up a trip to the Baja for some private boat trips, let me please know. Nothing immediate, these things take time to plan correctly. I am very familiar with the Baja and over the decades have fished or dived much of it. I pull a 2002 Boston Whaler Outrage 230 with a Yamaha F300, full electronics, EPIRB and Radar. When fishing the Golden Gate or the Jaime Bank an engine failure could result in the next stop being near Guatemala. Best to have a buddy......apogee

Hello Apogee....I would try sending a letter to the yacht magazine Latitude 38 as most boaters who come to baja read it....fair winds!

Just a minute there Apogee >> you just told us in another thread your advice to all is "Never take more into Mexico than you are willing to walk away from"

So I guess you wouldn't mind losing that Whaler down here? That is, if you follow your own advice.

Hola, you might want to try bloody decks and/or vagabundos del mar...latitude 38 is for sailors not pwr boats...also while driving down you can meet other trailer boats at the gas stations...btw that yammy needs a lot of love and keep fresh thermastats in her and always flush with "Salt away"...Tight lines.....K&T

Hello Osprey. Glad to see that you can read. Despite my perceived adversarial nature of your comment, you are correct, and I am sticking with it. I pay for insurance. If I have to abandon my physical objects I shall without hesitation. No problem.

Always good to be a "Belt and suspenders" kind of guy. I carry a ResQlink 305mhz PLB. No subscription required

Shoot me a PM if you get to La Paz between Feb to May where I will have my 23' Parker

Apogee, If you're going to be exploring some spots along the way try stopping by Bahia Asuncion on your drive south. I am preparing an 18' Klamath for it's maiden voyage after much engine/trailer work. Fishing can be very good in BA, but it's a bit more seasonal than further south. Anyway, shoot me a U2U and let me know when you'll be in the neighborhood. I'll be going south for our spring clinic in La Paz about mid February and will be spending a week or so in BA so maybe we can hook up and buddy boat and if the fish gods are kind..........

GEEEEEZ!

I second the recommendation for SPOT. I don't go south of the border without one, with or without a wingman. Satellite phones are another option (SPOT makes one). They are getting smaller, cheaper and better, and are available for rent. Don't have one yet, but will soon!.

apogee.....I fish on the Pacific outside Mag Bay in the fall until the water cools, and out of Loreto the rest of the year. I'd be happy to buddy up if you're in the area and also provide you some numbers.

Fantastic guys. Glad to see the positive response. I am looking at who I can purchase a Mexican insurance policy. I have tried a couple of places on line but so far they want more money for three months coverage that is ONLY liability than to fully insure my boat and truck up here for a year. My insurance up here covers theft, liability, uninsured motorist, when the boat is on or off the trailer, environmental clean up, the whole shebang. I want my boat to be replaced or the money for it, if there is a mishap on the road or otherwise. There has to be a place out there that is reasonable, I just have not found it yet..
