Life Expectancy of Expats in Mexico

pauldavidmena - 2-16-2014 at 04:45 PM

A quick Google search revealed that there isn't much scientific research about this topic, but I'm curious about how a move to Mexico might impact an American's life expectancy. I would have to think that there are risks regarding access to quality health care as compared to the States, but imagine that the reduction of stress relative to - say, the rat race in the northeast - could compensate for this risk. Thoughts?

Stress is reduced in many ways, but can be increased in other ways. Out of the rat race, into learning a new culture. It depends on the individual.

The biggest risk, IMHO, is if you have a major health incident, an emergency. In the bigger cities on the mainland, there are some really excellent hospitals, excellent doctors, and just really good care.

In Baja, between Ensenada and La Paz one just hopes they don't have an emergency. The more rural you are, the more you are on your own unless you can survive some very long drives. ot if you where you can have the medivac insurance.

This topic involves a preoccupation with one's own demise.........one's death.
Not exactly Baja, is it. Very morbid, in fact.
Baja is a celebration of life.

I'd like to think I'm preoccupied with improving my quality of life, which is why I'm considering Baja in the first place.

Death twitches my ear. "Live," he says, "I am coming."

Philosopher Virgil from B.C...true then, true today. No time like the present to live. If you truly like life in Baja, then quality of life will follow. There can be no guarantees.

IMO life expectancy is closely tied to diet and most expats don't eat healthy. Part of that had to do with what was available but the choices are much greater now and it's possible to eat healthy.

Hot or Cold

Maybe it depends on the weather

I'm with Dennis.
If this question even enters your mind, living in an outpost like Baja, shouldn't be on your agenda

Of your posts I've followed, you're the type that research a move to eternity and never comes to a decision.

I should know, had several friends with never ending questions and indecisions. They're six feet under now and never got any of their questions answered.

The USA ranks at 50 according to the CIA Factbook and not so far ahead of Mexico as one might think.

THIS is good.

I am a firm beliver that you were issued only a certain number of heartbeats when you were born. When you use up those heartbeats, doesn't make any difference where you are or what you are doing .....in Baja, the US or in a certified trauma hospital....tic-toc, tic-toc

That is total nonsense.

The life expectancy is now 80. It used to be 35. How did the clock change in 2000 years?

bajaguy - 2-16-2014 at 08:20 PM

Everyone to his/her beliefs, Joe.....YMMV

Udo - 2-16-2014 at 08:28 PM

Life expectancy in Fiji is less than 70!

Depends on what part of the world you are in.
(And I'm not even counting anyone in middle Africa...they bring down the world average).

I don't know if I will live a day longer here in Baja but...

I don't spend all winter planning my summer, only to spend all summer getting ready for winter!:tumble:

Please excuse me for stating my opinion so strongly. :(

I do understand the decision that the trouble of extending your life is not worth the benefit. That is cut down on the alcohol or eating high fat foods or smoking. But to say that it makes no difference is just not true. Medical science just doesn't support that.

Like someone said "I'll do it my way". And that's OK.

BornFisher - 2-16-2014 at 10:07 PM

Yeah--- you could move to paradise but if you smoke 2 packs a day and drink a fifth of booze a day, you ain`t really going to discover the "Fountain of Youth" in Baja!!

motoged - 2-16-2014 at 10:42 PM

There are so many variables determining life expectancy it is a bit of an exercise in mental masturbation

I think "quality" of life is the issue.

Cypress - 2-17-2014 at 04:13 AM

Genetics, diet, lifestyle, environment all interact, but one sure way to extend your lifespan is to fish as often as possible. When you're fishing you're "off the clock".:)

Good point. At the end of the day, extending one's life of misery is at best a cruel farce. Waking up with a smile on one's face is a true gift.

My ex-wife always felt that I took too long to make a decision, whereas I considered her much too impulsive. The truth is somewhere in between. I did, after all, decide to divorce her.

I'm always going to ask a lot of questions before I make a decision - that's just the way I am. Once I make that decision, however, I'm all in.
