VW bug

I have a '67 VW bug that I've been thinking about doing some restoration work on. I'm looking for a mechanic who specializes in air-cooled engines, as well as a body shop. I'm thinking restoration to original, not tricking out, lowering, baja bug, etc... with good quality, preferably German parts, not the crappy China stuff out there.

Any recommendations in the TJ/Ensenada area? The bug runs pretty well so I can drive it anywhere, doesn't need to be towed.

That was my 1st car. I was lucky I worked pumping gas for a VW mechanic and mine was always a bit faster and cleaner than my friends. Good luck with the restoration.

The best year, 12volts and still simple with none of the later nonsense. Not sure about Baja shops, my engine was built at Volkers in Santee Calif.

Hey Chupacabra . . . take a drive to Franks auto body across from Coppel in Rosarito. Look down the side street.

Not an air cooled specialist but check out Johnny's for the mechanics, while you're in Rosarito. Gets parts. Excellent. North of Sandander around the corner. Further south at Pescador, ask for the shop. Leo or Leon. Through the gate and left about the 2nd chance. Looks like a warehouse.

Talk to the guys showing off their rides at Playas in TJ on Sundays.

In looking for parts, this is just a warning. Avoid an internet place called JustVeeDubs unless it has sold and the owner is no longer Jose Ortega.

We had him rebuild an engine for us in San Diego before we went to Alaska. We ended up at every repair shop between here and Alaska and in court when we got back! The full story makes for quite a trip report and the judge enjoyed it.

He changed to strictly an internet business, moved to Arizona and last we read, I think he went to New Mexico, but there still appears to be an internet site for JustVeeDubs. We had a judgement against his house in San Diego, so we were paid, but others have not been so lucky.

He has been written up on every VW forum I ever found after he ripped us off. I see that there is still an internet business called JustVeeDubs, and like I say, maybe he sold the business. Just beware.

For online VW stuff, Westfalia, I use 'Go Westy'. 'Bus Boys', and 'West Coast Metric'. My 1967 splitty Westfalia Gus the Bus was stolen wreaked then stripped just two weeks after my last restoral. I loved old Gus, had that van since 1970 with many Baja miles. Someplace I have San Pedro Martir VW camping pictures from about 1974. What I have now is an orange 1974 Westy front loader pop top. Gus's side tent and other accessories that were not inside were given to a friend restoring another '67.

Sorry bout Gus. Had a freshly restored 64 rag top bug that met the same fate in Inglewood Ca.

For the body restoration I'd recommend Eddie Fisher and his shop is the first place on the right as you are heading out on the "spit" in Punta Banda.

For the Engine and transmission work I'd recommend Tomás "Munchie" Fernández whose shop is located just behind the Calvary Chapel in campo La Jolla, Punta Banda.
He's a 3 time SCORE champ in the class 11, stock VW class.
