Where/how to find Daniel for fishing in Santispac & vicinity?

Hey all - we're only in Bahia Concepcion & Mulege through the end of the week and I wanted to set up a fishing excursion if possible (I know the wind isn't ideal but what ya gonna do). Last week we'd met Daniel driving on Santispac who offered, seemed like a nice guy & talking to other folks he came recommended.

He vaguely described where he could be found (to the right of Santispac entrance?) but I haven't been able to track the exact spot - anyone know where this would be? Or have his contact info?

To the right of Santispac entrance would be the little lagoon camping area with all the mangales. It's tiny, so he should be easy to find. Or....Just ask at the local beach cafes...somebody will know him.

When you drive off the highway for Santispac, the beach is straight ahead and all to the left... But, to the right, around the rocky cliff is a small beach between the bay and the mangrove swamp (a hot spring is in the mud on the far side of the mangrove).

Go today to the entrance shack at Santispac and ask, "Donde vive Daniel el panguero, por favor?"
(Where does Daniel the boatman live, please?)

They should point you in the right direction, and it shouldn't be hard to find.

The heavy winds of today will lessen with Friday being the best day, Thursday's ok but go early.

btw, don't let the guy at the entry charge you a fee to get in-- you're there to find Daniel, not camp.

Thanks guys, and yeah Mulegena, mi Espanol is a bit rough but I've got enough to get around a bit.

We did head down to Santispac and asked the woman at the gate where he was... apparently he'd left earlier due to the viento and she'd no idea where. I spoke with one of the tienda owners in Mulege who said he lives near Daniel and would pass along my phone #, though I didn't realize he lived in town. Hopefully we'll get in touch with enough time to fit in some Thursday fishing...

Looks like Saturday is the next day without winds. You will not find Daniel there until the winds mellow out. If you try to go down there Friday morning about 8 am he migt be there. If not, you can always try chicho which is another good one to use. The are both extremely knowledgable of the bay.

Going down there in a few weeks and would like to know what the going rate is for a day of fishing with them. Anyone able to pass that along? Thanks

aster, I hope you have great luck fishing with Daniel, but also hope he takes you 'outside' the bay...as the fishing is not as good within Conception Bay. The fishing has not been good for twenty years or more, although it is still a beautiful boat ride.

But...he knows that, of course. Have a good one!

Hit up Mateo at the launch ramp on the river by hotel Serenidad. His house is right there and you cannot miss it. He charges $180 a day and the yellowtail are doing pretty good right now.

A couple hours before reading this I finally tracked Daniel down (i.e. was fed a multitude of clams and some Tecate from the back of his truck) and we'll see what's to be found in the water tomorrow...

One thing I forgot to ask- Does Mateo and Daniel supply all the fishing equipment or do I need to pack my own stuff along?

Mateo does indeed supply fishing poles and gear.
However if you have a favorite "lucky" pole that you'd prefer, well of course, bring it.
Don't know Daniel's policy, but imagine he provides gear, too.

Question: Does a person who hires a guide like Mateo or Daniel need to have a Mexican fishing license or is that covered for the day by the guide? Anybody know?

I should clarify here, the trip we did with Daniel was just spearfishing and going for clams, scallops, etc, plus heading around to some of the islands in the Bahia and doing some exploring, then cooking the catch up on a campfire. He provided snorkeling gear & speargun but didn't have an extra wetsuit, which I regretted not having. The water was mas mas frio than I expected from swimming around in the shallows earlier this week - and when not in Baja I'm swimming in glacier-fed lakes in the Pacific NW, this was still pretty darn cold.

I don't know if he does other types of fishing trips - honestly back home I'm not a big angler besides catching few dinner trout or kokanee whilst camping - but he was an extremely nice guy and very knowledgeable. We had a blast.

You are supposed to get your own licence as the guides don't sell them

daniel is a great guy but basically will drive you around so you can catch a couple triggerfish and he will dive for clams for you and then he will cook up all the catch for you on the beach....it's a really fun day....but it's not a sportfishing adventure...for that, you need mateo....you'll need to get your license in town from hugo, who is right off the square in a little office..look for the "gheko" sign, i think...mateo WILL catch you fish!!

I would like to go fishing for a day while down there and I will also do some surf fishing if I can find a few good places to go around BC bay.

Mateo does not do spearfishing from what I have been told. He also does not have the permits to do it. We specialize in spearfishing and have all the permits for it. We also do the fishing licenses in our office when you are there. We carry a full line of rental guns, wetsuits, fins, masks, etc. I have spearfished over 280 days in Mulege and know where the fish are and how to get them. I also dive with everyone and know the reef systems here which anyone that fishes from above will not know. If you want to get good fish spearfishing then you need a spearfishing guide.
