parts delivery from L.A. to Guerrero Negro, Baja California Sur

bluevisionexpedition - 12-28-2013 at 02:23 PM

Unfortunately our car broke down. We are in Guerrero Negro and need parts shipped from a company in L.A. Shipping takes quite long (we are still waiting for our first shipment of parts) so we are hoping to find a faster way. do you know somebody driving from L.A. down the Baja? Thanks & happy travels everyone:-)

BajaBlanca - 12-28-2013 at 05:51 PM

dang, we just came yesterday ....

have it sent fed ex to your hotel. very fast.

DianaT - 12-29-2013 at 09:26 AM

Just a bump--- anyone headed down?

Blanca, how long has Fed Ex taken for you? When we have sent things to La Paz from the states and sent it the fastest way, it has still taken a week or so and it goes to the mainland first? How are you getting it fast or is fast a relative term.

bluevisionexpedition, I hope someone can help you out. We are planning on heading down, but not for a few months.

That's awesome! Thank you so much. we will send you a direct message!

BajaBlanca - 12-29-2013 at 11:56 AM

actually Diana, I figured to G Negro would be fast via FedEx since it is not a small town but I have no experience and since you mention it, it would indeed have to go the DF first ....nix that thought.

BUT BUT BUT

when we first moved here to La Bocana 7 years ago, Les's Company in the States had a very important document for him regarding retirement and they said it would arrive AT OUR DOOR here in La Bocana.

We looked at each other and laughed.

Well, golly gosh, it was indeed delivered to our door, not overnight but in 3 days which was just amazing! Must have cost a right fortune and we don't even have street numbers so I have no idea how they found us, nor do I remember the name of the company.

back to thread:if Ken can get it to Dave then you have MAJOR SUCCESS.

broke down in GN

If all else fails the option of getting back to the border could be what I did in the 80's. The local lumber yard delivers there and goes back to TJ empty. I had my 4 wheel ford van drop its shroud and destroy my radiator and I, as a result got to experience my first ever ride in a long haul semi back up to the border. What a trip! Going around a curve one time in the mountains two trucks met at the same time and had to inch their way around each other and I mean literally inches to miss each other at a crawling speed. Baja never fails to provide an experience to remember always. Just a consideration if it comes down to needing it. I think they charged about $100 to $150 at the most and it was all gravy for the driver to boot and why not? Those roads on a truck like that are for a special breed to be respected. On the other hand another time at dawn south of Constitution I was run off the road by a truck in this same van and somehow managed not to roll over and almost made it to a stop before I hit a culvert and did my front axel in. It ended up having to be trucked back to the border after sitting in SJ for a while and not being repaired due to lack of available mechanics and parts. My insurance did me well and I enjoyed further trips without this type of adventure repeating itself. Thanks to all here for the daily fix on my beloved Baja until I can return.

Everything, entering Mexico goes through SHCP SAT in Mexico City first. Even mail. Items that are valued less than 99 dollars US and are NOT sent from the orient are tax exempt.

Getting items across the border is the trick. Once they get to Tijuana they can be sent by ABC bus, Baja Pack or Estafeta.

You might want to try to take a bus down to La Paz and shop around here

I'm going to sleep now. Leidys and I are going to get up (kinda) early to pick up the parts for 'bluevisionexpedition' in Orange and drive it down to Carlsbad where it will be delivered to our new Nomads. Afterwards, Leidys and I will go visit the beach in Cardiff for the afternoon before driving home. It should be a good day, and we'll help people at the same time.

This brings back memories of when my Ford Ranger's transmission lost too much trans fluid up in the Sierra San Pedro Martir, and I put out a plea for help on Amigos de Baja. I'll never forget that time. My good friend Andrew (RIP) showed up all the way from San Jose, CA and we had the Baja adventure I'll always remember.

bluevisionexpedition - 12-30-2013 at 09:38 AM

we appreciate all your comments!
special thank to Ken and Leidys & Dave (Rumrunner)

DianaT - 12-30-2013 at 09:58 AM

And very soon, it will be nice to hear that your vehicle is repaired and you are off enjoying your travels!

bluevisionexpedition - 12-30-2013 at 03:07 PM

Thank you for all your great help. Unfortunately the whole thing with rumrunner and Ken Cooke fell into the water because the parts were not ready today.
We are still looking if maybe there are some travelers heading from LA to Guerrero Negro or further south.

If no luck we will ship UPS.

Thank you for all comments and suggestions
Ivan&Fabienne hanging in there in Guerrero Negro

Maybe a transport company like ACV. Ship parts to SD and their trucks leave friday mornings all the way to cabo and all ponits in between. Cost is your invoice plus 20 - 22 percent. 16 of that is import fees.

I contacted ACV - their cost is now 30%, but it will help me in not having to arrange a trip into Tijuana for shipping (extra gasoline, car insurance, etc.). Thanks for this great resource. 2 to 3 days is great.

Thank you Willy Airstream for your valuable info. That is how are going to ship.

Happy New Year and safe travels
Ivan & Fabienne

willyAirstream - 12-31-2013 at 07:36 AM

I know several people using ACV and none pay 30 %. Fee is negotiation. Btw you
do not have to pay state sales tax when using an import company, as you are in mex. Your seller may require a BOL form for his records, easily available from ACV. That reduces your fee expenses.

This is good to know. I'm good at talking hardship.:saint: What is a BOL form and where do I get one?

Shiny new parts!!

Ken Cooke - 12-31-2013 at 02:46 PM

Good news! The G-Wagon will be back in business - Thursday morning (early), I will leave for Otay Mesa.

willyAirstream - 1-1-2014 at 08:25 AM

A BOL form is issued from the transport company to the seller. It just verifies that the buyer is out of country for the sellers tax records. Easy. Some sellers do not ask for it.

Bill of lading=BOL

FYI, BOL means "Bill of lading" which is the name of the document describing items to be shipped, quantity, destination, contractual terms for payment of all fees for import, taxes etc.

it's like a bill of sale, but specifically for shipments.

"noun
1. a detailed list of a shipment of goods in the form of a receipt given by the carrier to the person consigning the goods."

Ken Cooke - 1-1-2014 at 09:58 PM

Tomorrow, I'll pay a visit to ACV Logistics. Afterwards, Leidys wants to hit the outlets in San Ysidro. It should be a full day while helping our new friends from Canada. :bounce:

ACV worked out well

Ken Cooke - 1-2-2014 at 10:18 PM

This morning, I drove the auto parts to ACV Logistics. These parts should arrive in a timely fashion to Guerrero Negro (on Saturday). Thanks to Baja Nomad for information about this company. Ivan and Fabienne thank you!

Still unable to explore Baja

Ken Cooke - 1-5-2014 at 11:04 AM

The Good News: The ACV shipment (I orchestrated) arrived in Guerrero Negro yesterday --

The Bad News: The [Oil Pump] USPS shipment (sent earlier in December) is stuck in Mexico City w/Customs.

So, our new Nomads in Guerrero Negro are still stuck, unable to explore Baja.

BajaBlanca - 1-5-2014 at 11:08 AM

that is indeed bad news .... wow .... seems like you need to order a new oil pump? and use the new fabulous Ken system?

BajaBlanca - 1-5-2014 at 11:09 AM

BTW Les says the mechanic in Vizcaino can get parts from the States pronto.

Let me know if you are interested in contact info.

615 156-0056 is our landline.

shari - 1-5-2014 at 12:45 PM

I concur with Les...Arturo at Valle Auto Parts orders and receives parts from the USA fast. Also...we will be in Gn tomorrow and Tuesday going to see some baby gray whales at the lagoon...maybe we can have dinner or even take you whale watching...might as well have some fun while you're stuck eh!

We will be at Cowboy...where are you?

bluevisionexpedition - 1-5-2014 at 07:26 PM

Thanks everybody for all your feedback!
We are optimistic that the customs will release the parcel soon. Just bad timing over the holidays!

@Shari: we look forward meeting you tomorrow!

Ken Cooke - 1-9-2014 at 08:46 PM

Did customs release your package yet???

shari - 1-10-2014 at 08:56 AM

It was really nice dining and introducing you to the whales at Ojo de Liebre. Hopefully our little jaunt to the lagoon cheered you up a bit...I hope you post some of your photos here in a report.

You will have a good story to tell and some of the few people who have spent time appreciating what Gn hs to offer instead of passing right through it. Think of your setback as spanish immersion!

Here we are ready to show you your first whale!

this was how our adventure started...with some nice spyhops calling us over.

then we watched some newborn babies rest on the mom's nose as she was napping.

we found a sickly whale with respiratory problems that lifted it's head out of the water with each breath.

and our voyage ended with some antics of a mama rolling on her back and showing off a bit.

Maybe if your truck hadn't broken down, you wouldnt have experienced the magic of the lagoon! Hope your part gets there soon amigos.

BajaBlanca - 1-10-2014 at 11:13 AM

What a good idea to go whale watching. Have the parts been delivered?

bluevisionexpedition - 1-10-2014 at 08:22 PM

Our parcel that was sent with USPS on Dec 24 is still at customs in Mexico City. Nobody could tell us how long it takes. Therefore we ordered another oil pump from Switzerland with DHL Express. shipment should be here at latest on Wednesday.

And yes... our first whale experience with Shari was amazing. You can check out some pics here:

wow, I loved your pictures...you did very very well capturing the whale essence your first time! I have my fingers and toes crossed that your part comes in.

bluevisionexpedition - 1-10-2014 at 08:32 PM

Yes, It was meant to be:-) It was great to spend time with you too. It was amazing to see & learn about these fascinating gentle giants and their newborn babies! And yes, it definetly cheered us up.

But there are worse things in life than being stuck here. We are "just" waiting for car parts. it would be worse to be injured and to be in a hospital. Also it teaches us many lessons. Learn to accept that these things can happen and to be patient and to make the best out of the situation.

That's good news!!

bluevisionexpedition - 1-19-2014 at 10:27 AM

thought we give you a quick update.
It is unbelievable that the first oilpump we ordered from a shop in L.A. is still not here??!! the parcel was sent with USPS on Dec 24 and is still at customs in Mexico City (last scan from January 9 but it does not move). If the garage refuses to accept this package will it be sent back to the shop in L.A.?

luckily we ordered another one (original part) from Switzerland (no other oil pumps available in Mexico or USA). Was shipped with DHL Express. it took 2 days from Switzerland to Mexico, then stayed over the weekend at customs and arrived Tuesday morning in La Paz. Although they confirmed to deliver here on Wednesday, it finally arrived yesterday afternoon. So total 10 days. Now busy putting everything together and we hope to be on the road tomorrow.

we are wondering how it works with the taxes that we had to pay. Do we get it back as soon as we leave Mexico?
