bicycle race cancelled

I saw in the news that the Rosarito-Ensenada bicycle race has been cancelled due to the problems with the scenic highway collapse. There is now a lot of traffic on the "free road".
Sad, it was a poplar event and brought in the tourist dollars.

You would think they would let them race on the toll road.

There just isn't safe room for everybody on the road now. Lots of big trucks and, of course, all car traffic that would otherwise use the toll road.
Good call for the city to make.

Problem is, they couldn't get off of it at the Ensenada end. The road is gone.

Bummer. Love that ride.

Everything will return to "normal" next year, and will stay that way till the road slides into the sea again. It's only a matter of time.

I'll bet you that Mextrans will build a bridge this time, Dennis.
But the problem is that the bridge will have to be a suspension bridge, because the footing will never hold.

I think that would only compound their bad decisions, Udo. The problem is, according to my info, the problem area is the end of the San Andreas Fault. That's the fault that threatens to destroy much of California some day.
The road will eventually have to swing back behind the hill.....hopefully before it costs lives.

Foundation Castro-Limon will proceed with their annual ride on March 15th, from Rosarito to Bajamar (previously went to Bibayoff via the free road).

Ros-Ens becomes Rosarito-El Mirador-Rosarito with a U turn on the Toll Road at El Mirador. 62 miles total is what Google Earth gives me. Looks like they will also have an optional U turn at Baja Mar for a slightly shorter version that also avoid the last climb to El Mirador.

Official map details forthcoming.
