This tree was given to me about a year ago. I believe it to be endemic to Baja. Any idea what it is? I looked in the old Baja Plant Guide and did
not see any tree with this particular flower.

I believe it is a Box Thorn. It should have bright red berries. It goes dormant in the summer in BOLA.Mexitron - 12-12-2013 at 02:15 PM
I think Oggie is right---one of the Lycium species. Also called Wolfberry. Not tree-like though to my knowledge. In the tomato family.David K - 12-12-2013 at 03:12 PM

On page 264 of the older Baja Plant Guide and on pages 386-387 of the new guide: Desert Thorn/ Box-Thorn/ Wolfberry/ Frutilla/ Salicieso.
No photo of the exact variety (Lycium brevipes) but of its cousins in both books.
It is a shrub and not a tree, however. There are 13 species in Baja California.BajaBlanca - 12-12-2013 at 04:27 PM
Thanks folks. I thought it would grow into a tree, but I guessed wrong. Muchas gracias!David K - 12-12-2013 at 06:35 PM

You can try Blanca... ! The Japanese have mastered turning trees into little bushes... you just need to do that in reverse!Mexitron - 12-12-2013 at 07:42 PM
David's probably right---if you took one main branch and trained it vertically you could make a small patio tree out of itBajaBlanca - 12-13-2013 at 01:23 PM
