Sunman - 1-21-2014 at 09:07 AM

I'll spare you my preference but you can certainly get a lot of ideas here:

It's OK to have your dreams but the kids may NEVER leave...

Jajaja Steve, you Do know what they say about the apple never falls too far from the tree.

Here's a question for you. What happens when two hard headed, opinionated, adventurous people have twins?

We're in on the same timeline, maybe Patagonia from here. Stick with the 4x4 crewcab, if your kids are anything like ours they'll want to make at least parts of the trip.

40 years ago two folks had the same idea

I remember reading in Four Wheeler Magazine with some degree of envy how this could ever happen, and it has continued for these many years....

Making a life full of adventures - not quite the same style you are looking for but what a life! Probably helps to have a fat wallet.

Overland Expo : educational, pros and cons (in Flagstaff, May)

Whale-ista - 1-22-2014 at 07:59 AM

What kind of camper are you currently using?

I noticed several expedition vehicles along hwy 1 and in San Ignacio and Scammons Lagoon this past week that are similar to what you are considering. I'd suggest getting out and talking to people driving something that interests you if you aren't already doing that. I met one couple that had just bought a pop-up camper similar to one I've been looking for. Discussing the pros and cons with them was very helpful.

Also you could attend the Overland Expo in Flagstaff in May. More information is at Expedition Portal website. I considered attending last year but couldn't make it, may go this time. It looks like a good place to learn more about the vehicles and the lifestyle you are considering.

(Edit changes)

Didn't realize you were deep in MX. If you plan to travel to US at some point, this event might be worth considering. Here's a discussion regarding Expo: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/121551-Overland-Expo-(Worth-It-)

Last weekend there was a couple in oceanside harbor,in a new sprinter sports mobile, very nice diesel 4x4 pop top van . just google sportsmobile ,they make some very nice equipment ,

jimgrms - 1-22-2014 at 09:34 AM

Soulpatch sports mobile converts the sprinter and other makes to 4x4 , if the manufacturer don't offer one

tripledigitken - 1-22-2014 at 10:08 AM

Make sure to factor in the availability of ULSD and the requirements of your targeted vehicle. More manufacturers are adding diesel options, yet availability of ULSD in Latin America is not yet universal.

Please share your candidates as you find them.

And do not forget this story . Buy something you can get parts for where you plan on going..... My guess.. Ford, Chevy, Dodge.

You might want to get in touch with Nomad desertbull. He can convert a used truck into a go-anywhere machine. Just add a used Alaskan camper and you're ready to tackle it all (and stay a while once you get there).

Yeah, seriously. Pop a Cummins into a Toyota and you've got all you need, right?:light:

Rooftop tents, or UrsaMinor modifications in San Diego

Whale-ista - 6-9-2014 at 04:51 PM

Lots of options for Jeeps, Toyotas etc. Rooftop tents are popular, and a company called Ursa Minor in San Diego has some interesting popup ideas for Jeeps.

Check out ExpeditionPortal.com for lots of ideas about "overlanding" with comfort, style, and creativity, which is what you are describing.

Have fun!

How about a step up from a Land Cruiser?

Here's a go anywhere 4x4 2006 Land Rover supercharged v8 that burns gasoline for $19.5k:
