We have a full-service shop that can handle repairs
on most boats and offers incidental sales of parts,
boat accessories.

Doesn't sound too promising for parts, but they might have more info.

With all the boat stuff in San Felipe I bet there might be something there?

dizzyspots - 10-31-2013 at 05:26 AM

That was my thought as well...head south as planned and look for help in San Felipe...found a couple of marine stores in Yuma...nearby...open at 0800
or take my chances in San Felipe...

The good news is that OMC only used 16 different key cuts for evinrude outboards ignitions in the 77 series.
Look for the two little numbers in the metal below your key slot.
Yuma should have a locksmith who may also just bypass your key or make it turn with a screwdriver, or even have a key...

the key blank is made by Pollack...they make most "generic" keys...cabinets, lawnmower etc..hoping to find hardware, locksmith or marine place that opens soon...typing this from the hotel computer...

can't hurt to call the 24-hour emergency locksmith place

Well, it might sting your wallet...

pop the ignition wires out and figure out which ones start it. no need for a key.

This is the best advice, if you arent going to be down there for months. Try and secure some "jumpers" (12 gauge or so wire with small alligator clips at each end). Ideally, the alligator clips should have some plastic insulating covers over them. These will allow you to hot wire it and easily connect and disconnect when needed. You might not even need to remove the existing wires. Just back the ignition key assembly out of the dash and the connections at the back may be exposed enough to get the alligator clips on them.

And if you arent sure how to do it, in the immortal words of Gustavo Arellano.............ASK A MEXICAN.

For the key option, exhaust all possibilites in Yuma first. While a local in San Felipe may have the knowledge and the equipment, stocking keys (or anything) is often the problem in Mexico.

Hola dizzyspot,,,,Please take my advice as it's what I do for a living...DO NOT cut the wires...if anything is hooked up wrong you will blow a rectifier,,pwr pack,,trigger,,stator....big bucks !! and don't ask a Mexican,,its not a 77chevy...how many panga do you see broken ? electrical systems are not a Mexican guy thing...no harm meant but you must be trained.....and do not use a car ign switch..its very different...if your motor has a control box mounted on the side .which is what you should have,,right?? a car gas cap and RV side panel keys will work in that switch and any half witt lock smith can make up a key for that in a sec...and for gods sake DO NOT use jumper wires...that's about the stupidest thing Ive heard YET !! How funny... the border guards are getting stupider and stupider... Thanks for the follow up. Sorry you got blown out of the water... but there are other things to see and do around Gonzaga if you like any of these: off roading, hiking, history or geology... a palm oasis too!

ignition switch& keys

captkw - 11-8-2013 at 05:45 PM

21 bucks is a good price..thanks for the update !!the newer ones are a bit more...(Ya Think) on almost all outboards the BK/Y wire is the kill wire..shorts the stator or pwr pack to ground to stop/kill/turn off the motor ..and cannot be hooked up even for a second wrong ! I get 2/3 calls a year for a runawy outboard and the same for diesels...Nothing like a car motor....
