BajaNomad has been so great for fun and for trip planning! Thank you for the assistance.
We will be down in Loreto to stay in a hotel with some friends in March. We'll have all our camping gear with us. The question is if there is a
secure place to store gear while we have fun in and around Loreto? A truck bed a camp stuff and prob kayak and maybe SUP's.
Also, any problems with theft if the car is left out in front of hotel, no secure parking at this hotel, have stayed there before but only with a
rental car (had no problems) but I'm much more careful about my own rig. The hotel is near 'Mikes Club'.
WHALES:
My second subject on here is What is better Lopez Mateos or San Carlos. We plan to drive over there for the night and then whale watch the next
morning and drive back to Loreto. Shari replied a few weeks back (thank you) but we won't be that far up north until later in the trip. So trying to
decide on best spot for a night in a hotel and whale watching for the day.
Thank youMula - 1-3-2014 at 10:59 AM
For whale watching - how late in March.
They are pretty much headed north from San Carlos and Lopez by the middle of March.
The whales are already here. No calfs yet, but several pregnant mom's in the bay.rhintransit - 1-3-2014 at 11:12 AM
whales probably will be gone from the Pacific by mid-March, worth a call/try when you're here, probably not enough around for a trip to Lopez Mateo.
we are fortunate to have the blues and orcas and such in the sea off Loreto. sometimes spottings are numerous, sometimes not, am not sure of the
best time of the year for it. the best place to check would be the little museum on Salvatierra near Mexico Linda. if the director is running his
whale trips, you'll have a fabulous time with an expert who knows most of the blues by sight.
car thefts, unfortunately, are possible, the economic downturn has brought out more of this. better safe than sorry. if your hotel cannot provide
safe storage/suggestions for storage, you might check with the storage facility near the airport, they have units and also provide secure vehicle
parking, plus airport shuttle. also Tim Yarbourgh, near the ice plant, has safe storage, for vehicles, I think. you can find him on Facebook.

We will be there March 14 or so. Think that will be too late for the whales in San Carlos/Lopez Mateos?
I had read that people had great experiences in March, but maybe that was up in the BA area?
Thanks for the info on car security. I'll have to figure out something so I can use my car during the day and everything stays in it overnight!rhintransit - 1-3-2014 at 11:45 AM

if you can lock the car, you're probably fine. anything unlocked on top/in a non-secured truck bed/an unlocked spare tire or such has the potential
for walking away.Mula - 1-3-2014 at 12:39 PM
Asuncion is going to be your best bet for whales that late in March.
I wouldn't waste me time or money on the Mag Bay deal that late in the year.
And I would not leave a car on the streets with stuff in it in Loreto. Locked or not - that would be an invitation.
Economics are hard for the locals this year especially with the new tax increase on everything.
Many hotels have secure parking inside their gates. Might have to take a look at that.
Otherwise Tim Yarborough's place is close to where you will be.Loretana - 1-3-2014 at 12:56 PM
I had a great experience whale watching at Lopez Mateos last March 18th with my guests.
My inclination is to persuade you to do your whale watching in San Ignacio Lagoon, because the regulations there are the most respectful of the
whales, and in my opinion, the BEST operators and venue to see them. The lagoon there is more protected, less chance of blustery weather, and a great
place to camp. But that is a trip you would have to dedicate more than a day to.
Lopez Mateos will have "friendlies" well into March. And you can make that a perfect day trip from Loreto.
Are you staying at the Damiana Inn? Debra will let you know where to park your stuff safely. If not, the other suggestions posted are reasonable.
Brandon Yarborough comes to mind.
Que les vaya bien! Here's some shots from March 2013, Lopez Mateos

The operators at the San Ignacio Lagoon also fill up quickly with advance reservations.ncampion - 1-3-2014 at 05:50 PM
We had some excellent whale expeirences last year at Lopez as late as the third week in March. Depends on the year, weather, mood of the mother etc.
A great experience, well woth the trip even if on the tail end of the season.DianaT - 1-3-2014 at 06:48 PM

Every year we just drive out to San Ignacio Lagoon without any reservations and never have a problem with Kuyima. I don't know about the other
operators.
San Ignacio is our favorite place. But since San Carlos and Lopez Mateos are closer, you might want to wait until you are there and check what is
happening right at that time as it is different from year to year.
