El Chapo Arrested in Mazatlan

monoloco - 2-22-2014 at 10:02 AM

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Associated Press has learned that the head of Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel was captured overnight by U.S. and Mexican authorities at a hotel in Mazatlan, Mexico.

A senior U.S. law enforcement official said Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman was taken alive overnight in the beach resort town. The official was not authorized to discuss the arrest and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Guzman faces multiple federal drug trafficking indictments in the U.S. and is on the Drug Enforcement Administration's most-wanted list. His drug empire stretches throughout North America and reaches as far away as Europe and Australia. His cartel has been heavily involved in the bloody drug war that has torn through parts of Mexico for the last several years.

Excellent! But market forces GUARANTEE a fast replacement. Until the CAUSE is eliminated tens of billions of dollars of subsidies will guarantee such services will remain lucrative.

Moral of the story, don't take your girlfriend to the beach, you can get burned.

This could have a significant impact on this billion dollar international corporation.

Do you hear a sucking sound? That is a vacuum. Things could really heat up now.

Wow! This is big! He seemed invincible. Something tells me that this is not the last of "El Chapo".

I was traveling on the mainland when he broke out of prison in 2001. Talk about long lines of vehicles at military checkpoints. They took an especially long time searching every truck. It would take easily an hour before we could pass through the checkpoints. We always got waved through though, once we reached the army inspection personnel.

We had just left Mazatlan and was headed south. There was no feeling of danger though. I was all over Michoacan; Morelia, Patzcuaro, Uruapan. We even hired an indian guide to take us on horseback to the volcano in Uruapan. Then we climbed on foot to the top. There was lots of steam coming up under your feet on the trail. The only remains of the original village that could be seen was the top 6' of the church steeple. All of Michoacan is a very dangerous hotbed of Cartel activity now.

"It is a significant arrest provided he gets extradited immediately to the United States," Jordan told CNN. "If he does not get extradited, then he will be allowed to escape within a period of time."

"There is no way that I would have bet that they would have ever arrested him under this administration unless he double-crossed somebody or didn't make the full payments on bribes"... "Something went wrong."

We will probably never know what deals were made, if any. Perhaps something was discussed at this weeks summit in DF. :?:

It may well be that Chapo Guzman morphed into an ineffective entity much like what happened to Osama Bin Laden. When a "leader" has to isolate themselves within an overly thick onionskin of protection, communications become difficult, enforcement is open to interpretation, minions come to the conclusion the "leader" has little value and the reward becomes irresistible.

The DEGREE and the INTENSITY of Sinaloense violence following this arrest will be a bullet-proof polygraph test of just how valid the above viewpoint is (or isn't). Undoubtedly there will be some. But had Guzman really ruled with an iron fist the bloodshed is going to be intense. Not so much within the grupo sinaloense but with rival cartels striking when they think the moment is ripe. If there is an effective 2nd administering at this time, such incursions will be brutally dealt with. Violent but brief clashes.

If they want to send a message and scare the bejeezus out of the rest of the narcos, they'd just extradite him to the US, where he will not have any luxuries or ever hold a woman for the rest of his life. I expect to see the opposite where he'll be convicted in a big show trial then be sent off to a luxurious cell where he'll have his own cook, flat screen TV, cell phone, and all the women, booze, and drugs he wants, until he escapes or is set free by a corrupt judge.

as others have noted: nature (and narcotraficantes) abhor a vacuum...

Whale-ista - 2-22-2014 at 02:36 PM

When a drug cartel (or any organization that uses violence to maintain order, see "warlords") is left leaderless, "middle management" types make their moves. Woe to those who get in their way, by design or accidentally.

Unless this was scripted in advance, and he was "retired" by his own, the promotion process can become brutal for bystanders and those working in the pecking order.

Hoping for a quick/relatively painless resolution...

Right. As long as there's a demand, expect the next El Chapo to fill the void faster than you can say "War With Drugs".

Or They Found One Hell Of A Good Double

Wotta hoot! The USA is POWERLESS to stop arms, and railroad flatcars of currency from being smuggled. Oops I mean exported expeditiously.

LEGAL MARIJUANA 600 dollars an OZ.

MEXICAN POT (How much is it now?)

Ethical marijuanos will be sensitive and patriotic and reject illegal marijuana.

This is sooooooooo funny. LEGALIZE and all your problems will go up in smoke.

No mention of US involvement:

Enrique Peña Nieto ✔ @EPN

La coordinación de la @SEGOB_mx, @SEDENAmx, @SEMAR_mx, @PGR_mx, @PoliciaFedMx y el CISEN, fue determinante. Felicidades a todos.

Nothing will change. Some Lieutenant will take over the operation and the sales and distribution will continue without skipping a beat.:barf:

Where is all of Chapo's money/wealth? Spoils of war?

I get your point and also favor decriminalization of Cannabis, but as a fact check...at $15.00 a gram for TOP SHELF (TOP SHELF) legal weed, the ounce price still only rises to about $450. an OZ. Not that long ago, where it is grown, the street price was lower than that.

I feel that this is an argument for decriminalization. If people are willing to spend more to be on the "right" side of the law than they would if they remained outside the system and were still the enemy in a "war". It wouldn't be the first time I've been dead wrong, but it seems to have a bit of reason to it.

I hope they roast the scum bag! A couple of years ago I carelessly followed a link from IFLYFISH and experienced a chainsaw execution of a couple of narcotraficantes. I'm still not recovered from those images.

El Chapo forfeited his right to breathe a long time ago. IMJ.

Just a fyi...you have a few mistakes in your tag line....especially in the third one:lol:

Why do Liberals insist and demand that achievers pay the way for nonachievers who are to lazy to succeed, or are just failures by their own choice?

Criminals prefer unarmed victims, dictators prefer unarmed subjects.

Why do ignorant people continue their blabbering when it only proves to others how stupid they are.

Yep, Jorge, your tag lines are self cancelling! Your first contention is so easily dis-proven that your third conclusion then applies to you! Sorry, not Baja related. I wish there was a civil place to dialogue on the subject, but alas the OT is over-run by right wingers like PJC who borrowed 6.5 million dollars and didn't pay it back. There, Jorge, is moral and financial bankruptcy writ large.

bajaguy - 2-23-2014 at 10:42 AM

Actually, the third reenforces the first
