Mexicali boarder crossing

randrew - 2-19-2014 at 09:18 AM

we haven't been across at Mexicali ,going to San Filipe 1st time ,is the place to cross ?

David K - 2-19-2014 at 09:26 AM

Where are you coming from? In most cases the answer is yes. San Felipe is on Hwy. 5, 125 miles from Mexicali border.

randrew - 2-19-2014 at 09:30 AM

we're coming from Vancouver island

If you are going to San Felipe you have several choices. To me the easiest way is to go to El Centro and go through one of the border crossings there. We go through the East crossing as we feel it is pretty easy, having said that I also hear the other is just as good. Have fun...........enjoy Mexico. We are there next week Nancy

thanks , we hope to be in San Felipe on March 18,

That is personal preference for crossers at Mexicali
to San Felipe, I go east on Interstate 8 from San Diego,
about 11 mi. west of Calexico is a right turn off 8, Hwy 98
goes into downtown Calexico, the west Old Downtown
Mexicali crossing 1 mi. or so after you enter Calexico, I've driven that for yrs., you have perhaps 10 signals or so
thru Mexicali until you get out to the open Hwy, I probably
go that way out of habit, some go to the mentioned east crossing

thanks , does it matter what time of day you cross ,as far as busy times ?

Mexicali east is not open 24 hours, and you dont want to drive thru Mexicali during rush hour traffic.

The east Mexicali crossing can get backed up starting about 4:30 some days. All the workers coming back home. Plus getting through town can be a littte busier.

randrew - 2-19-2014 at 03:04 PM

thanks, hope to go through early morning,

nbacc - 2-19-2014 at 03:38 PM

anyone know what time the bank opens at the East crossing?

Bajahowodd - 2-19-2014 at 04:58 PM

I'm amazed at how many times I see this on the Nomad forum. A boarder is someone who pays you to stay in your house.

Bwana_John - 2-19-2014 at 05:39 PM

"A boarder is someone who pays you to stay in your house."

I thought a boarder is someone that slides on the snow while being mounted transversely on a single plank??? (see: knuckle-dragger)

East crossing by all means. There wont be any boarders this way :-) Lot easier to use the East especially for first timers. Opens at 6 closes at 10

We used the Calexico east last month for the first time. It's a million times better than Tijuana.

dizzyspots - 2-19-2014 at 08:32 PM

so...survey says? Calexico East or San Luis...coming from Tucson thru Yuma>>>

I prefer Algodones...only because it is small and no traffic. Mexicali east is faster I think.

randrew - 2-19-2014 at 08:51 PM

thanks ,sounds like Calexico east border crossing

dasubergeek - 2-19-2014 at 09:17 PM

Not San Luis... why pay the bridge toll??

randrew - 2-20-2014 at 08:30 PM

I guess my next question is if the bank or bank machine is open on sunday to get a tourist card coming through Mexicali east ,

David K - 2-20-2014 at 08:52 PM

You should be able to pay right there at the INM office (newer deal) if the bank window next to it is closed. That's the case at Tijuana and Tecate... But, it is Mexico... and some rules are flexible there!

Have a great time... go with the flow... absorb the sunshine, smile, be patient!

Take the old crossing in Mexicali, never had a problem. The only time it took any time to speak of, was when I was hauling building materials and had to pay import fees.We have never got a tourist card if we are just going to San Felipe
