sorry to beat this whole thing to death but the
vote is to rent a car in Mexico and drive it down
the Baja - we would probably take a bus across
the border to the airport to rent a car - National
seems a fair priced agency - does anyone know
the process for getting insurance online (Baja
Bound) that would then be applied to a rental
car?

Any insurance you purchase privately will probably not be accptable by the rental agency. If you have major credit cards, call them and determine if
their benefits will cover some, or all of the insurance (get it in writing)......don't forget to tell them you will be in Mexico.

Car rentals in Mexico are far, far worse than car rentals in the U.S. The cars are in worse shape, it's more expensive, and they'll tend to be little
miniature cars that won't do well if you end up having to take one of the Transpeninsular's famous "detours". Last time I rented a car at TIJ, I got
this stupid Nissan Tiida that would pop open the trunk lid every time I went over a tope.
Several agencies allow you to cross into Baja from the U.S. with the purchase of THEIR insurance (not privately contracted insurance).
If you absolutely must do it, National will be fine.

Thank you so much - I will check these things out and much
prefer renting in the US for many reasons - but I did not know
where one could rent a car to take out of the country -
thank you again!

When contacting www.cabaja.com (California Baja, Rent-A-Car) remember to mention Baja Nomad to get the best rate.
