Whales in October?

flyguy - 1-26-2014 at 07:55 PM

Hey first post here! Heading down around mid October for our honeymoon road trip and wondering where, if any, would be our best chance to see Whales or Whale Sharks this early :)

Also where is the best place to introduce myself to the forum :?:

Thanks!

Not the season for whales. But you will see whale sharks in the gulf.

Best place to introduce yourself is right where you went! There will be others weighing in here.

I'm no expert but that's not whale season.

I saw whale sharks in August (I think) at Bahia de los Angeles.

As far as Gray Whales are concerned along the Pacific coast, there are generally opportunities from late December to early April, but prime "season" to see the Grays is considered to be mid-January through mid-March.

The Grays are consistent in being there, and it's considered a very rare and unique experience to go whale watching on the Pacific lagoons with the Grays.

For Gray whales I've found first week in March to be the best time - babies are old enough that the moms let them approach the Pangas, and all the bird life has not migrated out of the lagoons yet - Best of both worlds. I've seen fin and blue whales in the summer months off Loreto and L.A. Bay (and thousands of dolphins), but I guess you have a chance to run across them year round. I haven't been lucky enough to come across a whale shark yet...

Hi,we have snorkeled with whalesharks 3x in October/nov in La Paz. At the time we went out with the cantamar, they had an ultralight so the the plane would find them then radio the boat the location. I heard the plane wasn't running last year. We did a dive safari trip with Fun Baja out of costa Baja resort in La Paz.. It might be worth checking with them also. It was the best operation yet for us to date. We have been out with them all. Being in the water with a 30 ft fish is amazing. Have Fun !!!

The best I can think of is right here in LA Bay, usually lots of whale sharks in the bay in October and we have a resident population of fin back whales that are here in the area all years round. The water is still warm in October so snorkeling with the whale sharks is pleasant. You will probably see other species of whales in the area but no guarantees.

Thanks for all the great info!! I've been dreaming of swimming with whales sharks for a long time now... We are bringing down a kayak wonder if its realistic to reach them ourselves? Either way i'm bringing the GoPro and will post pictures ;)

On our honeymoon (15 years this October!) we snorkeled with whale sharks in La Paz bay. Boat we were on hired a spotter plane to locate "prey". It was an unforgettable experience, for sure.
