a beginner rider alone in a dangerous area, lets hope for the best!

805gregg - 2-10-2014 at 07:09 PM

This is covered more extensively in the ride reports on ADVrider, hopefully he will be found OK

Marc - 2-10-2014 at 07:27 PM

If he's in Michoacan and off the main roads, then.....????

Ateo - 2-10-2014 at 07:34 PM

My buddy just got back from Michoacan. We joked about how Mexico "is soooo dangerous". He had no issues.

willardguy - 2-10-2014 at 07:45 PM

you do know michoacan is roughly the size of west Virginia ? im sure he scoured it!:smug:

Ateo - 2-10-2014 at 10:48 PM

Not sure if this is him or not, but someone must be looking for this person.

I think it is:

La descripción del desconocido coincide, al menos en los tatuajes, con la de Harry Devert: “Complexión delgada, moreno claro, ceja poblada, nariz recta, mide 1.70 metros de estatura, tiene dos tatuajes, uno en el brazo izquierdo parecido a un corazón y otro en la mano izquierda al parecer las letras mayúsculas MA”.

Harry Devert

The description matches the unknown, at least in tattoos, with Harry Devert: "Build thin, light brown, bushy eyebrow, straight nose, is 1.70 meters tall, has two tattoos, one on his left arm like a heart and another in the left hand apparently uppercase MA

Rough translation....looks like the guy:

URUAPAN , Mich. , February 7, 2014 - . . A young man came out of the American Union aboard his motorcycle, in order to cross Mexico in its unity , was found unconscious and seriously injured in the city of Uruapan , in streets the downtown area , reports the portal process . The information describes the early hours of last Tuesday an ambulance of the Red Cross picked up an unconscious man at the center of Uruapan and moved to Uruapan General Hospital " Dr. Daniel Pedro Martinez . " The description matches the unknown , at least in tattoos , with Harry Devert : " Build thin , light brown , bushy eyebrow , straight nose , is 1.70 meters tall, has two tattoos , one on his left arm like a heart and one on the left seems capitalization MA " hand. Harry Devert , a wanderer who decided to cross Mexico Motorcycle Kawasaki- green color , NY67SD6 plates , was missing since January 25 in Michoacán. Devert , who fed a travel blog entitled " A New Yorker Travels " , get on your bike intended to Brazil to witness the World Cup and then to Ushuaia, Argentina , the last point walkable America. Harry The last message was received by his girlfriend Sarah at 15:18 pm that day by WhatsApp : " They just escort one and a half outside of an area that looks like it was very dangerous for me to be . I stopped eating and I finally have Internet . Soon I'll be back on the road. Apparently there is another military convoy waiting in another town ... I'm a little late for this folly of soldiers ... I hope to write tonight when (hopefully ) finally arrives. "

DavidE - 2-11-2014 at 04:48 PM

Uruapan is no more freakin' dangerous than Pomona. The issues in Michoacan are between LCT, SSP, and self-defense groups. A common criminal can "want" your brand new 4X4 with 24" gold plated wheels, cany orange paint, 24 lights across the rollbar and mural of a snorting bull mounting a cow. He'll pull out his brother in law's .45 you lose your truck and Los Caballeros Templarios get the rap.

I can give you a recipe for going inside Uruapan, Juchitan, or Oakland, California and find yourself dead inside 15-minutes. Until and unless the minutiae of the victim becomes known, speculation is about as worthless as a 1985 100 peso coin. "Motos" are coveted in Mexico. I have never owned one yet I know this because I don't close my eyes andscratchmyass before doing something new or going somewhere new. I have met plenty of double-digit IQ travelers in Mexico that needed a keeper. Stuff like this is going to happen and it's going to CONTINUE to happen TO SOME PEOPLE.

motoged - 2-11-2014 at 04:54 PM

David,
I scratched my ass with my eyes open....and my coveted moto was still stolen  . It happens ALL OVER the planet for all sorts of reasons by all sorts of people.

This unfortunate rider will have a story to tell....if he survives his beating....

DENNIS - 2-11-2014 at 04:55 PM

The article didn't say anything about his bike......or much else for that matter. :?:

motoged - 2-11-2014 at 05:00 PM

Dennis,
The article is about a tourist found beaten....the moto issue is a side story...another Canadian couple murdered in a home robbery in a tourist "enclave" south of Guadalajara a few days ago ....crime reports are endless ....but certainly not just in Mexico.

paranewbi - 2-11-2014 at 05:33 PM

Just 2 cents worth here...

No one on this board or any other knows more about Michoacán than David E does. I've surfed there many times since the early 70"s and have spent hours talking to David about his home town. I'll let him reveal the acquisition of his knowledge but I will offer it is trustworthy. I keep my mouth shut and listen. Even if his passion about the place implies a sense of superior opinion. It actually is superior.

Where does it say he was beaten?

I assumed that he had been in a motorcycle accident when I read what GED posted.

Well...I didn't know if he'd been in a wreck or what? In fact, I thought he was history.
Anyway....hope he makes it.

motoged - 2-11-2014 at 11:22 PM

It appears that the rider encountered difficulty with locals and was escorted out of an area somewhere in Michoacan....he posted a note to someone after that and then was out of communication with home...was reported missing...and then was found unconscious in the street in Uruapan...apparently due to an assault.....

This is not a motorcycle issue. Perhaps more about misadventure or just bad luck.

tripledigitken - 2-12-2014 at 06:34 AM

I just saw a TV interview with David's mother with no mention of this report.

:(

DavidE - 2-12-2014 at 05:54 PM

I've had visitors brand-new to Mexico come to me and ask me, "Say can I park my Harley in your driveway while we go down to the beach?" But on the other hand I do not see how it is possible to "prevent" people from doing unwise acts. Like parking their ride outside a genuine cantina and then rubbing elbows with people that can be macho, grouchy and vastly disingenuous. No stinking fooling a friend invited me to a neighborhood cantina in Uruapan, and the first thing I saw when I passed the wooden wall blocking vision (no door), was "No Machetes! Park Your Peenche Machete With The Cantinero Or No Service!". Tacho who is as big as a Freightliner, had to "defend me" from a torrent of insults from drunken patrons. One kicked a plastic chair at me and my friend made him come and pick it up. Of course when i conversed with Tacho in Spanish, the bar keep came over and became friendly and the same drunks who minutes before demanded my -----, invited me to their tables for ten thousand drinks. Me? Gone to that cantina without Tacho? Shirley you jest!

I do know PARTS of Michoacan. But even on a local issue, I ask. Jesús my son-in-law. Dahveed you cannot go to Apatzingan (looking for strangler figs). It is Dangerous there now for Güeros (light skinned). Turned out the LCT took over the area and the campesinos would have no part of it. The LCT are mostly light skin Mexicanos and the indigenous can not tell the difference.

It is no joke my ride is soooooo ugly no sicario (gunman) in their right mind would set foot in it. When I joke en español (two highwaymen blocking a rural road) "O Dios Mio Do Not Stop This Car! He Will Probably Ask Us For Gas Money" it leaves the Mexicans howling with laughter. It is true.

If I were to go to a strange country the VERY first thing I would do is read up on it, and damned well using the internet and reputable travel guides. Then I would try and befriend a bi-lingual native or ex-pat and soak up every thing I can.

I am a compulsive "learner". Even after spending 50 years on and off in Mexico I learn every day. I am also inclined to help people whenever I can. I love to share information. If you think i do not learn when reading these forums, you are el incorrecto señor. When I stop learning - I start dying.

Someone shared with me that the guy found in Uruapan was NOT the missing motorcyclist....friend saw the injured guy and said "not him" is the gist of what I was told....mystery continues...

DavidE - 2-13-2014 at 10:25 AM

Many pardons motoged, the ip server here started acting weird just before the power went out for four hours PM.

Dennis,

Here is the link describing David's friend following up on the Uruapan accident victim. (4th paragraph)

I also saw a live interview with the mother yesterday, with no mention of her son being found.

Dennis, The way al menos is used here, I think it means "but for the tattoos", but I could be wrong.

It actually means, "At least," although I think it may mean the same thing.
Thanks.

Google This...

Zitacuaro Michoacan Violence

Remember Uruapan? The place where LFM rolled 5 decapitated Cartel Beltran Leva sicario heads across the floor of a disco several years ago?

Friend in Zitacuaro? Another area where Jesus forbids his suegro to go?

Many larger cities in Michoacan have T-1 fiber optic service. Can't do stock trades? I get a minimum of 1.2mbs service in Zirahuen, La Mira, and 2.4 in Morelia. How much bandwidth does a person need to do stock trades.

Motorcycle? Tatoos?

Life is just chock full of coincidences...

I hope the guy made it. Whoever and whatever he is he didn't deserve to get disappeared.

Only in Mexico friends!! The saga and the drama continues.;..
