Same thing could happen on the Tecate road, or any 2 lane road, at any time.

I got turned back on my way to Tijuana a little before 5 PM. On the way back to Ensenada traffic that needed to get north was pointed in the direction of Guadalupe. I just returned to Ensenada. Didn't want to see thousands of headlights coming straight at me on the country road. Lot of people already partying.

Bajadock's note: Friends were stuck in traffic on Free Road Dec 31 2013 just after this truck accident occurred. "K66" is approximately the summit of El Tigre Hill. Though I have bicycled that hill dozens of times, I don't know the specific curve, "La Herradura"(horseshoe). It must be the first big curve northbound when descending from the top of the hill where I have seen other accidents. According to my friends, headed to Tijuana New Year's Eve, traffic was turned around to drive south in order to catch Hwy 3 northbound. No report from southbound traffic that evening that was stuck at the bottom of the hill.

El Tigre is a beautiful and unique road cut through a mountainside and has approx a 8 degree hill grade. The hill is 2.8K in length(1.66 miles) and rises 700 feet from the sea level floor in La Mision. That grade plus curves makes it a dangerous spot. Add the traffic now diverted from the closed toll road and you can expect more trouble in future. I have also driven this stretch approx 80 times in 7 years without incident. Cuidado!

It took almost 2 days, but the 12/31/2013 accident finally found reporting....

Por Benjamín Pacheco/EL VIGÍA

The free road Tijuana-Ensenada, roads appeal due to the recent sinking of a 300-meter stretch of the scenic toll highway, was blocked for two hours by a tractor stuck diagonally up to the curve La Herradura.

The accident occurred at kilometer 66 on Tuesday, December 31, 2013, at 15:15 hours, as reported by the Commander of the Mission delegation, and no one was injured, it was a Kenworth tractor, 289JS-8 plates, color blue, Ernesto Cota led by Rogelio Castaneda, from Playas de Rosarito.

“The vehicle was among the two lanes dangerously lopsided, leaving four of its wheels detached housing pavement,” according to the police report.
Commander Sergio Enrique Echevarria Solis said the mishap was probably due to the lack of expertise of the driver, as the burden of plywood tilted to reach the curve.

“He gained weight and was stranded in the line of rails, there was hampering the free movement in both directions,” he declared.

To move the tractor was required a tractor, later came to place agents of the Federal Police Division Paths and Federal Roads and Bridges (Capufe) to normalize circulation.

I HATE when that happens!

"normalize circulation." ... I like that one

Say, does this mean the annual "bike" ride to Ensenada is off ... just asking :):)
