Apparently I must dial something other than '001800' preceeding the phone number. Anyone know what's required for US '800' numbers? I'm using a Telcel

to call an 800 number, change the 800 to 880
to call an 888 number, change the 888 to 881
to call an 877 number, change the 877 to 882
to call an 866 number, change the 866 to 883

Be careful dialing "toll free" numbers as there might be charges that you might not be aware of when dialing.

find someone wiith a majicjack unit and you you only dial the 800 number..
no toll either way...

It also depends on the '800' number holder .. we blocked certain calls from being made because we pay the extremely high rates for forwarding and call
handling. When we had a USD $300 bill for several calls originating in Mexico to us, we made that decision quickly. YMMV and HTH
Vonage and Magic Jack are exceptional alternatives to ridiculously inflated costs for keeping in contact via voice.

Theoretically, the 880-type area codes were discontinued several years ago, but I know from experience that calling 001 880 922 0204 from my Telcel in
the Valle de Guadalupe got me to Verizon Wireless' "toll-free" call-in line.

Skype will also get you 800 numbers. It lets you set the country you want to be calling from, so I've been able to call both Canadian and US 800
numbers from Mulege no problems.
Edit: And the 800 numbers didn't use up any Skype credit = Free!

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I know all about Skype, MJ, etc.
Unfortunately, I'm sharing a single DSL line here in the campground so using the 'net for voice calls is pretty marginal at best. Thus, I use my
Telcel cell phone - much, much better service.
