11 days SOB

woody with a view - 11-27-2013 at 12:09 PM

For the past 2 months we've been outfitting the 20' travel trailer to spend the rest of its life in Baja at Bahia de Los Angeles, upto and including a new TPO single ply roofing membrane with a 50 year warranty. It's good to work on a construction site!

We left last Friday around 6am and made out breakfast stop in El Sauzal at the world famous El Trailero. We needed to wait 20 minutes until they opened and WOW have they upgraded the place! All new interior and paint job. As usual, the tacos are top notch!

We were concerned about traffic as the Baja 1000 was just starting and so we took the commercial route around town with zero problems. There was no issues with race traffic all the way to our destination. The only snag was the Pemex in El Rosario looked like a parking lot with 50 rigs there. We bypassed it and got 10 gallons of gas from the roadside vendor in Catavina.

The next 4 days were spent getting the trailer dialed in and getting accustomed to our new digs. We fished with out new neighbor Andy one day for spotted bay bass out at the islands. We saw Fin Back Whales and Whale Sharks and had a great time. The fish tacos that night were amazing! Try seasoned Masa flour without egg wash next time. Better than beer batter, or maybe just something different?

We closed up the trailer and headed for Bahia Asuncion and got there just as a front was passing thru. 2 days of rain showers and then it cleared. We passed the time beach combing, surfing (it has been the smallest Nov in recent history!), and just having a great relaxing vacation. We stayed at the Casa Pargo and met a bunch of cool people (you know who you are!). We finally got a day on the water and scored 3 Yellowtail, 2 Skipjack and a metric butt-ton of Bonito. After 3.5 hours the Yellowtail bite evaporated so we went back to the beach to spend our final day cleaning up and getting ready for the 12.5 hour drive home.

We made the border at TJ at 8:30pm and wasted 2.5 hours of our lives sitting in line. I picked the 3rd lane from the left and it was the SLOW lane. Now I've got until Monday to recuperate from vacation before returning to work! All in we put on about 1450 miles. Gas was 11.7 pesos per liter.

I've sure spent a LOT of time at Cerveza Lane & Tequila Way! I'll most likely run into you guys down there at some point.

If any of you want instant grins and laughter you HAVE to meet Woody and Bia

Great trip report Woody... Your new home location is a surprise... being on the non-wave side of Baja... but I don't blame you!

Nice to see 4baja's street sign is still there... Here is a photo I took when we camped next to his trailer in 2003... That was the trip we found Inky the dog going to Mission Santa Maria...

Yeah...11.71 today. That's $3.41 a gallon at todays rate. Goes up at least 5% in a month.....that would be 17 cents today.

woody with a view - 11-27-2013 at 02:19 PM

we like the fact that the fish are always in BOLA and the surf is not far off. easy day trips when the swell pops up going forward.

Loved those shots from south of town. Glad to see you got in the water. I bet you had some good food on this trip. I need to know where that Taqueria is.

BornFisher - 11-27-2013 at 05:08 PM

Glad you guys had a great trip. Must have been a bit SLOW taking the trailer on that road south of town in BOLA. It is one BAD road!!
Congrats on your new pad!!

Pacifico - 11-27-2013 at 05:10 PM

Looks like a great trip! Is your new place in Gecko or thereabouts? El Trailero is one of my favorite taco stands! (I think Tacos El Poblano in GN is my #1...Curt introduced me to Tacos El Poblano, thanks to you Woody! (I think he told me you recommended it to him.)

Taco de Baja - 11-27-2013 at 05:23 PM

Sounds like fun to me. Good fishing, good surf, good food, good friends, and no break downs.

Thanks for sharing.

You got a lot accomplished in eleven days! Welcome to the Bahia neighborhood, we are just a short walk up the beach from your new digs. We are on the same page regarding popping over to the Pacific side. It's also a nice to take a break from the summer heat.

Saludos,

Bajaboy - 11-27-2013 at 09:40 PM

Good seeing you and Bia. Explored some secret beaches north of town today and could not believe all of the standing water along the way. Crazy how much rain has fallen this year. Hope your next vacation comes quickly!

Whale-ista - 11-27-2013 at 09:56 PM

Thank you for fun trip report. Looks like a great 11 days. Loved the whales.

I'm curious anout the trailer setup. Any interior shots to share? In addition to the reinforced roof, What other changes did you do to prep for staying put in BOLA?

woody with a view - 11-28-2013 at 01:00 PM

Trailero is on the east side of the road just a bit south of the fish processing plant just south of the san miguel toll gate. El Poblano is an off shoot of the one in ensenada according to the person slinging tacos and they are good!!! right across from the cowboy hotel in GN. we also ate at Valentino's in San Vicente on the way home after remembering a reco from here. 2 doors south of the Pemex. VERY GOOD food.

no interior shots. it's bacically just got 2 beds, a refer, sink and shower/toilet. all i did to the trailer was retro to LED lights, bought a 45 watt solar steup to run the lights and refer, had a new cooling unit and one of the borads replaced in the refer and that's about it. oh, and i was on the fence about buying a break controller. best $120 i spent in a long time.

i got in on the ground floor as far as leasing goes and figured i'd jump at the chance and see where it goes..... Catch One For Curt!

For over 20 years Valentino's has been one of our regular stops because of the family and the very good food! Glad you enjoyed it.

Congrats on the trailer and I hope you have many years of great times in BOLA and the surrounding areas!
