Toyota Tacomas are made in Baja California, if it helps with price and it is a far better made pickup, according to all the Ranger owners I know....

Ford Raptors (F-150) are great and in no way anything like a Ranger!
The Toyota de Baja California factory is on Hwy. 2 between Tijuana and Tecate... I posted some photos of it as we drove by in my Sept. 2010 trip

Ranger was discontinued in 2011 in the US. It is stll sold abroad and as of 2013 was available in Mexico. Base price advertized at 298,000 pesos.Riom - 12-17-2013 at 09:52 AM

Insurance for the US is not a problem. Most comprehensive Mexican policies for Mexican-plated cars include (free) coverage for the US and Canada as
well (including liability), but they do vary so check this. Generally the US part of the coverage is US$100,000 combined single limit (but more, or
less, is possible). The premiums go down each year in line with the drop in value of the vehicle. My full insurance, for all three countries, is
currently under 7000 pesos/year (not per 6 months).
In Baja California (Norte), the tenencia (annual vehicle tax) was abolished a couple of years ago for private vehicles, except for luxury vehicles
over a certain value (appears to currently be 500,000 pesos).
The actual buying process I don't know much about (but would like to know, as I'm also planning to buy new or slightly used in Mexico in the next few
years to replace my imported car). I've heard it's basically fixed price for new cars, so the Mexican car magazine price guides should be helpful to
get an idea of what's possible. Also, check the spec carefully, as some features (like extra airbags) may be present in one country but not another.
Make sure the dealer helps you with registering and getting the plates (should be a same-day thing, but needs lots of the right paperwork). Take some
proof of residence, and your BC license. There are various taxes and fees charged at each annual renewal of the plates, mine were just under 1000
pesos earlier this year.
If you're planning to travel to the US as well, it would make sense to get a model that is available in the same model years (and as similar as
possible) in each country. Makes finding parts easier in the future.

Incidentally, I imagine the Ranger will return in the U.S.... Chevrolet is reintroducing the Colorado in 2015 after they realized that people who want
a small Chevy pickup would rather buy a Tacoma than a Silverado.
