Soundtrack for a Baja road trip?

aster - 12-19-2013 at 02:21 PM

Got our iPod pretty well loaded up for the impending road trip, one thing I noticed though is the lack of Mexican or other musica en Espanol on there. A little Chavela Vargas, Lilia Vera (Venezuelan anyway), is all we've got and I'm not sure either would qualify as driving music. Some Calexico for the gringo (albeit excellent) take on border life.

Any recs for good tunes appropriate for cruising thru the Baja desert? We tend to dig an old-school organic sound as opposed to anything overproduced, Mexican stuff is ideal but I'll take a listen to anything en Espanol...

aster, it depends on your mood and circumstance, I suppose.

My favorite music to listen to on a moonlit night cruising south through the scenic cactus and rocks of Baja is...Plácido Domingo, one of the 3 tenors.

Simply good for my soul...and I think the coyotes like him.

Cruising north is a different thing altogether, so I try XM/Sirus surfing.

I very much agree --- and I love driving to Mozart and in the desert, the theme from Elvira Madigan works real well.

Check out Mark Mulligan at markmulligan.net. A few songs in Spanish, but a lot of songs about Mexico ("Pacifico Blues", "Too Much Wishin', Not Enough Fishin", and many more).

What is the name of the group that sings LaBamba on the end of Shari's Whale Magic Tours video. I haven't been able to get that out of my head for weeks. It starts at about 9 minutes in.

Miguel Montoya - 'Varios'

Obtained a copy of this CD from a Mexican buddy and it's become my all-time favorite Mexicana musica! No idea where to purchase or if it's easily found in Baja but I highly recommend.

There is this title on Amazon but have'nt heard it - Tengo Miedo
