KINO'S 1702 Map of California (Baja)

One of the first maps to show California as a peninsula, after many years if it being illustrated as an island.

Padre Kino actually explored to the Colorado from Sonora in 1700. Most disputed the discovery, even after Padre Ugarte (in 1721) and Padre Consag (in 1746) also saw the north end of the gulf come to an end at the Colorado delta.

Another version of it:

Yuma, Guaymas and Loreto all plot within 10 minutes or so of latitude. I don't know if he had a good longitude tool then or not.

The early latitudes recorded were often 1-2 degrees off.

That makes this even more remarkable

... assuming the latitude tics were plotted when the map was drawn, not later....

makes it seem likely they used a backstaff for altitude; it seems to have replaced the astrolabe around then.

Sometimes, the old guys did good work!
