LaPaz advice

Ken Bondy - 12-21-2013 at 10:11 AM

Mija Coleen is planning a trip this summer to LaPaz to get her son scuba-certified with Cortez Club. They operate at both La Concha and Costa Brava Marina. I have stayed at La Concha and liked it very much, have seen Costa Brava but never stayed there. Would appreciate any advice or pros/cons on either place. Mil gracias.

La Concha is nice, has a great pool, bar and beach and not far from town. I think rooms may be hit or miss. Costa Brava is also nice but further and generally restaurants are expensive though quite good and there is a golf course!

Thanks gnukid. From town is Costa Brava towards the airport or in the same direction as La Concha?

Costa Brava is past the La Concha towards Isla Cerralvo.

Hmmmm, Costa$lotta or take a chanca??? Personally methinks a small B&B or VRBO to stay and some wise negotiation with the local pangeros appeals more.

always have enjoyed staying at La Concha

I really like the traditional Mexican beach hotel vibe at La Concha, and the fact that they have their own (small) beach. The food is hit or miss, but it's an easy drive into town.

We have our boat in CostaBaja right now.

It's beautiful and has everything, but it is very high end. If money is no object, it would be quite a treat.

You might want to look at VRBO to see if some of the condo owners may have a good deal.

And if you like to golf (and money is, again, no object), the course here is outstanding. We went on one of their sales tours in order to get greens passes - worth it.

You should also be aware that it is about 5 km out of town on a road that is under repair. They have a shuttle service and we like being out of the hustle and bustle, but we also have a car.

At any rate, I'm not familiar with the other place, but wanted to give you some info on CostaBaja.

well im confused. last month we had a look at costa baja, wow is it nice!! is this the same place as costa brava??
I have stayed at la concha right after it was opened, I remember being the only ones there!

I assumed he meant costa baja. I'm not aware of a costa brava marina.

Color me confused as well.

My mistake, sorry. I was influenced by the previous post and they DO sound similar, Brava=Baja! At least I got the correct direction, so cut me a little slack.

Both places are very nice but also very different. La Concha is maybe1 km closer town and is more like a traditional mexican hotel with a very adequate restaurant and pool and is the headuarters for the Cortez Club. Costa Baja is a relatively brand-new complex with Marina, Hotel, condos, home and golf course about a kilometer north (toward Pichilingue).

Summer in La Paz is pretty much the off-season due to the heat and humidity but of course the fishing is hot as well. You didn't mention the length of your stay but if they will have a vehicle I would recommend following the advice of a previous poster and look for a condo on VRBO.com.
Because it is the off-season (except for fishermen) you may be able t get a lower price depending on length of stay.

La concha is nice in the summer as you can swim/snorkel right out front. Not possible at costa Baja.

Ken Bondy - 12-21-2013 at 08:16 PM

Thanks for all the information! Sorry about the typo, I meant "Costa Baja".
