G N Breakin

Bajame - 12-1-2013 at 04:13 PM

At the Cowboy Hotel people said they had their car broken into and they took everything they could get . Said they were pro's at it. They even tried to get the battery but the cables were to hard to get off.

And...that's why you should never clean them.

BajaBlanca - 12-1-2013 at 04:32 PM

thanks for t.he heads up. what a terrible thing to have happen

David K - 12-1-2013 at 04:47 PM

"People said"... I guess hotel guests, but are they people you know or how did you hear of the story Bajame? Were "they" vacationing cops and that's how they knew it was a professional job? Was the car inside the hotel's courtyard in front of a room?

Bummer for sure... Local police reactive?

shari - 12-1-2013 at 04:57 PM

that sucks...the night watchmen there used to be the chief of police here in Asuncion...I'll get the scoop. Pretty strange if it was inside the compound.

They'll make a statement right after they wash the battery acid off their hands.

bajaguy - 12-1-2013 at 09:22 PM

Bump!

We're driving south on Friday, likely to spend the night in GN, so this is interesting
to us. Maybe w eshould shoot for Cataviņa or San Ignacio...

Lee - 12-3-2013 at 02:24 PM

Keeping this up front in case there's a problem at Cowboy.

Something's not right here.

shari - 12-3-2013 at 04:16 PM

I just spoke to the owner of Cowboy and believe me he is upset about the break in. His reply was that these things can happen especially with the increase of meth use...but in 4 years, it was the first robbery there.

Rest assured the night watchman will be more alert from now on. Sometimes they make coffee in the office which is at the front of the building giving someone a chance on the inside.

He also mentioned that the new entrance will be gated and the watchman will be in the little cubicle right there so he can see anyone coming in and the inside parking lot... so he said to tell you all that the place will be very secure.

norte - 12-3-2013 at 04:58 PM

must have been a very slow coffee maker if they took everything including trying to get the battery....

Bajame,
Did they break the windows to gain access or a slim-jim to unlock door?

Lee - 12-3-2013 at 05:30 PM

Thievery can happen at the Carocol or Cowboy, again, and for thief's who work quietly, it's not a problem.

Once locked my car keys in a rental on Oahu, Seaworld parking lot, someplace like that, large tourist parking lot, called AAA, hour later I'm still waiting, 1/2 dozen teen age boys walking nearby, told them I'd pay them if they could get into my car. One kid pulled out a slim jim, looked around, then popped the lock. About 2-3 seconds.

My car has a blue LED flashing when my alarm is armed. It lights up the entire car. THough the hood isn't armed, 4 doors and a hatch door is.

This isn't a fancy alarm and though it's connected to the car's battery, the alarm siren cannot be accessed. At the Cowboy, the siren would be about 30' from my room.

Think about a car alarm. The car broken into could not have had one. These weren't Pros.

Thanks Shari.

Our dog is usually with us when we drive. We stayed at Caracol last time through, and while it is good that they allow dogs, I think they have only one dog room. It was pretty much like sleeping in a kennel, the smell was really strong. Cowboy is better with a dog.

Yep, all the rooms at Cowboy smell like a kennel.

vandenberg - 12-3-2013 at 08:30 PM

Stayed at the Cowboy last August.
Not worth the money, pretty spartan and bleak.

motoged - 12-3-2013 at 08:57 PM

Keep the dog in the car....cheap alarm.....unless the bad guys have doggie treats

Our little Maggie Mae who we miss so very much would have barked and done her best to scare off the bad guys.

But our Tommy Dog would just wag his tail, and hand over the keys! Watch dog is just not in his job description.

It is one of those situational dog things.

Oxxo...seriously...the rooms always smell wonderful at Cowboy...I've stayed there dozens of times and it's very clean...and has a no dog policy by the way but they can be persuaded to look the other way for responsible doggie parents.

Most of their clients are commercial and government people...only tourists have pets along.

I guess the point is, meth heads are everywhere and one must be aware of the possibility of one's car getting broken into at some point in their lives...so dont leave valuables in your vehicle or yep get an alarm.

sequoyah - 12-4-2013 at 07:37 AM

Stayed at Malarimmo the same night and had no trouble at all. Glad we chose that instead of the Cowboy.

captkw - 12-4-2013 at 08:02 AM

most folks dont think about the simple fact that its a border town !!! and I have yet to see a border that's not a bit on the shaky side......myself after many bad times in/near GN avoid gn at all costs !! Catavina to san Ignacio is a good run...and if you spend the night in GN you will almost always have FOG on the deck in the mornings to drive in...(winter)..."the armpit of BCS"......nothing there anyway !!

Weren't pros for sure, as a pro would have been prepared to sever the battery cables in a few seconds instead of trying to disconnect them with a wrench.

monoloco - 12-4-2013 at 08:22 AM

Hey captkw, what's the deal with all the double posts:?:

WHAT!?!! Leave our best friend in the car??:O

I'm really sorry I started all of this negativity about the nice hotels in GN. I'm sure it was just an off night at Caracol, and the safest place in town is probably the Cowboy right after an unfortunate incident.

Never had a problem in GN and we love dinner at Malarrimo, just to look at that big old photo! So pretty and mysterious!

And you have no idea how we locals appreciate that.

The last thing we need its another old man that knows it all about everything, travelled everywhere and has really done nothing for us.

:lol::lol::lol: And some of them are almost as cute as my dog.

The theft thing can happen anywhere. Heck, once we had our truck stolen in front of three armed security guards.

The dog issue is always a bit of a problem. We travel with our dogs, now dog, all the time, but we respect people who have a NO dog policy for all or some of their rooms as it is a real problem for people with severe allergies, as is the case with one person here. It is very, very difficult for people with allergies when a hotel says no dogs, and then allows dogs.

I've only stayed at Cowboy 3 times but each time I felt my vehicle was very safe. It was 5 feet from my front door, in a courtyard, monitored my a night watchmen. I stayed there the night before the Baja 1000 and there was a ton of valuables on chase trucks etc.....no issues whatsoever.

Not sure why people are piling on a good establishment. Actually, I know why....this is the internet.

Have a good day.

I love GN!
The bird sanctuary
Tours of the salt factory
Sunset out at the old lighthouse
Hikes in the sand dunes.
Fresh seafood.....Tony's roadside stand
Que mas quieren?

windgrrl - 12-4-2013 at 10:31 AM

I really like GN and area. Cowboys was great last March. The upstairs room we had was new and lovely. I would stay there again. Sure, there were some rough edges, but thank heavens it's not like home where crime doesn't ever sleep. Go on a night shift ride-a-long with the police some night.

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

Talk about timing !!!

captkw - 12-4-2013 at 11:09 AM

As I don't know shinola about real estate and such matters...But a friend of mine that does,, just called me about the new "club med" that's gonna be coming to GN....she suggested I get over to GN asap and get in as she puts it "the ground floor" for some great prices on the new timeshares...I'm In !!!

It is a salt mine company town (originally)... with whale watching tourism adding to the economy in winter. Here is some history I wrote on Guerrero Negro (Black Warrior): http://www.bajabound.com/bajaadventures/bajatravel/guerrero_...

I have a soft spot for GN as well. Many compare it to San Quintin because of the fog but I find GN to have a lot more character. It's usually delightful until about noon, before the wind starts to blow, and then things get less pleasant. We have many fond memories of that area. Perhaps the best is that it has largely remained unchanged, ungringofied.
