apple - 2-19-2014 at 02:12 PM

I don't know but I'm sure it is much worse than you'll get at an ATM

Bob and Susan - 2-19-2014 at 03:32 PM

nope...about the same

aguachico - 2-19-2014 at 03:35 PM

ATM is always better. I got a fake 500 from cambio in Ensenada.

CortezBlue - 2-19-2014 at 03:59 PM

San Felipe was in the 12.75/13.00 range over last weekend

sd - 2-19-2014 at 04:36 PM

Downtown Los Angeles yesterday was $12.40

DavidE - 2-19-2014 at 05:21 PM

With a five dollar Wells Fargo fee plus a (now) 53 pesos per use fee, it takes a relatively robust extraction from an ATM to best the honest Casa de Cambios at San Ysidro.

Bob and Susan - 2-19-2014 at 05:27 PM

Baja-Mex Insurance Services, provides a exchange U.S. dollars to Mexican pesos.

the say: To find the most current exchange rates, please call us at
1-800-300-MEXICO (6394)
or at
1-619-428-1616.

can anyone up there with a phone call and post the rate?

thanks

Banamex and HSBC both charge about 30 pesos.

12.80 / 12.98

Sweetwater - 2-19-2014 at 10:37 PM

OK, but 800 miles to the norte, I got 12.5 at a local bank and that gives me a basis to cross the border without stopping. Worth it for me.

Bob and Susan - 2-20-2014 at 06:11 AM

thank you dasubergeek ...and here is why a ask...

someone is doing some building...no bank account yet

the difference between 12 to 1 and
13 to 1 is 20,000 pesos for 20k dollars

that's a lot of cement

i'm with most of you...i'm happy at 12.5
I cant believe the bank up north gave pesos out
over the counter at 12.5 after fees
amazing...

msteve1014 - 2-20-2014 at 08:58 AM

For $4 Wells Fargo will send money to a Telecomm/Telegrafos office. The rate is 13.01 right now.

aguachico - 2-20-2014 at 12:36 PM

UBOC has a good withdrawal policy. They refund the bank charge of 30 pesos. They reduced the amount of refunds to 2 a month, from unlimited. They still do not charge a fee.
Last Friday I got 6000 pesos for 456.xx including the 30 pesos charge. Had it been my 2nd for the month it would have cost me $454.xx.

DavidE - 2-20-2014 at 01:44 PM

"Banamex and HSBC both charge about 30 pesos"

I'll mail you my 53 peso Banamex extraction charge slip from Banamex Guerrero Negro if you promise to reimburse me for postage and envelope ;)

There's a limited amount you can change at a cambio, though—I guarantee they don't have 260 kilopesos hanging out waiting for someone to come build a house.

no need to mail anything anymore
no more postage
those days are gone

but..i believe you $$$

salchipulpo - 2-22-2014 at 12:18 AM

It's almost always a half peso less than the daily exchange. Remember this and you will never have to ask again.

So today the exchange is 13.26... in the morning when you go to a banco or a casa de cambio... it will be 12.74. That's their profit margin.

Mas o menos. It's almost always half a peso.

Simple.

I have to ask... How does someone who has a website dedicated to Mulege not understand this already?

Furthermore, how does a two-paged thread of this site dedicated to Baja not know??? Do any of you have experience in Baja or Mexico?:?::?:

I guess you just dropped in to make friends...eh?
Let me be the first to tell you.....you're doing a pee-poor job of that so far.

it was a legit question...
when someone asks a question I like to give a "correct" answer

cambios post their rates outside like gas stations...
I just thought some could notice the signs...

I guess "salchipulpo" did something wrong...banned after 2 posts...wow

BajaRun - 2-22-2014 at 09:15 AM

Is it better to use the atm and pay a 3% exchange rate fee + a 5.00 transaction fee than it is to exchange dollars at a casa de cambio?

I bank with BofA and after reviewing my recent statement they credited me over 52.00 in fees, however they were unable to credit me the 3% and the 5.00 fees....

Bob and Susan - 2-22-2014 at 02:01 PM

its about the same...

except there are very few places that take credit cards in the small towns and cash is king

weebray - 2-22-2014 at 04:39 PM

Geez, I can't believe people are still with B of A, Wells, etc. We have not exchanged greenbacks for pesos for less than 13.28 in over a year. Charles Schwab picks up ANY fees incurred. Seems to us to be an no-brainer. They also have all the services of any normal brick and mortar institution. This IS the 21st. century. What are we missing here??

DavidE - 2-22-2014 at 04:45 PM

Can a person DO a Charles Schwab account online? Seems a little rude to spend 500 dollars or so, to go north and hunt one down. Are their online services the equal of Wells?
