Frontline Revolution Walmart?

mojo_norte - 11-3-2013 at 08:11 AM

Shopping for Flea meds for doggie. Fleas are not an issue here in CO so I'm a bit in the dark . I'm looking at Revolution on Petmeds.com @ 99 for 6. I've seen some similar looking stuff (topical) at the local Walmart for a lot less. Any suggestions on good stuff for Baja and where to get it...?

MMc - 11-3-2013 at 08:29 AM

It's all the same stuff, check it out. The patient ended about 2 years ago.

after years of research and trying spot,,front line,,,Advantage......I now use cedar oil or what i'm using this pass is "Tea Tree oil" cheap and works and your not putting poison your dog.. (Bad)... Any and all comments welcomed !!

"FRONTLINE" is the choice of experts [vets that I know], but as has been mentioned, they're getting viable competition. Read the reviews and compare ingredients. The price for Frontline is high.

We've used both frontline and advantage but the fleas that survive produce offspring not bothered by either product. Right now we give the beasties Comfortus which is working. I found with the kitties if I alternated the Advantage and Frontline they were effective. Tea Tree oil sounds good, a friend used big eucalyptus nuts to make a flea balm for his dogs that worked. There sure were a lot of ticks in the bush around Loreto after all the rain.

not much from DDT,,, its not god for a dog,,many side affects includeing death...my sister has a dog clinic in upstate NY and is trying to write a book about it..But,, she is So busy with healing ang helping dogs with nautral stuff..she hasn't had the time to finish the book...I spent 11K and two years at UC Davis with a dog (Baja) and can say with conviction vets are like docs...they all go with the machine aka AMA or in Vets case the DVM...all fed the same meds by the big corps.....anyone else here have a good,,healthy flea program ??

David K - 11-3-2013 at 09:07 AM

Use Revolution on our cats and it works 100%... Get from online source (need to ask Baja Angel). I know it was a lot more when we got it from the vet.

As for Tea Tree Oil... there may be a pet shampoo containing it from Melaleuca.com (but ordered from an independent agent).

How do you apply it - rub a bit on their skin like the other stuff?

cedar or tea tree oil ap

captkw - 11-3-2013 at 10:17 AM

I buy it from a natural herb store and add water in a spray bottle...seems to work well on my Baja dog...the Most Famous dog of Monterey bay ca...

David K - 11-3-2013 at 10:20 AM

100% Tea tree oil is very potent (as well as expensive)... it also may irritate skin at full strength... so blend it in with other things. I am sure there are online recipes?

Tea tree oil

captkw - 11-3-2013 at 10:45 AM

Here in Santa Cruz ca. Its 5 bucks a bottle (small) and goes a long way and seems to work....That said,, I will follow up with a update in a few weeks..but,, as for today it's working,,,,YEE HAA !!!

bajajudy - 11-3-2013 at 10:55 AM

We use Revolucion. It also has heart worm medicine. You should have your dog checked to make sure that they dont have heart worms before using.

Edit to add
I have never checked out Walmart....thanks, will check and let you know.
We get ours from our vet.

I have found over the years that lots of swims also does wonders...drown the little bastards !!

tjsue - 11-3-2013 at 11:18 AM

I ordered three tubes of Revolution for my cat from CanadaVet without a prescription, which 1-800-PetMeds required. CanadaVet also has a discount coupon every month, which I think is 10% off.

When I lived in San Diego, I had horrible flea infestations. I used Capstar, of which the generic version is available from eBay, and works just like the name brand, Revolution, and Raid flea spray in the purple can. It took three months, but I was flea free.

my reading on the meads is that the poisen (TOPICAL) SLOWLY ENTERS YOUR PET AND KILLS THE LARVIE...ooops..caps on..so it dosnt work over night,,,I have had dogs most of 53 years and remember DDT and the l;ike.. SO,three months is too long for my lady (dog) Lots of swimming and natural oils work for us..besides a awesome coat..years ago I used the ad,fro,& spot...but after doing a lot of reading and study,,,I went La Natural...K&T:cool:

Hook - 11-3-2013 at 11:29 AM

We dont have fleas over here in San Carlos. But we do take our dogs NOB for three months in the summer.

In the past, we treated them with a Frontline knockoff from Walmart. Believe it was Advantage.

Anyway, our 12 year old lab mix died a year ago, in November.............from massive liver failure. That's one of the suspected results of using these flea treatments that impregnate the dog's system with the poison.

Was it the Advantage? Who knows? It did occur right after the three monthly treatments of the summer. We arent taking chances with our current/future dogs.

We've gone back to the flea and tick collars for the remaining dog. It's only for three months. Just playing it safe..........or safer, hopefully.

Someone who lives in a high flea area like near the beaches of SoCal should try the tea tree or cedar oil treatment and see if/how long it works. Many of us would be interested in seeing the results.

DaGreen - 11-3-2013 at 12:06 PM

Thanks for the info on Cedar Oil and Tee Tree Oil. How often do you apply? I have two labs and they are constantly in the Sea of Cortez. Last year, one of my girls ended up with the tickborne Ehrlichiosis even though she was on Frontline. I was researching Advantix II. A good/cheep online medication store is http://www.pets-megastore.com.au/

bajaguy - 11-3-2013 at 12:13 PM

Where in the SOC was this???. Going to have our Lab there in January.

This stuff is new to me and I'm giving it a try. Contains FIPRONIL....the same ingredient that FRONTLINE claims.
Got it from Amazon....cost 20 bucks....FRONTLINE is 60.

Hola,,so sorry for your loss..Im still reeling from my last dog (Baja) but I have read so much about the flea poison to scrare the hell out of me...I sure in the hell will not use it anymore...And about Elichila,, I have known/found vets in BCS to blame it all the time when they really don't know the issue is/was...be advised.......I don't trust my dogs health to one (1) person (vet) get at least two opinon's...min......IMO...

DaGreen - 11-3-2013 at 12:25 PM

BajaGuy, LaVentana. Frontline still allows the ticks to bite, but not host on the dog that's why I was looking at Advantix II.

Hook, I too am sorry for the loss.

Capt, yes, definitely multiple opinions. I'm pretty natural when it comes to my dogs, it's just the stupid flea/tick/heartworm that freaks me out and really have to go with some sort of poison.

bajajudy - 11-3-2013 at 12:27 PM

We live in an area where cows, horses, and the occasional burro wander down the road so we have a major flea and tick problem. Revolucion is the only thing that works for us.

DaGreen - 11-3-2013 at 12:37 PM

And again, how often do you spray?? I have a bottle of 100% Tee Tree Oil from Trader Joe's that I think was $5.99

Thanks for the kind words, everyone.

It's been a year so we WERE pretty much over it. But we saved his ashes (yes, we had him cremated; dont want to run the risk of him being dug up!) and distributed them in the vege garden yesterday. Kinda the official start of the planting season. More pent up sadness was the result..............hopefully, he will "lend a hand" in the garden this season and we can feel good about that. He went into every row.

Poignant story, Hook. Lemme cheer you up with one similar.

A Nomad here [who shall remain nameless] along with her SO, would travel south with a film canister of the SO's father's ashes. His name was/is Joe and they called the canister, "Joe to Go," which he did everywhere with them, sometimes on the dashboard so he could see the Baja he loved.
I always enjoyed that story and have told it often..

Jack Swords - 11-3-2013 at 01:31 PM

Be aware of toxicity with Ivermectin especially with herding dogs. See http://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/toxicity/c_dg_ivermectin...

As an owner of two Aussies, we have been repeatedly warned by vets due to the use of Ivermectin in heartworm and flea medications.

Another course of action against fleas is a new monthly pill called Comfortis. Lots of info on the net with the usual credibility issues. We have not had any negative problems with its use, but the fleas feel otherwise.

pauldavidmena - 11-3-2013 at 01:43 PM

I definitely appreciate this thread, as we are hoping to bring our dog Tito to Baja one of these days, and as a Cattle Dog mix he has a tendency to "explore". We use Frontline here in the States for 7 or 8 months, and the New England winter takes care of the rest.

DENNIS - 11-3-2013 at 01:50 PM

As for Ticks.......Frontline in the squeezy tube is inafective, according to my local vet. The preferred method is the Frontline Spray...available online.
I once asked for it at Chula Vista Petco, and they didn't know what I was talking about.

A few years back we found "comfortis" it s in a pill form and is given to the pet with a meal... Has to have a RX to get... we order from petcarechoice.com
kind of pricey but no drops, no mess, no smell,,, and it seems to work great..
our daughter clued us into it when she lived in Lousiana... lots of feas, ticks etc.... we also get our hearworm tabs from them..
one tablet per month and we have had a problem with fleas on our long hair border collie...
again,, it is costly but outweighs messing with the topical stuff or collars.
thats all that matters easy and we are happy with it....

The castile soap and tea tree oil sounds like a good combo...if ya aint a flea. One of our dogs had skin problems that baffled the vets and exhausted the suggested products. What worked?....Head and Shoulders!....she is a happy little Pom.

I use Advantage II on my dog and 3 cats for flea control. I switch to Frontline for a few applications every year or so. That seems to counter the problem of fleas developing an immunity. The growth regulating hormone component of these products may be the more important factor in controlling fleas, especially indoors.
Purchase the package sized for the extra large dogs and divide it up by counting the drops when applying. That will provide several applications for a Chihuahua. The package for big dogs is from $0 to $4 more. That trick cuts my costs by around 80%
http://www.unitconversion.org/volume/drops-to-milliliters-co...

Pfizer says about their product, "Revolution", "Do not split the contents as the accuracy of the dose and effectiveness of the medication cannot be assured."
If you take a moment to do the dose calculation, you can keep these pharma companies from robbing you.

I've also had great results with Vet-Kem products with growth regulator, "Siphotrol" for premise (carpets and pet beds) and "Ovitrol" spray for dogs. http://www.vetkem.com/index.htm

similar looking stuff (topical) at the local Walmart for a lot less

mcfez - 11-3-2013 at 09:05 PM

We have five dogs here on the farm......there are ticks in all the surrounding fields. The dogs have been using the Walmart el cheapo stuff since it came out. Works just as well as the Frontline (we used for years). Not a tick at all.

We've been using frontline (the squeezy stuff) on our cats for 12 years and for 6 years on the dogs, haven't seen a flea or tick on any of them. They are all alive and well, maybe we are just lucky.....

Comfortis user

Whale-ista - 11-3-2013 at 10:29 PM

I'm in San Diego, not at beach but close enough: we have plenty of fleas. I've tried herbal remedies in past, with mixed results. I finally switched to Advantage/Frontline.

The Advantage stopped working this year and my dog had allergic reactions to the fleas, and that created serious skin infections. I didn't want to put topical insecticides on those areas. Thankfully, the comfortis is working well so far.

Yes it's expensive but so are antibiotics and vet visits.

tjsue - 11-3-2013 at 11:19 PM

Advantage stopped working on my cat two years ago. Apparently, the fleas are immune to it now. I had a horrible flea infestation the past two years, before I moved out of San Diego. I got rid of them, but it took three months, and a lot of work. I used Raid flea spray in the purple can on the carpet, and Revolution on my cat, after I used Capstar to see how many fleas he actually had.

Generic Capstar can be ordered from eBay, and it works just as well as the name brand for a lot less. It starts killing fleas within 30 minutes, but it's only good for 24 hours.

windgrrl - 11-4-2013 at 06:02 AM

We use Revolution when in Baja, from the local vet @ $200/yr. I started to wonder about the side effects last winter. Our wonderful 14 year old dog died last August after 3 amazing winters in Baja. She was healthy until we got home, then had many GI symptoms over several months, then respiratory failure, but tested positive for nothing. Excision of a small benign esophageal tumour did not improve her state.

Our new little mutt tested positive for Erlichiosis as tested here in Canada. That's why I asked earlier about the Snap 4 DX availability in BCS. We're using Revolution again because I think the diseases are worse than the cure in this case. Anyway, I did a lot of reading and here's a good layman-friendly discussion on pros and cons of various treatments:http://dogaware.com/articles/wdjheartwormprevention.html

Now that the patent has ended, there are many deterrents with the EXACT ingredients as Revolucion, Frontline, etc. That ingredient is Fipronil. That product is Pronyl on ebay for about $12.00 and it is excellent for my 6 dogs. Kills fleas, ticks, chewing lice. I get the one for extra large dogs and divide it up with a small (no needle) syringe.

I bought some generic Frontline made by Kirkland at our local Costco for our neighbor down in Bahia Asuncion. It was $19.99 for a 6 month supply (it was packaged for a larger dog - 45 pounds and up) compared to $69.99 for the same amount of Frontline.

Thanks, Paul. It's not a tough decision when you compare ingredients.
