Box milk?

chuckie - 1-23-2014 at 05:43 AM

I have started using Box milk like it better than the refrigerated kind...Anyone know if it available in the US?

woody with a view - 1-23-2014 at 06:16 AM

they have soy, almond etc in boxes. maybe Lala brand in a box but not like the stuff in Mex.

Hook - 1-23-2014 at 06:35 AM

The box milk is what is referred to as an "ultra-pasteurized" product. I have not seen it in boxes that can be stored at room temp until you open it, in the US, but I imagine it's out there.

Where I usually see the ultra milk in the US is in the cold section and it's the "organic" milks. They have expiration dates that are generally about 45 days out. But it's expensive milk. I prefer the taste of these to the box ultra milks in Mexico that has a slightly peculiar flavor, IMO.

Have you had trouble with the cold milk going bad down here, before it's expiration date? Is that why you've switched? We have. We just dont go through milk very fast. It took some looking but we finally found a brand that stays good past the expiration date.

Curious as to what brands of cold milk you are getting over there. Probably not the same as ours, I guess. We get Santa Monica, Yaqui. Lala and Leche Fatima. Yaqui turned out to be the best one.

Cold Mexican milks sure seem "heavy". The 2% milks are like whole milk; the whole milk is just shy of half and half.

Probably not what you were looking for, but I have been curious about milk in other regions of Mexico.

windgrrl - 1-23-2014 at 06:44 AM

Tetra-pack milk is everywhere. Cow, soy, almond, rice, coconut, oatmeal, organic, chocolate, strawberry, fortified, etc. cartons are recyclable.

oladulce - 1-23-2014 at 09:30 AM

1 liter boxes and small boxes of regular and low fat cow milk used to be available at Albertsons/Ralphs etc along side the condensed and powdered milk. Usually Parmalat brand. But I couldn't find it anywhere when I was up in So. Cal last week. Only thing they had were tiny juice-box size milks which was in the juice section of the store. No demand for it anymore?

We buy box milk by the case here in BCS for it's shelf-life because of our location - LaLa "light" or Ley brand low fat.

Boxed wine in US but not Baja?

durrelllrobert - 1-23-2014 at 11:14 AM

Baja may have boxed milk but the US has boxed wine and I think Calimax is now carrying it

dasubergeek - 1-23-2014 at 11:23 AM

They had it at the Smart & Final near my ex's house... I haven't bought it in a while. I agree that Mexican milk seems heavier, richer, fuller... the Jersey brand seems to be the best, and it makes unbelievably amazing lattes.

EnsenadaDr - 1-23-2014 at 11:26 AM

I purposely looked for boxed milk when I was up the US the other day. There are one or two brands but much more expensive than the LALA. I do remember that my refrigerated milk in Mexico would go bad on me quickly even though it was well before the date of expiration. This was discussed on this board before as to what caused it, i.e. substandard refrigerated trucks and storage. So I decided let me buy a quart of refrigerated milk at Vons. Much to my surprise when I got to Baja and opened up the milk, it tasted "funny" not exactly sour, but maybe heading towards that direction. Went to Calimax and got my liter of LALA, and "ooohLALA" it was delicious!!

Got MILK ?

MrBillM - 1-23-2014 at 01:36 PM

The Boxed stuff is great for those who like it.

I guess.

My wife's second son, who spent 9 years living in the Philippines, said that it (fresh milk) was the thing that he missed most of ALL.

And, I KNOW the feeling.

Spending a sailing vacation in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands years back, the one thing that simply wasn't available in the BVIs was Fresh Milk. The boxed stuff was everywhere and we used it, but it made an even better reason to drink more Heineken. Which we did.

Back in the USVI, one of the first things we did was stop at a 7-11 for MILK.

In Baja over the years, it is staggering how much Fresh Milk we threw away spoiled (sometimes on the day we bought it). Never did find a consistently reliable source in SF. Makes me wonder if handling prior to its arriving at the market put it on the edge.

weebray - 1-23-2014 at 02:14 PM

The bottom line on milk is that the best fresh milk is straight from the teat. Everything else is just not "fresh" milk. That being said it has been proven that you get used to, and in a relatively short time prefer, what you use for awhile. I was told this years ago when, for health reasons, I switched to lo-fat. At first it tasted like water, I hated it. A few weeks later whole milk tasted really bad, oily and heavy, I hated it. Fast forward to today. We have spent a number of years traveling around the globe and refuse to give up milk in our morning coffee. The hands down freshest and most convenient solution is powdered whole milk. It is freeze spray dried literally minutes from the teat and shelf life is measured in years. In Mexico that would be Nido or our preference Liconsa. Laugh or scoff as you like but just give it a week or so, you may change your mind.

DavidE - 1-23-2014 at 02:16 PM

TWICE the cost or even more when you can find it.

THE dairy is located 12 km east of Vizcaino. Caracol. Drive to the guard shack tell them you want to go to EL ALMACEN (the store) and you will find the freshest milk on the peninsula. The store has cheese, gallon jug drinks, chorizo, etc. Prices are OK it's the freshness I'm after. It goes on the shelf the day after it comes out of the cow. No weird science fiction chemicals used in the cows either. No butter no cottage cheese dammit.

While we're on the subject of dairy products.....

Hook - 1-23-2014 at 02:29 PM

.....do you guys get jocoque over there? It is pretty popular over here and is made by several firms. In addition to natural flavor, there are chipotle, cebolla, chiltepin, zanahoria and combinations of all these.

It is super-strained yogurt, even thicker than Greek-style yogurt.

dasubergeek - 1-23-2014 at 04:11 PM

Jocoque is available everywhere... you can get it locally made in the Valle de Guadalupe at Cremería Los Globos at the stop light in San Antonio de las Minas.

chuckie - 1-23-2014 at 04:25 PM

But do they have menthol lattes?

I assume you're saying leche en polvo is twice the price of whole liquid "brick" milk. WRONG. I have in my hands 1 pkg of Liconsa which I just bought for 18pesos. It makes 2 litros. Less than 10p/L. You also said "when you can find it" - wrong again. It is available in every nook and cranny of Mexico. It is a staple and available where liquid milk is not.

chuckie - 1-23-2014 at 05:22 PM

HEY! You have to understand that EVERYTHING Davide Posts is wrong....Thats a given..He is the only person on the planet that speaks in Dementia/'Sanskrit............

perhaps a Mini-Road Trip in your future, Chuckie?

Mulegena - 1-23-2014 at 05:45 PM

Chuckles, how about the dairy out in the valley east of Mulege?
Go before 8 am and bring your own clean containers.
I've been meaning to try it.

So Many Confusing Responses

Gypsy Jan - 1-23-2014 at 06:14 PM

Here it goes - hubby prefers Jersey whole milk fresh in the plastic refrigerated container.

Without advance notice, I bought the tetrapak shelf stable box, and he didn't like it - he it tasted "off" to him.

willardguy - 1-23-2014 at 06:17 PM

the only question was "is box milk available in the u.s.?

Well, the answer is yes but some of us prefer to take the scenic route to the answer instead of the freeway. Does it bother you that the first post in reply to the question wasn't - "yes"?

David K - 1-23-2014 at 06:29 PM

The box milk is great if you are camping and got to have milk for cereal or cooking... Store it until you need it, then drop it on ice to chill it. I think it stays safe unrefrigerated because it is dosed with enough radiation to kill bacteria?

you are correct sir, its all about the journey isnt it? hey do they sell this stuff at those evil oxxo stores?:?:

chuckie - 1-24-2014 at 05:53 AM

I dunno if i got an answer or not,,seems to be designer milk in cutesy packages but regular box milk? I have my duaghter going to check in several stores in Colorado, to answer my question....David? I dont think its radioactive , my coffee didnt emit the slightest glow this morning..

vandenberg - 1-24-2014 at 09:10 AM

I believe the box milk is double or triple pasteurized and is alright in coffee, but to me ,used by itself or with cereals, it tastes funny and nothing like regular whole milk.
Here in Loreto, spoiling of milk has become a rarity, likely do to better refrigeration at the different markets and a local distribution center.

[Edited on 1-25-2014 by vandenberg]

DavidE - 1-24-2014 at 12:04 PM

The ISSUE is if box milk is available in the USA. It is and it costs TWICE AS MUCH AS it does in Mexico. I searched for years in different stores and box milk in the USA usually is sold in 8 oz containers.

Did I use too many syllables for you Chuckie? My God, "Sanskrit" You get a gold star.

Weebray, did your reading comprehension get dessicated as well? BOX MILK is whole milk that has been utterly sterilized and needs no refrigeration. WTF does that have to do with LICONSA?

Even the coffee better be French Roast or stronger or that weird taste comes shining through.

DavidE - 1-24-2014 at 12:24 PM

Cafe negro is one answer. But to me the box milk taste issues pales in comparison to the difference between CHIPILO mantequilla de vaca and USA butter.

chuckie - 1-24-2014 at 12:28 PM

Where is Cafe Negro located? In Ascuncion? Do they serve lunch?

dasubergeek - 1-24-2014 at 12:31 PM

Dude, have you ever bought butter from the cuenca lechera in Rosarito? That stuff is AH. MAY. ZING.

Also, to the point of the original post: Yes. Boxed (UHT) milk is available in the U.S. It is sold in quarts (not 8 oz. containers) and it is available, of all places, at Staples. It is stupidly expensive; $36 for a twelve-pack, which makes that $12 a gallon. Given that I can buy five-adjective (organic local blah blah) milk at Whole Paycheck for $7 a gallon this makes Parmalat a stupid investment unless you truly need the shelf life... in which case DavidE's point about dry milk is well taken.

Yes, the Fresh Jersey Dairy Milk and Butter are Much Better Tasting

Gypsy Jan - 1-24-2014 at 12:45 PM

In answer to Weebray's question, I did a switch-to-the-box test with my hubs because I was curious as to if there was a detectable difference and since I don't drink milk or eat cold cereal, he was the best test subject in the house, since the dogs eat anything and everything and don't give much feedback, except for waving tails.

Jersey fresh milk and butter is available at the Mega Comercial (Pelican) store in north Rosarito and also at the El Jefe mini-market in Primo Tapia, which is open 24-7. El Jefe is located on the Carreterra Libre (Free Road) which goes through town, just south of the closed Pemex station.

You espeak espanish? Cafe Negro. Black coffee. Woowee, right, yeah, lunch, like "out to ......"

Gringolandia has a lot of stuff that Mexico does not. Sort of like looking for tomatillos in Toledo, or bolillos in Bangor. One item that is difficult to find is butter that tastes like it has been anywhere near a bovine. Once in awhile mercado sotres carries challenge, costing four dollars and change a pound. Just a little 150 mile jaunt down to the market.

That's why I make my own. A quart of cream and half a cup of either plain unflavored yogurt or buttermilk. Mix 'em together and let them sit out on the counter, loosely covered, for 24 hours. Then whip it (your choice, stand mixed, whisk, shaking in a giant jar) until it becomes whipped cream, keep whipping, and it'll separate into curds and whey. Drain and keep the whey (it's real buttermilk) and then rinse the curds but don't keep the rinsing water... if you don't rinse, it'll spoil in two days flat, even in the fridge. Add a pinch of salt when you whip if you want salted butter.

My my, I just can't keep up with this guy. With the permission of the forum I would like to change David E.'s name to "to do!" since he apparently hasn't anything else TO DO than hang out on his computer snipping. Anyway it appears that I misunderstood his prev. comment, I can't be responsible for his lack of understanding of syntax. Soooooo, "Todo", tf is that Liconsa also has been uDDerly sterilized and needs no refrigeration.

chuckie - 1-25-2014 at 02:43 PM

I'm kinda sorry I started this thread.....

Phil S - 1-25-2014 at 03:50 PM

Chuckie. Don't be. Thanks. When I'm down there, I like the box milk for making white russians!!!!! Yum yum. slurp.

Udo - 1-25-2014 at 04:13 PM

I generally like to use the boxed 1/2-1/2 from Jersey brand milk. It IS tough to find, but Walmart carries it (in the refrigerated section). Smart & Final always does, and Ley, Soriana, and Calimax have it (at times) in the coffee isle.

chuckie - 1-25-2014 at 04:29 PM

White russians..now theres a plan...

willardguy - 1-25-2014 at 08:11 PM

another vote for white russians!

chuckie - 1-26-2014 at 09:54 AM

DavidE - 1-27-2014 at 12:26 PM

Weebray it's one thing to misunderstand syntax. It's another to criticize an OP or a response to an OP's statement. I do not utilize sarcasm unless a respondent rudely cuts a person's response. If a person is civil I stay civil.

If someone injects a rude and unjustified comment that would indicate they get all their information by reading "Cro Magnon Quarterly", I cannot help myself. They post a "Kick Me" fluorescent tag to their backside.

bajaguy - 1-27-2014 at 12:33 PM

Commercial Mexicana has it ( the 1/2 & 1/2) in the boxed milk department, bottom shelf under the other jersey products. About 22 pesos a box

Pompano - 1-27-2014 at 07:46 PM

The first year I was buying the stuff in Mulege, the milk, while it didn't smell 'completely' bad in the store's cooler, would spoil before dawn the next day....

....SO... we had lots of midnight white Russians, Grasshoppers, Golden Caddies, Up Against the Walls, Brown Cows, Bulls Milk, Sliders, Mango Chimps, Irish Creams, and for breakfast..ugh...hot cocoa with rum.

Always loved a challenge.....

dasubergeek - 1-27-2014 at 09:25 PM
