BajaNomad

Nomads are tough crowd, but hang in there, it is worth it! Some help is offered:

David K - 11-22-2013 at 04:18 PM

Some of us like accuracy and others like drama...

Some want to share and others don't...

Some want to learn and others are like old dogs...

Some seek friendship and others just prefer to be rude...

So, if you are new to Baja Nomad, don't let anyone blow you away... everyone here started as a Newbie (Noo-B?)

How I help (and it is for those who want it), here are some how to advice ideas:

:light: Big trip reports and wordy posts... love them, but please double space paragraphs or double space every few lines as it makes reading a world easier on the eyes!

:light: Baja Places... so you can search out more information, the correct spelling is key. I may respond with the better way to spell a place in Baja so you can find out more or sound more like you want to know. Here are some of the commonly misspelled Baja places:

LOS BARRILES
LORETO
MULEGE
GUERRERO NEGRO
SAN FRANCISQUITO
SANTA ROSALILLITA (ROSALIITA is perhaps technically correct?)
ALFONSINA'S
SANTA YNEZ (SANTA INES is technically correct, but not how the ranch owner liked it.)
PUERTECITOS
SAN QUINTIN
SAN VICENTE
SANTO TOMAS

There are plenty more, but these seem to be the majority. The AAA Baja map has nearly all the names correct.

:light: PHOTO SHARING...

This is a tough one for some... and until Nomad gets revised (don't hold your breath) to automatically resize too big photos, we with standard PC monitors would really appreciate if you tried to post photos that are not wider than the Nomad frame width (800 pixels). Otherwise, your photo and all text on the same page, gets stretched off the screen, requiring sideways scrolling. This makes viewing and reading less fun.

Many here use Photobucket.com to (free) host your photos to share on Nomad or other forums... When you upload your photos to Photobucket, first set the upload SIZE to 640 pixels (for big) or 800 pixels (for full page max for Nomad). The standard upload on Photobucket is over 1000 pixels if you don't adjust it.

Changing the standard size to Nomad friendly photo sharing is easy and does not reduce the quality at all. Your original photos on your computer are not affected:

Here are the steps:

1) Make an album on Photobucket.com for the subject or group of photos... or just to put photos you want to share on Nomad and other forums.

2) To set the size of the photos (does not reduce the quality) to fit here you click on your name at the top of the Photobucket page.

3) Click on User Settings.

4) Click on Albums (top of page). Scroll down and see Upload Options and just below that is 'Customize Upload Options',

5) click on that.

6) Click 800 x 600 for maps or max. size to fill the Nomad page or click 640 x 480 for large size photos that don't fill the page. Nomad is an 800 pixel wide frame, and if you don't resize to 800 or less, the entire page will stretch off the standard monitor and require sideways scrolling. You only need to do this step once or if you wish to change it.

7) Click SAVE.

8) Click on the big Upload box at the top center of the Photobucket page and simply select the photos you want from your PC folder.
========================================================

Now, to share your Photobucket album photos on a Nomad post:

1) Place your mouse on the thumbnail photo in your Photobucket album and select the IMG link of the links box that pops up or is already there, copy that IMG link with your mouse (left click, right click, click copy).

2) On your Nomad post, paste the photo link by right clicking your mouse, and click paste.

Add a caption below the photo if desired and double space between photo links so there is a separation between them.

I suggest not posting too many photo per Nomad post so those with slow upload speeds can also enjoy them... maybe every dozen pictures start a new reply/post?
===========================================================

If your photos are already on another web site, then they can be shown here using IMG tags on each side... Nomad has a button above where you type your posts, just for adding photos from other sites: (You don't need to use this button when posting Photobucket IMG links)
=======================================================

Yes, Nomad has a photo attachment feature, but that only allows one photo per post and that photo must be under 50 kbs in file size. Both those reasons make Photobucket an easier and better option, IMO.

I hope this is helpful to Nomads and is offered here as such.

Please don't be afraid to ask for help... at least to me.

Happy Thanksgiving!

May I add to the newbie.....

Always................The Baja.

motoged - 11-22-2013 at 05:03 PM

David.....

May I be a spelling cop???? Huh? May I? May I? Pretty please, may I.

( I know I"Can", but "may" I?) ;D;D;D

It's a rhetorical question....no real need to reply

p.s. Maybe some grammatically corrective role as well....:light: :O :saint:

Having just registered after lurking many years ..... it isn't just the Baja Nomad board , but ALL of the internet . Plenty of civil , nice people on here to make you ignore the other ones .

I've noticed several members who seem to enjoy combat . That's cool .... I guess . The key is to NOT become involved , and don't let people bait you .

Simple enough !

Didn't take long for an example of what I talked about, right? :wow::lol:

There is a button called U2U at the bottom of the post box, and that is Nomad's private message (internal email) system. Use it to communicate in private so as not to get attacked or embarrassed by the rude ones here.

Well I was farting around trying to post a picture here and 640x480 is just too big to post for me. Yet on another unrelated site it's too small.

Please try again... the photo you posted from your Photobucket album is over 1000 pixels and stretches the whole page off Nomad.

Here are the steps, again:

2) To set the size of the photos (does not reduce the quality) to fit here you click on your name at the top of the Photobucket page.

3) Click on User Settings.

4) Click on Albums (top of page). Scroll down and see Upload Options and just below that is 'Customize Upload Options',

You only need to do this step once or if you wish to change it.

7) Click SAVE.

In keeping with the spirit of things, I have learned that it is best and intellectually honest and fair not to initiate inflammatory political commentary where the thread itself is non-political or where no such commentary was provoked.

I can be rude! I have been rude! I will be rude! I don't want to be rude. I stop myself all the time from going off because somebody needs a place to shine. They call it helping others I call it taking the wonder out of the trip. There are many good ideas on this board.

If you are going to Baja you should be able to our own heavy lifting. You don't know how to airdown, should you driving that long sand /cobble stone beach? Many think, if they post here more will go. Some places are best left to the explorers and understand that more is not always better. Those poster's beaches and access to them are still open. I have seen Baja change and rarely is it better for the causal visitor camping their way down Baja.

If being rude makes somebody think before posting about a little gem way off the beaten path, then RUDE it is.
U2U should be used more often when it comes to those places we love the most.

Thanks for the topic!

I tried to become a big time contributer to the site a while back but was so hammered by some of the long time posters I gave up - in fact one said I either should marry my sister or whatever. . . . . I just wonder how many folks like me just now lurk as opposed to participating?

David, I am happy you used some of my photo's in your book and acknowledged it in the preface. Best of luck and you are welcome at our hacienda in Mulege at any time.

Hmmmmm----sorta defeats the purpose of the NOMADS board, don't you think???? or ANY information "board" for that matter. One can always not post if they don't like the content of the board, I suppose, or specific comments by an individual!?!?!? I don't think that folks are REQUIRED to post----know what I mean?

But I do agree that 'knee-jerk' posting is often a waste of time and energy, but not always. Nobody on this board really upsets me-----it's just their opinions, and nothing more, normally.

Barry

MMc - 11-24-2013 at 06:52 PM

I have no issue if you are posting about your town, business, what ever, you have skin in the game a what ever happens you will be affected. My issue is posting about a place you drove by (?) years ago and giving the details all about it. The place changes and it doesn't effect you in anyway or shape. Posting about road conditions when you have not made the trip in more then a year is B S.

There are no secrets in Baja, there are still some gems that some of still want to enjoy a little longer before they to are overrun. Some of us have watched place that we love go to hell in a hand basket. Forgive me if I object to some guy promoting a place he hasn't been to in years, for his ego's sake.

I have helped out people that read about a place on this board that were completely unprepared. I spent hours getting them out of a jam. That is what Baja is about, however I was without if something went wrong with us. I would rather not drive 20 hours straight to find out it's been closed off, or they put up a bar, screwed it up. The more people go to spot the more likely it will happen. "Bad roads bring go people. Good roads bring bad people." everytime a road get driven on the better the road becomes. Sharing on U2U is a far better way then spewing on this board where thousands will see it.

Why do you two think Nomad viewers will ruin your surf break? Maybe just maybe they are just as worthy as you or a future friend? In any case, my input is only on dirt roads and has never ever tried to give away your surf spots.

MMc - 11-24-2013 at 07:38 PM

Some of my gems are on the east side and the middle of nowhere. I does not matter what the place is. I remember a cave painting tread that talked all about it.
It's not just about you by the way. Well maybe in your mind it is.:O

So, we're not supposed to help each other out?? Like the guy in another thread who was driving to Cabo in a 40' motorhome with his wife and kids and wanting to do a round trip in a week. Do you want to get stopped for a few hours while they scape him and a semi off the highway down by Jesus Maria because he was driving 90 mph at night trying to make it to the tip in two days? Com'on guys. A little help to the new guys coming up isn't bad. You were new once upon a time, and needed help. Can't keep secrets for ever. Look at Rincon on a good N. swell. Just so dumb... but whatever... Talking about places in Baja is what this forum is about. You come here and take, take, take... and give what, me a hard time for sharing MY places and trips (never yours)... Chatty Kathy?

By far the most favorite place I have in Baja for camping is Shell Island... and I have been sharing it with my friends since the 1970's. Guess what, it is still as great now as then.

You don't have to share, but don't make me out to be a bad guy because I make trip reports or maps of where I go in Baja, or where I have been to...

The Internet is not a place for secrets, it is a place for sharing...

"Trade routes?" Gimme a break. The trailblazing was done a long time ago. Every dirt track you drive down, is in someone else's tire tracks. All I'm saying is if some one asks for info so they can have a safer or more fun vacation in Baja, and I can help, I will.

Yep, well said Woody, He'll never get it
I hope your sacrifice brings you surf, maybe a Mohawk?

DK my issues are not with just you but other posters as well. I call you out because of all the posting you do. You are the number 1 poster on this board and yet go go south, 3 to 4 per year? Seems a disproportionate. Yes, I know you love Baja, you also love being the "the man". Your history is great. Some of us wish you would quit spewing.

I hope you never lose your access to your little slice of heaven, it sucks when you do.

Perhaps in your mind, but I never met you... and as you haven't met me it would only be fair to not characterize me when you obviously do not understand my intentions. Do you see the windmill as a Baja Nomad who seeks help, but isn't important enough to take time to assist?

Thank Gawd David K has thick skin!!!!!

Keep up the great work, David!!! Your input is invaluable to me, and the main reason I am on the NOMADS board. Someday we may actually meet each other.

why do YOU think everyone wants to be like you? i wish you nothing but success, even if you are self aggrandizing, pompous and just a bit off your rocker sometimes. try looking at the world thru others eyes just once instead of falling in love again every time you look in the mirror.

have you ever stopped to think how sh!tty it would be if we all wanted to hang out at the same 100' square patch of cactus ridden dirt?

BTW, excellent job with the help topic!

Be careful, I feel the power of the censor key about to be struck! I feel like DK is Billy Mumy in the Twilight Zone episode, "It's A Good Life!" You know the episode where if you don't like this kid he turns you into a deaf mute and sends you off into cartoon land.

So walk gently, my friend

 good one.... thanks amigos...

Skeet/Loreto - 11-25-2013 at 03:40 PM

I think that David does a Great Job.

I have been with this Board for many years and when it was first started it was a Fantastic place to be.

Most of the Nomads that Icontacted were the "Baja Sur' Nomads. Then the Board became somewhat overloaded with the "Baja Norte' Nomads some who are not really Baja Nomads but the Products of San Diegos's hoar House.

David is very Knowlegeable about the whole area and does a good job of Investigation.Keep it David. Stay Loose and Stay happy!!!

Skeet/Loreto---Ole Gezser- Bigot--Racist-and a few more.

Nookster - 11-26-2013 at 07:39 AM

I consider myself one of the "worst surfers in the world". However a long time ago an old timer told me that the "best surfer is the one who is having the most fun". The 1st time I surfed was in 1970. I was in the Marine Corp and just another swamp rat from Louisiana. My buddies and I were on the base and down by the beach at San Onofre. After a few beers a Marine who was from California talked me into taking a plank of a surfboard out into the waves. Within 5 minutes I was dragging that plank back in with a nice gash on the top of my head where the board cracked my melon. Even with blood running down my neck and being totally exhausted it was exhilarating . Since then I have surfed off and on for decades. Always making sure that I never quite surfed enough to lose my title as the worlds worst surfer.
Being a bad surfer comes with benefits though. 1-3 ft swells is a perfect day for me. If its crowded I can always go down the beach away from the lineup and have a great time on the mushy stuff with my 10 ft. board. The beauty of Baja for a surfer like me is that the waves I seek are almost never crowded or a secret. Unlike San Diego county were I primarily surf.
When I have encountered a desolate spot in Baja with no one in sight and big beautiful waves peeling left or right I just sit there and admire it. These waves are way above my skill level. But to me at that moment they are my waves and my surf spot. It becomes one of those few things in life that you selfishly keep to yourself. I just drive off and hope it will be the same if I ever come back.
Now, that I'm moving down too Baja I'll hopefully have a lot more opportunities to see these great and beautiful places. If I do I'll be sure to "Not let you know where". ;D
I think this a great forum and I really enjoy all the diverse personalities and opinions. Like the "secret surf spots" I hope it stays that way.

Nookster, you get it!!! Enjoy your move. Go have fun.
No rude for you.

We're on the front porch debating if we are going to stay or go...but either way we're in Baja time. Just hobbled home from a Conchita's VIP lunch!

this is directed to those a few posts above. since you are such Baja warriors why don't you tell me where this little marker is? i'll give $100 to WiLDCOAST if anyone can pinpoint this spot! it's 25 feet from the road.

no multiple guesses and you gotta be within 5 miles so "it's in Baja" or "the road to Pta Conejo" doesn't work. there is a geological formation within spitting distance of this:

Ensenada???

captkw - 11-26-2013 at 06:30 PM

woody with a view - 11-26-2013 at 06:35 PM

i think Ensenada goes all the way to GN or San Ig as far as the municipality is concerned.

David K - 11-26-2013 at 06:57 PM

Ensenada County (Municipality) does go to the state border. San Quintin 'county' is new, but not sure when it is official. San Ignacio is in another state, so no, not near the Ensenada municipality line.

Woody, would you like some extra help on how to set the upload size, as you seem to still be challenged by it? Nomad is 800 pixels max. I am happy to help.

I like that it's by a boojum!

Do you know where this one is?

woody with a view - 11-26-2013 at 07:12 PM

no and no.
