How to know if you have Too Much Fishing Tackle?

---If you cannot get a bicycle into your garage because it's too full of fishing gear.

I was compelled to go look after reading a fisherman's ad...."Help! Need Garage Space, Must Sell Some Tackle."

Psychoanalyst's may mention a compulsion to hoard.
I say....it's a candy store.





I made a very small dent...not even enough for a broom.



Even had stuff for crabbing.



That garage scene reminded me of another 'collector'...Zane Grey



All in all, I came away with my head full of ideas..

OTOH, I've seen many stores that weren't that well stocked....

And yes, I watch the Andy Griffith Show every night these days. Don't care what the new generation thinks of that. It's such a simple show. No great comedians, twisted plots, or great writing. Just life meandering onward like a slow river.

You gotta love garage tackle sales. One of my hobbies is collecting fishing gear....rods, reels, and LURES. I've got a few over the years, but am always on the prowl for something like this one:


'The Heddon Frog'


One of the world's rarest lures, this lure was hand-carved in 1897 by James Heddon of Dowagiac, Mich.

Heddon was one of the world's largest producers of honey: He gave this lure to honey distributors as an incentive for them to buy his honey.

The Heddon Frog is a hand-carved wooden frog with a single hook on each leg and a treble hook dangling from its belly. It has protruding black eyes and a line tie at its mouth.

Valued today at $30,000. Makes rummaging through those garage tackle sales exciting. You just never know...

I used to toss Zara Spooks & Lucky 13's back in the day - really makes me wish I would have held on to that old stuff!

Yes, I know what you mean about the Spooks. Learned that trick with my Dad a long time ago and am still tossing a couple of my own today...as in 'walking the dog'. Works equally well for big pike up north in Canada, too. Get in close to the weed line, walk the dog, and Hang ON!

Got some of the oldtimers on this board, with my all-time favorite since childhood...The Lazy Ike.

Good call, Bubba, along with a Mad Mouse, River Runt, 5 of Diamonds, etc...great old-timers, all ....and will still produce plenty of strikes if I were to use them.

Thanks P. for the heads up on lures. Makes me think about my dads old huge fishing box sitting around somewhere in my older bro's shop/garage. His fishing goes back to the mid teens when he fished the North Umpqua River up near Steamboat, running into Zane Grey on occasion who liked the same steelhead hole dad fished. Wonder if he has one of those green frogs like you showed here in that box. I still have his bamboo fly rod, that hasn't been used in maybe 30 years by me. Is that a sign of old age? Kind of been feeling like that until this morning on the news, a video of this 105 year old swimmer.????? Yikes. I'd better get out & start walking a couple miles a day. My 79 is NOTHING yet!!!!!!

It's a reminder to all of us who had fishing families. Besides being a family keepsake, it might indeed be worth a small fortune! Who knows what treasures are in that old tackle box?

I have my Dad's old double sided wood tackle box....and it still brings up some priceless memories from those early days. Which brings to mind this great quote about fishing and lures:

“My biggest worry is that my wife (when I’m dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it.”


And you're right, Phil...at 79 you are still way too young to compete with those 100 year olds!
