Yes, it is a hoax but we heard it live on a TV news station last night during the Grammies. I guess these days they just throw this chit up without checking any sources.

????

He employs a lot of people.

Just because an owner of Cemex dies doesn't mean the business closes down.

Cancamo - 1-27-2014 at 08:44 AM

Karl Slym, a British industrialist, owner of Tata automobiles, fell from a balcony in Bangkok.

Not Tio Carlos........

Carlos Slim doesn't own Cemex. Maybe you were thinking Telmex?

EnsenadaDr - 1-27-2014 at 10:18 AM

You are right, it's Lorenzo Zambrano, but I had read a misleading reference in Google which associated Slim with CEMEX, thanks for clarifying.

Bajajorge - 1-27-2014 at 10:20 AM

Does his death(if true) cause the 1% to be less than 1%?

EnsenadaDr - 1-27-2014 at 12:07 PM

well they will forget about him and target their hatred to someone else alive again

Managing Director, not owner.

And an apparent suicide:

Although I'm not a capitalist groupie, I have to say that if Carlos Slim Helu lived in America, he would personify the American dream. Son of Lebanese immigrants, he drove a cab in Mexico City as a young man.

Today, through Grupo Carso, he owns a whole bunch of mierda (Google it to see just how far reaching it is), not to mention his standing as the number one or number two richest man in the world.

His philanthropic endeavors match that of Bill Gates.

chuckie - 1-28-2014 at 08:35 PM

An Amazing man...

Hook - 1-29-2014 at 08:02 AM

If Carlos Slim lived in America, he wouldnt be nearly as rich, because he would have REAL competition.

Anyone living in Mexico can appreciate how poor Telmex service can be, especially internet. We RARELY get the advertised data rate over here and outages are numerous. You actually have to pay moonlighting Telmex employees to hook you up to their telco lines or you wait for months..........repairs can take days. Very understaffed for our area.

MitchMan - 1-29-2014 at 09:54 AM

Adam Smith, father of economics and proponent of market based capitalism, indicated that competition was what it is all about. Without healthy competition, the best things that market based capitalism has to offer are not realized.

There are many examples of the lack of the existence of healthy competition, it is what plagues all market based capitalist economies.

Adam Smith said that healthy competition results in efficiency and low prices that sustain fair profits and optimally benefits society and the economy itself. He said that proper competition results in low prices that sustain just enough profit to make it worthwhile for the entrepreneur to stay in business. Unhealthy competition is where there isn't enough competition to suppress prices and encourage efficiency...what you have is one or a few entrepreneurs making windfall profits thru uncontested higher prices without having to be efficient.

Carlos would likely be even richer if he was in the US. Then he could charge the obscene rates the US companies do and get bailouts and stuff. I find the TELMEX service here in Mulege very satisfactory at a bargain rate. Internet and Phone, including 100 free minutes to the US cost me about 30 bucks/mo..same service of poorer quality in the US cost me about 80 bucks.
