San Diego to La Paz & back: Oct 29 - Nov 14

Hey everyone,

I shall be returning to Baja via San Diego on October 29 for 3 days of dental work in Rosarito Beach (4 nights) and another 2-week peninsula trip; turning aroundat Playa Tecolote / La Paz.

After a night at Coyote Cals a night in BOLA, I am doing the Bahia Tortuga/Punta Eugenia-Asuncion-La Bocana-Abreojos circuit (5 nights) before heading down to Playas Pacificas north of La Paz.

And a quick day trip to La Paz & Tecolote Beach before turning around and heading back north.

Alas, I shall have to omit a Sea of Cortez, east coast trip to Mexicali, San Felipe, Puertecitos and Pete & Olivia in El Huerfanito as well as Gonzaga Bay. Sigh. If the road from Highway 1 junction to Coco's Corner & Papa Fernandez were paved, I could do it with a rental vehicle. But since not, it would be a 300-mile round-about to get there. Sigh, again.

So I have a few items that I'd like feedback:

(1) short of the bus or hitch-hiking, is there an option to renting a vehicle (yes, AVIS rents in Mexico now) in San Diego and paying $30 insurance (on top of the vehicle rental) PER DAY which they require be purchased from them and not from a third party?

(2) Would anyone on the Mexican side want to rent me their personal vehicle? I'll purchase full-coverage insurance on the Mexican side for ~14 days. (no accidents or tickets in over a decade). I can get from San Diego airport to Rosarito on my own (Oct. 29).

(3) Since it's a 90% certainty that I'll be renting a vehicle --- does anyone need something transported southbound???

(4) Transported northbound???

(5) Would like to make a donation to the animal rescue organizations that I'll be glad to pickup and take down with me???

(6) Does anyone NEED A RIDE? Please note the trip map with my desired stops.

GOOGLE EARTH KML dynamic file available via THIS LINK.

Note: because of GE ideosynchracies, I've renamed the file baja2013.TXT. (1) RIGHT-click to save the file to your own computer; (2) Simply rename the file to baja2013.KML; (3) Then double-click the file to open it using Google Earth.

Just to be sure it is known... the Asuncion to Abreojos section and some/most of the Tortugas/ Punta Eugenia road from the Asuncion section is dirt.

When traveled in mid 2012, the Asuncion-Abreojos dirt road was very fast, having been just graded for the new water pipe installation. Hwy. 1 to Gonzaga (35 miles) is less dirt road driving than what you plan on doing out on the 'hook of Baja'. It could be rockier, however!?

Thanks David. I'll mention all this to the rental car agent.

Does anyone want to step up to the plate and rent their vehicle to a fellow Baja Nomad for a few weeks? Seriously. I'm a good driver off-road. Actually on-pavement, too. Seriously. Better than, David.

Yes... he takes his 2WD VW everywhere with ease! See his great trip reports and Google Earth maps posted over the years here. Gonzaga, San Pedro Martir, etc. :light:
