What's all the hype about Aspartame?

EnsenadaDr - 11-3-2013 at 05:03 AM

The news is teeming with negative reports about Aspartame. They are saying that Aspartame, the current popular artificial sweetener, causes diabetes and brain tumors, and just about everything else, yet the FDA and its equivalent in Great Britain have done numerous studies on the sweetener and have deemed it safe except for phenylketonurics.

The articles state that most people that use aspartame or drink diet soda containing the substance are more likely to be overweight and have diabetes, even go blind. Yet the population group that will usually use artificial sweeteners are usually the ones that need to lose weight or have diabetes to begin with.

What is the real poison for a diabetic, a huge fruit smoothie the morning or a cup of coffee or tea with a few packets of Aspartame? You be the judge. Here is a typical "healthy" fruit smoothie from Jamba Juice dietary breakdown. Can a diabetic or overweight person really afford the calories and/or carbs in this drink?

In Baja, they have D'Volada smoothies, which I can't even find nutritional information for and McDonald's smoothies, which can be found easily online. Even a bowl of fruit will cause the diabetic's feet to start aching...sugar and excess carbs are the diabetic's poison if consumed in excess.

Why not just cut down on sugar intake and eat healthy fresh natural foods?

High sugar diets are the source of diabetic and gut issues problems for many however aspartame is also an unhealthy substitute.

A child completed a study showing that aspartame will breakdown into formaldehyde when exposed to warm conditions.

Aspartame is linked to increase in cancer, it can be carcinogenic, toxic and harmful. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/34040.php

I prefer my food from the farm, not from the lab.

In response to food from the farm, not the lab:

Food has been played with by farmers forever.

That banana you hold in your hand is not the banana from 1000 years ago.

Having said that, I get where you're coming from. I ain't eating any lab food until it's been proven safe and healthier.

Dr., FDA does not do studies, they review studies presented by drug companies, institutions etc. It is "dirty science" at best and a VERY flawed system.

Timo1 - 11-3-2013 at 08:51 AM

When I worked up at Syncrude the guys handling the barrels of aspertame were dressed in full HAZMAT gear

That stuff ain't safe

Cutting down on high sugar foods sounds reasonable to me. i know what is better to eat, to avoid aspartame altogether.

Which sweeteners use aspartame?

gnukid - 11-3-2013 at 09:10 AM

There is a reason some cultures have periodic (annual) reduced diets, cutting out all sugars for weeks of will starve yeast in the gut and return to healthy balance. Starch also become sugar and of course alcohol is sugar too. Try a reduced diet for a few days or a week and see how you feel!

Thank you... never touch that! I use Sweet N Low in my ice tea (as it dissolves easily and is available everywhere I have lunch).

Honey in my hot tea, and flavored creamer in my coffee, fwiw... :light:

whatever aspartame contains, as soon as I eat anything with it in it, I get an instant headache and feel nauseous.

DavidE - 11-3-2013 at 05:54 PM

Aspartame, yeah! Take a swig of diet coke and the cloying moldy sweetness stays with me for a long time. Sorta like what cheap mescal does to a margarita - yyckk!

FREAKIN' FRANKENSWEET

I switched to Stevia several years ago and never looked back.

Bajaboy - 11-3-2013 at 06:01 PM

what's wrong with real sugar? Keep it real and in moderation:?:

DavidE - 11-3-2013 at 08:40 PM

Nothing. Unless a person can't consume sugar. Mestizo Mexicans, because of their indigenous roots have an extremely high chance of becoming diabetic.

Wanna see real action? Feed a bowl full of fresh corn to a type 1 or type 2 diabetic.

And, no one has mentioned fructose. A blend of 2/3rds Stevia and 1/3rd fructose yields a very good tasting sweetener.

Crap! Avoiding mega doses of sodium is hard enough in itself in Mexico , never mind sugar.

The astronauts eat lab food don't they. Would MREs be considered lab food?

Me too!!! You can get Stevia in bulk 12 oz containers and use a tiny measuring spoon (1/4 teaspoon)--------12 oz container of Stevia will sweeten 672 cups of coffee , which is the only thing I ever use sweetener or sugar for.

I buy "NuNaturals" 12 oz container which runs $23.29 a container at the local Health Foods store. That figures out to be .035 cents per cup of coffee--------such a deal!!!!

When in travel-mode, I carry the individual packets of Stevia.

Works for me. No stinkin aspertame poison for ME!!!!

Barry

Would anyone choose to eat MRE's if they had another choice?

Compared to the "Rations" of old, MRE's (meals ready to eat) really ain't that bad!!! I ate a lot of them while fighting Forest Fires over the many years. :O

Folks have given MRE's a bad name, which really is not that deserved.

On Edit: sprinkle a little Stevia over them, and yum yum!!!!

Thanks for the informative thread and the conversations it inspired.

Chupacabra - 11-5-2013 at 10:00 AM

Aspartame is harmless. It is composed of two extremely common amino acids, aspartate and phenylalanine, which are in almost everything you eat already.

Regarding the hype, when claims are made that something causes everything from brain cancer to diabetes, you can be almost sure it is hype.

Conversely, when claims are made that something can cure everything from brain cancer to diabetes, you can be sure it is hype.

By the way, Aspartame is a natural sweetener just like Stevia. It was discovered in the Yellow Lupine in the 1800's.

And yes, I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.
