End of the Eastern Sierra Season

The end of the final fishing season at Convict Lake, probably last of the swimming at Convict for Tommy Dog, and parts of the trail around the lake are becoming quite icy. One more storm, and the trail may be gone. Time to head for the desert.











BTW--- there appears to be some comment about the posting of these pictures here. I do post them elsewhere, so if there is objection here, that is no problem. I shall cease and desist. :biggrin:

Take him to Hot Creek (the road is behind the Mammoth Airport). Drive below the closed former swimming area.

Plenty of warm water there for swimming

Another set of nice photos Diana. Sure didn't take long for the trees to go leafless this year did it? . It seemed to go a little faster than usual. And I think I'm starting to love that old dog too.

Thanks---- and yes, a good snow in the high country knocked off all those leaves. We still have some color in the valley. Then again, the barren trees, IMHO have a real beauty all their own. We are just trying to get up in the higher country as often as possible before they are closed down. Today, we went a ways up Little Lake's Valley.

And that old dog will be 13 in month and since we lost our other fur baby this year, we have ordered him to stay healthy for a lot longer! He sure can't go like he did in his youth, but he does quite well and is so happy being out there. He is a very gentle soul who loves everyone and everything.

Bajaguy--- old Tommy Dog loves ice cold water. He also LOVES snow. He is one that has that goose down like undercoat and just does not get cold. But we like the hot springs. :biggrin:

wessongroup --- and a woof right back at you! I know how you love dogs. We are still suffering from the loss of our Maggie Mae 4 months ago, and we SWEAR that when Tommy's time comes, there will be NO MORE. The loss is just too painful. (we also said that 14 years ago when we lost another fur baby)

I haven't read any complaints of the pictures you've been posting. Where did you get such an idea? This forum was created for such trips so I can't see the reason. What's the objection? Bristlecone Pines? Convict Lake? Devils Postpile? Yes, those are very offensive. :wow:

Bajajorge, I don't know about the mountain as we don't ski, but maybe. We were in Mammoth the other day and there is still some patches of snow in town, but we did not drive out to the mountain. We have a few Doctor appointments in Carson City during the next couple of months and just hope we will drive through your neck of the woods between any storms!

Diana - I love your photos. The two photos of the kayaker are beautiful. That touch of color in the autumn sere and the watercolor effect on the water - you have a great eye.

When you say you are headed to the desert, which desert will that be?

I always enjoy your exquisite photos and your travel journals. They inspire me to travel to those places with my now 12 year old Paco. He too loves the cold water and weather. Keep them coming!

Thank you. And we seldom know where we are headed until we go. And even then, we may start out in one direction and change our minds along the way. :biggrin:

IF you let your dog swim in Hot Creek be darn sure you are in a location that isn't scalding. I had an employee many years ago try and save his dog and burned himself badly in the effort, the dog didn't make it.

That is really, really sad. I have heard so many stories about the really dangerous areas in that area. I think we will stick to the cold water that Tommy Dog loves, and the Keough Hot Springs pool where I swim and some of the back country hot springs our neighbors tell us about.

Sometimes I think we all forget how much our dogs depend on us to know what is maybe not so safe for them.

While dogs are very smart, I know that when we were visiting our son in Montana, he charged out to keep our Tommy from diving under a major snag. As he told us, every year there are dogs who dive under those snags and drown, and sometimes their owners also drown in the attempt to save them.

Our pets are smarter than we are in many ways, but in other ways they are dependent upon us.

Great photos, Diana.

Regarding the hot springs, we have an abundance of them around here and recently we were down in northern NV where we encountered several that definitely near the scalding temp levels. It was a task preventing my dog from plunging without testing first. She thinks every pool is there for her benefit.

On a side note: our little town is definitely "on the way to Montana", Diana. Please give us a shout if you find yourselves coming this way.

Thanks Allen. Our dog would also jump in before testing the waters, so yes, we also have to be careful!

We do hope to head back up to Big Sky Country to visit my son maybe next year. This is the time of year, he is headed down here. :-)

Hot Springs Advice

We use a hot tub thermometer on a long cord to test springs before we touch the water or let the dog out of the car.
