We went whale -watching last Tuesday in Mag Bay leaving from Puerto Lopez Mateos. Wow - wow - wow! It was great!
We left at 8AM and it was foggy and chilly, but calm. It warmed up quickly and the fog burned off quickly, too. Actually, it was amazing to hear the
whales through the fog and we didn't mind it at all.
We were out for 2 hours and spent a good amount of that time with a really friendly mom and calf. There were 2 other boats in the area with us and we
took turns getting up close to the mom and calf which was about 1 month old. Everyone got a chance to pet either the mom or the calf or both - we
were hoping to get close, but had no idea we would be able to get THAT close. The mom even did several roll-overs and went onto her back as if she
were expecting a belly rub.
There were many other moms and calves who did not want to be approached quite that closely, but I don't have an exact number count. The youngest calf
we saw was about 1 week old according to the guide.
As we were leaving at around 10:30, 5 vans loaded with people arrived at the dock area. So, as mentioned in another thread, go early if you want to
avoid the crowds.
We stayed at Mula's casita - a wonderful place to stay. Contact her for more info.
