BajaBlanca - 1-5-2014 at 11:05 AM

alacran - 1-5-2014 at 04:25 PM

Ateo - 1-5-2014 at 05:05 PM

I think this is the city I used to pronounce as "Muuuuu Leg".

Bajahowodd - 1-5-2014 at 05:57 PM

Maybe, just maybe, Raghorn is looking to go to Milage, wherever that may be.:lol::lol:

Floatflyer - 1-5-2014 at 06:55 PM

Isn't Loreto in Texas?:wow: And they walk among us.

liknbaja127 - 1-5-2014 at 07:01 PM

Wow, Always so hard on the new guys:bounce:

Ateo - 1-5-2014 at 07:07 PM

Gotta have a thick skin to post on Nomad. =)

Ok, that's enough.

Anyone wanna carpool to Mulege or Loreto with Raghorn?

Floatflyer - 1-5-2014 at 07:15 PM

I know.;D BUT, especially if you are traveling to a foreign country wouldn't you know where you are going?

At least they have enough guts to venture to the land of beheadings and theft, hmmm. Maybe that explains things?

Now if I can just remember where I left my teeth? Got to quit drinking before noon. All intended to amuse.

LOL

Hazing is illegal. What's the point? The guy can't spell but we all know his intent. Ease up & share the love. Enjoy your adventure, Raghorn.

Maybe a history lesson is in order... How the town got it's name:

#4 Santa Rosalía de Mulegé (1705-1828)

Traveling north from Loreto in November of 1705, the Jesuit Padre Manuel de Basaldúa founded the mission of Santa Rosalía at the Cochimí settlement of Mulegé. Santa Rosalía de Mulegé mission is located on a rare desert river, about 2 miles from the gulf coast. The mission and its farmlands were nearly destroyed by flash floods in 1717, and again in 1770.

The stone church overlooks the river from a high ledge and was constructed in 1766. This was less than two years before the Jesuits were expelled from the New World. Spain’s King Carlos III had been convinced that the Jesuits were amassing treasures and not paying the Crown its due. When inventoried, the true nature of the mission’s poverty was confirmed, there were no treasures.

The Franciscans replaced the Jesuits in California in 1768. Fr. Francisco Palóu wrote that he considered having the mission moved following the 1770 flood. A proposed new location was a place called ‘Magdalena’. Magdalena is just 15 miles north of Mulegé and today building ruins, an aqueduct, and a pila (reservoir) are seen, but no record of who built it is known. An old church about 5 miles further to the west, and close to the village of San José de Magdalena, is sometimes referred to as a Dominican mission visita ruin.

Even though mission activities ceased in 1828, the church at Mulegé continued to serve the new Mexican population that replaced the vanishing Indian population. Activities at the mission church continued to be documented through much of the mid to late 1800’s. Priests assigned to Mulegé often were placed in charge of the other mission churches of the region (Loreto, Comondú, San Ignacio) as was noted in the government book of 1873.

Each of the Old (Baja) California missions has an interesting story and these short history notes may inspire further research and discovery. In the book, ‘The Old Missions of Baja & Alta California, 1697-1834’, we hope to inspire both visits to the missions and further research. A reference list of mission history books is included in the back.

I don¨t know what Milage means, however in the old language of the indians of the area, Mulege means : water from thr rock.

willyAirstream - 1-6-2014 at 11:29 AM

Locals say Mulegè means large mouth, small ano.
ie...floods

X2, Most Nomads are more than helpful but there are always the usual suspects who think hazing a newcomer is cute and cool. Also most Nomads have passed English comprehension and can work through a spelling mistake respectfully. I doubt that the individual knew he had to be initiated to ask a simple question.

alacran - 1-6-2014 at 10:44 PM

It is sad to see that a few nomads have lost their sense of humor.

Floatflyer - 1-7-2014 at 07:25 AM

This from the Baja Pony Express=

a. Driving down to LB leaving N Cal the 15th of Jan......Anyone interested in a caravan down contact davemoller0@gmail.com

Maybe an olive branch?:saint:

Bajahowodd - 1-10-2014 at 05:54 PM

I dunno about bullying. Probably the only thing, looking back on this thread, was the apparent lack of anyone asking the poster about the spelling. Since virtually all of us understood that Milage meant Mulege. perhaps there would have been some milage (sic) to be had for the simple question.

Mulege is now Topeje

Mulegena - 1-10-2014 at 07:29 PM

The current powers-that-be have put up so many needless speedbumps (topes)
across the highway and on the narrow, already-slow, in-town streets that we locals laughingly say, "Bienvenidos a Topeje!"

DavidK, have you a map with the town's name change? ;)

I hope that the new poster will enjoy his trip down Baja... and not tear up his undercarriage on the speedbumps.

Edited to correct my spelling: Topeje is more correctly spelled "Topege". Can you find your way now, Nomads?

Wow! I guess I don't check back often enough! Where is spell check anyway! Mulege, alright! Our first time in years to Mexico, usually winter far south of there, but wanted to spend the winter with our dogs, so we are driving this trip. 2004 f350 ex cab 4X4 , 2 kayaks, 2 ATVs, driving 1 thru Norte.
So this many people with nothing to do must be able to overload me in info about the area. Good places to ride (atv), cool things to see and do, all and any fishing info, from shore and kayak, water temps, snorkeling, and the list goes on. Do hope I didn't misspell anythink!

I live in north central Idaho where rocks and tank traps mean highway, and flat is anything less than 45 degree's!

Mulegena - 1-18-2014 at 09:49 PM

Hello, Raghorn, and welcome.
Many, many activities in Mulege.
Bring your camping gear and your options are endless.
You can camp, and possibly rent a house, in Huerta Don Chano right in town. It's on the north river road on the way to the lighthouse. Look for the signed road on the left, ask for the owner Manuel Romero who speaks English. You can ride your quads up the arroyo there, out to the north-accessed beaches and all around town. Launch your kayaks in the river in front of the park and enjoy the birdlife.
House rentals are also available from Cliff in The Oasis on the other side of the river.
So much to see and do in an extended vacation in Mulege, and at the time of finest weather.
So much activities to choose from. Lots of good food, too, from delicious street tacos to oysters rockafeller. My new fav is the new pizza joint Gato Gordo which is in the same building as the dive shop.
Bring light wetsuits as the water will still be coldish or rent/buy in town.
