Low Key Panga type whale tour?

the one i took several years ago was at San Ignacio
lagoon with one fisherman (who was licensed to do it) in his panga - it was a beautiful, simple and inexpensive experience-that is what we would like to do this time - does anyone know if this is still possible? and is Christmas the "season" or too early - I do not remember when I did it last time - I lived in Baja then and life was more "timeless"

December is early for moms/calves. The Solo males tend to arrive first, moms w/babies later, but you never know for sure.

San Ignacio still offers camping and panga tours. Kuyima typically charges $8-10/night for camping space, with basic amenities +has affordable meals in a nice dining lodge. 3 hr tours are about $45. These rates fluctuate annually.

There's also panga operators and camping at Scammons lagoon/ojo de liebre national park. Not sure of prices there.

Whales are coming early this year so there are already some grays in Ojo de Liebre lagoon by Guerrero Negro...I suggest you go to Las Cazuelas restaurant on the right side of the highway just coming into Guerrero Negro (bright orange with lots of plants)...and ask about their panga tours...they are low key panga type tours in a really special spot in the lagoon where moms go to have their calves so you may get lucky and witness a birth!!! tell them Shari sent you!

The price for the panga tours are the same at both lagoons and has been about $45.00 unless it has gone up in the last year. That is if you drive yourself out there and hire the panga tour directly. Of course if others take you there and make the arrangements, there will be additional charges.

The road out to the San Ignacio Lagoon is partially paved now and it is such a beautiful trip out there. If you don't want to drive it, you can ride in a van from town.

Christmas time is early and to check on the whales in San Ignacio, you can always contact Kuyima or Terry and Gary at Ignacio Springs ( their website seems to be working again) or check with Bajame here on nomads as she also lives in San Ignacio. And there are others --- and everyone in San Ignacio knows when the whales have arrived. :biggrin:

Several choices for San Ignacio Lagoon. Our favorite is Kuyima, but some prefer others licensed groups. The number of boats that can be out in the whale viewing area is limited at any one time, so they all work together. Enjoy where ever you go!
