Score was sold last year to Roger Norman,He bought the name. He seems to be
keeping things the same.

Yes starting in 2014 the Baja 1000 will go to La Paz or Cabo every year. Well until Norman finds out what Sal did and that it is too expensive for the
teams and they start dropping out then it will be a loop race with a run south every couple of years.David K - 12-23-2013 at 11:09 PM
The 1000 has run every year since the first in 1967, EXCEPT 1974.
It began as the Mexican 1000 under NORRA. Tijuana to La Paz in '67; Ensenada to La Paz in '68-'71; Mexicali to La Paz (via San Matias & San
Quintin) in '72.
Mexican officials kicked NORRA out and replaced with their very own BSC (Baja Sports Committee) and ran the RENAMED 'BAJA MIL' (1000) in 1973 from
Ensenada to La Paz via San Felipe, Gonzaga and L.A. Bay for the first time. Money to pay racer winnings disappeared.
1974, after a disaster of a Baja 500 with nobody showing up, Baja officials asked Mickey Thompson if his new SCORE organization would run Baja races.
In July, 1974 he did... it was a success (called the 'Baja Internacional' and about 400 miles long). That secured the deal to contract with SCORE, but
there wan't enough prep time to put on a 1000 race that year.
1975+ The SCORE BAJA 1000 was launched as a loop race of about 800 miles in the northern state of Baja California, starting and ending in Ensenada.
Some years, it was closer to 600 miles and called the Baja 1000 Km. Some years it started and/ or ended in Mexicali. In 1979, SCORE secured a deal
with the southern state of Baja California Sur and ran their first Ensenada to La Paz race. Since then, SCORE has alternated between La Paz or Cabo
finishes and loop races in the northern half only. In the year 2000, they doubled (almost) the length of the race and called it the Baja 2000. At

David, Thanks for the concise and accurate history of the Baja 1000. I have been a little concerned that the new owner might not be able to keep
things going the way Fish had. It takes a lot of effort to pull it off three times a year. I used to work for Score in the 80's running checkpoints
and it was a blast to be involved. I always wanted to race it (motos) but never had the money or skill to do it. I like that it will come through

De nada Nick... I been going to see Baja races since 1973 and helped Los Campeones Race Team in the late 70's and early 80's and was a co-driver in
the '79 1000 (the first SCORE La Paz run).... So, the details are personal. I often wonder where some of the info (even on official) sites comes from
regarding the races, and what happened in '74 (it wasn't a fuel shortage)!
I remember how nice both Mickey Thompson and Sal Fish were when I would ask them about Baja racing. Sal (as I am sure said to every entrant) said to
us, at the starting line to 'have a good race' and 'see you in La Paz'!
