Toll Costs

Normally we cross at Tecate for our trip south. This year we are considering the Tijuana crossing.
We have a MH with a tag axle and we are towing a Jeep. My question is about how much will the tolls add up to from Tijuana to Ensenada?

i think we just paid 30pesos at each with 4 axles.

60 p for motor home


30 p for tow vehicle


90 p x 3 toll booths = 270 p total


the toll is per wheel not axel

Most motor homes with tag axle would have 8 wheels. The towed jeep would have 4, for a total of 12. Would this be 10 pesos/wheel at 3 toll booths?

Just a note; the road is generally in great shape except one area towards the southern end that has been documented before but has large bumps, be careful! The area is well marked.

Yeah...it's a geological fault zone, said to be the south end of the San Andreas fault. The road and everything around it is slowly [I hope] sliding into the sea.

been sh!tty there at Saldomando since i was in 9th grade. i wonder if they could bridge it and save all the hassles. remember this is the 21st century!

Might be easier to go up/back around it. Maybe to the free road. it's just a matter of time. They've already lost some houses on the edge up above the Toll Plaza.

No it isn't. It's per "eje"—axle. Your calculation is right, though: 180$ for the 3-axle motorhome (doesn't matter if it's a tag axle) and 90$ for the towed car, as though someone were driving it. 270$ total.

For God's sake go slower than the speed limit at Saldamando. I bounce like a freakin' baby in my truck over that stuff even at 60 km/h.

There was talk at one time of preparing an emergency route from BajaMar to the free road if there was a major slip, however not heard anything in several years.

Seems like they are devoting a lot of manpower and material to continually patch instead of finding a solution.

Don't think a bridge would work as that whole area is unstable and would not support bridge footings.

The federal government needs to start working on a permament rout that avoids the slide area.

A Camino Federale I spoke to said that if there were heavy rains in the area, they were told to block the highway in each direction.

Perhaps...just perhaps, this is one of the reasons they're going to large efforts to fix up the free road. Come over a week ago and what they've done is nice with a lot more in progress. :?:

If the toll road goes, and they are talking about a heavy rain, the free road will be a mess between Ensenada and La Mision.

Myself...with a motor home and towing would not even think of taking the "calle libre " Too slow for me !! and they charge by the axle...I know for sure on that !! drove a "casa RoDante" thru out mexico and Baja !!! and imo the fees are not bad for a nice road !!!!!:cool:

Yep, only 1 peso / km TJ to Ensenada for a car.
The toll road(s) from Tecate to Mexicali (135 km) costs 1.5 peso/km and the toll road(s) from Mexicali to San Luis Rio Colorado (77 km) costs 1 peso/km

Yeah...that's never nice, but I don't think it would be the first time the quota was closed and rerouted over the hill. Maybe it was back in the 80s when the San Miguel bridge washed out.
