La Paz Accommodations

Sweetwater - 1-7-2014 at 12:32 PM

A couple of guys are headed to La Paz on dual sport motorcycles in late February. They plan to arrive and spend two nights in La Paz, Saturday and Sunday nights, March 1 and 2. They are not resort, golfing kinda guys. More like just a clean room, bathroom and beds kinda guys. They will need a bed apiece and reasonably secure parking for their motos. Primary interest is to enjoy the Carnaval and Malecon over those days. Previous stays have been in very cheap places like Hotel Baja California and Hotel San Bernadino, both on Abasolo, so you get the idea that we're not looking for expensive spots.

As I run Google Street View here in the balmy Rockymountains with 25F outside, I find myself daydreaming of the blue skies and sandy playas north of town and the wonderful entertainment and food of Carnaval as well as my last visit two years ago when I had a light sword battle with a 7 yo boy on the Malecon....

So can anyone suggest alternative spots to stay for those two nights? I'd like to make reservations this week, only six weeks till the celebrations. Gracias.

Casa Buena on B. Dominguez between Sinaloa and Sonora just off Abosolo.

Casa Buena

No question about it.

There's a secured courtyard. Park their bikes, unload, walk and enjoy Carnaval.

Another place to consider - as an alternative to H. San Bernardino and H. Baja California - is the Hotel Oasis. This is not very close to the Malecon, but is a larger facility with off-street parking.

The exterior facade has changed since the following street view map was taken by Google, but it still looks somewhat similar to this:

Another place worth mentioning - but not as inexpensive as the Oasis, is La Paz's Hotel Calafia on Abasolo, just east of Colosio, and next to the Ford dealer.

I suspect the Casa Buena might be a better value than the Calafia these days - but the Calafia's still worth mentioning. Here's the Calafia on Google Maps:

Just some additional alternatives that one could take into consideration.

Another coincidence?

Three years ago on another moto expedition, we did stay at the Calafia. I remember the clerk spoke some English and had a story about a relative or coworker who had a bad experience in the US. I don't remember the details but he was very passionate about it.

I have been attempting to stay within walking distance of the Malecon where we'll spend the evenings. I went to Copper Canyon last year but the schedule previously has been Street Fair on Saturday and Parade on Sunday? Both are events I really enjoy.

The other resource I've found is TripAdvisor if anyone else cares to comment:

It's an ugly link but I just tested it and it seems to work.

Ditto on Casa Buena

Sounds like exactly what they need.

But it's very popular. I would contact them right away.

Lorimar has a great location for Carnaval and I bet they'd let those guys wheel their bikes right inside the common area.

I was thinking about that too when he indicated close to the malecon. I don't know if they' let them wheel those into the common area though.

:?:

The Lorimar is on Bravo, on the first block up from the malecon. It's a good value in a popular location, but no off-street parking available - at least for cars/trucks/etc.
