thinking about spending a week in Mulege in Feb or March
wonder how the fishing is that time of year? I know about the wind what about the fishing???

I used to run out of CHIVATO and worked the area Hard for many years in that time frame..(high speed cat) and I can say with conviction...Lousy
fishing..some years up off san Marcos you might find some YT if your LUCKY... and if your boat is ready for the trip Isle Tortoga can be
so-so.....RUSS ??

If you get the chance to go.... GO. the fishing is pretty much hit & miss for the YT, if I were to make a serious run for the YT, I would fish out
of san lucas cove, not Mulege, only because the best shot at some toad YT are at the north end of san marcos island. Fishing that time of year can be
epic, or misuable, depending on the winds, just the way it is. anytime in Baja is good times, catching or just fishing

marcos) but sometimes the run to Toruoga was a winner..hit or miss san brouno cove would be a good choice with a shollow draft boat !! btw..RUSS,,,you

I fish just about every day I can get on the water, yellowtail have been spotty this year and generally not large. We havnt been out for a few days
because of wind and football....The 2 spots locally known as "Wilburs" and "Mateos" have been the most productive. For a week or so firecrackers were
being taken in shallower water between point concepcion and the mine.

I recommend buying a copy of "The Baja Catch", by Neil Kelly and Gene Kira. I have not fished that area, but the book is pretty good. Tells you what
is biting for different seasons and regions, and provides details on how to catch them. There is a whole section on the Conception Bay area. Good
luck!
It must be out of print, because it's a bit pricy now, but worth the money in my opinion.

Its also way out of date, things have changed dramaticly since it was written, due to commercial over fishing of both bait and sport

Man, Derek, you do this just to stir things up. Fishing has been nothing but epic this year.
So far this has been the best yellowtail fishing I have seen in the last 15 years of fishing this area. We have had fish that average 30 pounds
which are big fish for this area. We have had fish show in areas which are normally not producers such as the DeepV which is where we make a lot of
bait. The area north up by CAOPAS has been putting out very large numbers of fish and one of my panguero friends managed 400 kilos before noon.
Yesterday, there was no action on the 110 or close in areas but the fish started showing on the surface and it was unbelivable. We managed 12 in less
than 1 hour. A week ago we found fish on the DeepV and put 3 in the boat that weighed in over 40 which is unheard of.
Chivato has been doing farily well on the Ranch and 220 but most of the fish are smaller. Bait continues to be a problem and they have had some real
challenges finding any bait so have been using iron and butterfly jigs.
Mulege guys tell me that the fish are scattered but they have had some good catches just not real consistent.
By February, the fish will be showing consistently on the surface so run and gun with iron produces well. If we don't start finding some green
mackerel then that will probably become the way to fish.
There are some fish at Tortuga but unless it shuts off close, there is really no reason to make the trip all the way out there.

Well, yellowklr...you already know that you've picked the worst weather time to fish the Mulege area. There's a good reason that February is called
the 'Loco' month. Can be very cold and windy...and usually holds true to it's name. March is better, but not much.
But you know that..so if you have to fish out of Mulege for some reason, rather than relocate to Sta. Rosalia or San Lucas Cove, then talk with some
local guides (Mateo for one, Alex for another) for some tips or a charter. You probably already know a couple of cantina hangouts for fishermen's
talk...like the Jungle on the river. Check with anglers coming and going from the riverside boat ramp next to the Serinadad Hotel for daily reports.
Nothing beats first hand knowledge.
The best part is, you'll have fun no matter what. I've caught enough large fish to fill my memory banks forever and now I much prefer the trip for
itself.
Like Pescador and chuckie said, try those holes off San Marcos, Tortuga, Pta. Chivato if headed north from Mulege. I've always preferred north for
bigger yellowtail and south for more rockfish/eaters. Close in, try Wilburs Hole and then work Mateos further south towards Pta. Teresa. There are
3-4 good holes in that area. Around Pta. Teresa try trolling or casting off rocky points for cabrilla, etc. A good sonar will help you immensely.
Keep an eye on the horizon...and follow the birds.
And if all else fails, just follow the fleet like everyone else.

FYI I like YT fishing but while fishing SOC I really like to target the Cabrillas and Grouper
If I remember correct I fished Chivato in April and had excellent Cabrilla fishing is
FEB/March usually good time for them?

If you know the holes, Cabrilla fishing is good most of the time. So is broomtail grouper.
