San Felipe to junction of Mex 1 on motorbikes

thinking of riding my 650 VStrom adventure type motorbike from SanFelipe down to Mex 1 ,wondering how the road is and is there gas - food along the way , will be based in San Felipe with our RV but plan to bomb around on the bikes , maybe camp out ,

Hi randrew, welcome to Baja Nomad.

If you didn't find an answer (as there is so much to read here), please know that many of us don't mind reposting answers. Some of know there are new Nomads joining up and don't realize how much Baja data can be found here.

In brief, the road is paved to Gonzaga Bay and graded dirt road the last 38 miles to Hwy. 1.

Top off your fuel at San Felipe. There are Pemex stations in Puertecitos (51 miles south) and Gonzaga Bay (94 miles south) but either of them may be closed or out of gas. The next fuel heading south is at the L.A. Bay junction, about 30 miles down Hwy. 1 from Laguna Chapala (where Hwy. 5 meets Hwy. 1... or 160 miles from San Felipe.

Food at Colonia Delicias (25 miles south), Puertecitos (take paved entrance road off Hwy. 5), Punta Bufeo, Lot's of Gonzaga choices: Papa Fernandez', Rancho Grande (across from gas station), Alfonsina's, El Sacrificio. At Hwy. 1, turn left for a short distance to find a truck diner 'Rancho Nueva Chapala'.

There is usually gas at Puertecitos and Gonzaga Bay, and at Chapala (where you intersect HW 1). The road is paved from SF to Gonzaga Bay. From GB to highway 1, conditions are variable. Some sections are sandy, others are gravel with rocks sprinkled about. I have ridden this on a KTM 450 many times, and have never had an issue. Bigger bikes wallow a bit in the sand, but make it. If I had a bigger bike, I would not hesitate to go, but recommend caution. Best of luck!

That low pipe and a 5.9" ground clearance and suspension travel is a concern on your bike...once you pass Coco's.......

Otherwise it's a great ride down to Gonzaga Bay where there are several great spots to camp Gonzaga bay such as Papa's www.papafernandez.com/

thanks for the info , my wife and I both have 650 Vstroms they have belly pans and crash bars , they are ok on gravel or hardish sand but good fun in the twistys on the road

Keep an eye out for the "Vado" signs. They're basically a dip in the road to drain water from one side to the other. A few of them will either launch you or maybe cause some serious compression damage to your spine!!! :lol: They are between San Felipe and Puetocitos, the worst are closer to Puetocitos.

Yes... See the Baja Road Conditions forum... but in a nutshell just read this thread... It is a 2WD graded dirt road... 35 miles from the Pemex station at Gonzaga to Laguna Chapala.
